Hey; Product is the name of my brother's band. Don't hate.
Hmm, I'm with you on Machinima, Pwned (I seriously think I created this phenomenon; but since it's so widespread I also seriously think I didn't), and Ganked. I hate these words, too: Farming Camping N00b |

I think this is the first time in my life I've ever seen the words machinima, zerged, ganked, or a game/console hitting.
I've heard "robust economy" quite a bit. It seems as if that's the only available variant of strong writers have available to them. Meme: I find this useful in certain situations, and haven't seen it overused lately. Pwned: I'm at a loss as to how this is pronounced, and it has frequently been a marker for me of a lack of maturity when used in any manner other than satirical. Product: Can't fathom why this would bother you unless it's being misused to mean "service", which annoys the hell out of me. Gilda

Oh man, N00b needs to go.
Hey man, what kind of band is it? Anything out there I can apply my ear to? Edit: Gilda: I mean 'Product' in the sense of 'output'. They use it on Penny Arcade a fair bit, talking about games as a whole as 'Product'. It just seems a very business-orientated view to take of something that, at its root, ought to be about fun and playfulness. 'Robust' is used in the sense of specific features in games being well-designed. Again, it has a corporate flavour to it that makes me want to go and brush my teeth when I hear it. Like, one might say the costume creation engine in City of Heroes (which is arguably the best thing about the game) is very 'robust'. Grrrr. 'Meme', well it's not a gaming term as such, but it's definitely touted around in gaming circles. One of my most ill-advised pastimes is trawling crappy Livejournals in a masochistic orgy of angst and bitterness. Those surveys that people circulate to be filled in and posted on your 'blog'. It's overused in certain places, for sure. 'Ganked' and 'Zerged' are MMOG terms that just need chopping off at the knees and then machine gunning for good measure. And Machinima, I have no clue what it means, but if you read gaming blogs, you'll see it EVERYWHERE. Last edited by flamingdog; 12-26-2005 at 01:54 PM.. |

If I never hear these words again, it'll be too soon:
-actually (actually, you don't need to say actually every 3 minutes) -proactive -negativity (thanks, MTV for stealing another one of our smart words and ruining it) -"I feel" phrases ("I feel like lately you've been drivijng 50 minutes a day." I feel statements are used to convey feelings (opinion) not facts.) -irregardless (Question: how can you be without being without regard? Answer: it's a double negative!) |

flamingdog - I'll PM you their myspace page when I'm done typing this. As much as I would like to tell everyone about my bro's band, it's not my intention to spam.
Here's the reason why I think I created the term, "pwned.": I was playing Counter-Strike waaaaay back when I was in high school (probably 10th grade; I graduated in '02). I forgot the name of the map I was playing, but I remember it had this hallway the CT's could access by running up stairs towards the beginning of the map, shooting a vent, and hopping in. There were balconies to snipe people from, and I remember towards the middle of the map, you can duck down and walk underneath the building to the other side. Might've been called inferno but I'm not sure. I sucked at Counter-Strike. I STILL suck at Counter-strike but that's besides the point. I got "ganked" (which was a term unknown to me at the time; I don't think they use it in CT anyways) and, trying to stay in a happy spirit, I typed, "Man, I just got owned!" Thing is, when I typed the "o," I accidentally hit "p" instead, so it came out like, "Man, I just got pwned!" The room would not stop laughing at me. They were like, "He said pwned! Haahahahaha! What a dumbass!" and "pwned? WTF is that shit?"...etc. Months later, I find "pwned" has encompassed the internet as a whole, sucking it into its void of mind-numbing laziness. The reason I, at the same time, DON'T believe I created it, is because anyone could've had the same exact experience, and it could've been coined THEN. |

gank means to kill; specifically when a high level character "ganks" a noob just to send him to the spawning point with whatever the penalties the game may give for dying. Doing so usually gives the high player no gain other than an extremely small amount of experience, and an evil sneer.

Also a word that has been irking me since I first saw it was "smexy", "smecksay" or however else these preteen emo children choose to spell it.

And yeah, FTL is for the loss (or for the lose, whichever). More stuff I learned from WoW players: cmn (cry more newb), qft <- not sure, but my guess was "quite ____ true" from the context.

FTL is Faster Than Light, no?
Yeah, I'm sick of seeing games called Killer Appz. It is a game, not an application. A consoles "killer app" is that it plays the games. Alot of gaming blogs and posts on message boards, and even gaming print magazines, have sentences that start with "Personally, in my opinion, I think..." Why not just say I think? If you tell us it's what you think, then we know it is your opinion. You have already referenced that it is personal by stating "I" think. Better yet, instead of saying "Personally, in my opinion, I think that the new XBox blah blah...", just say "The new Xbox blah blah." We know it's your opinion, you are saying it. edit Quote:

Ugh, it's worse when someone makes an argument, and some nitwit can only counter it with 'But that's your opinion.' No shit, it's why they posted it, so come up with an opinion otherwise! I assume all postings are opinion unless expressely stated as fact, because that's what mine are. So there. :P
A nice, albeit long (otherwise I'd post it), article on another word to hate, Convergence, makes a good read.

Any and all intentional misspellings of words on the internet, or words that are vaguely (or entirely) leet-ish:
w00t evar moran (yes, I know where this comes from) pwned teh n00b I also have always hated all acronyms for "laughing out loud", etc. (I refuse to type the acronym, because I have vowed to never, ever use it ever ever ever)
