Careful legalization and heavy taxation of marijuana would be a huge boost to the economy... but it would take like a zillion years to implement properly.

Would there be gang violence against the government? Who would run the smoke clubs (would it be a private company that pays a huge tax rate, or would it be a government agency?) Would they just let the weed roam free on the streets?

While it is the right thing to do, I too worry about how it would get implemented. There is a lot of money in it currently, and I'm not sure the gangs and poor dealers are going to be happy when their client base goes to the legal stuff which has better quality control and prices.

And that comic is great. I should get a t-shirt made of it for the next time I try to cross the border.

I doubt you'd see violence against the government. More than likely the dealers would switch to selling the harder drugs. There will always be an open market. On the flipside of the coin, I'm sure quite a few of the current dealers would parlay they're "skills" into a legitimate business, considering they probably have wholesale and agriculture connections.

I think it's a great idea, but I doubt the puritanical teetotalers in our society would allow it. The same goes for the abolition of ABC stores and other government liquor purveyors.
