Addictive old-school games!

If anyone has any addictive old-school games they play, post them here!

A friend of mine and I always play Super Smash T.V. for SNES on an emulator -- it's amazingly fun!

What do you old school gamers play ALL THE TIME?

Siege 12-06-2005 09:49 PM

Freecell baby!

Oooh, ooh, CHESS. Doesn't get much more old school than that! Kawnsoul? Huh? :D

Seriously though, Super Street Fighter 2 is quite fun. I would really love to go to Evolution and watch the pros play it though.

alpha phi 12-06-2005 10:06 PM

Super Dodge Ball on the NES.
I still love it, only now I have to use an emulator.
The old nintendo stopped working many years ago.

MexicanOnABike 12-06-2005 10:13 PM

I found an old 386 at a friend's house about two years ago, formatted the HD and installed DOS just to play SC2.
I even put it in the autoexe file so it went straight to it when you started up :D

Of course now there is the Ur-Quan Masters project, which kicks a lot of ass.

LOVED SmashTV! I used to play Chaos Engine endlessly too :D and a futuristic game I forget the name off- you had to manage or play a team of buts throwing a ball around and beating up the other team.

Still playing Dungeon Keeper though. F'ing brill.

Great site! Telegard brought back many memories.

Does anyone remember the Ultima series by Lord British?

My friend, they can work! You need to hotfoot it over to DOSbox and grab a copy. Then get your hands on another app called DOSBoxer, which is a front end for DOSbox.

With these two apps, you'll get real DOS emulation, with selectable EMS or XMS. With a little tweaking, I played RedneckRampage last night. You can even config an autoexec to run, so playing something like XWing is not out of the question either.

cj2112 12-07-2005 11:43 AM

Skithin' for Genesis....on an emulator :D

RogueHunter65 12-07-2005 02:16 PM

Starcraft and Unreal tournament for PC
Chrono Trigger, Metroid, Mario Kart, and Secret of Mana for SNES
Mario 3 or Contra!!!! for NES

CityOfAngels 12-07-2005 04:20 PM

I'm glad someone mentioned Tetris; surprised it wasn't the first mentioned. That game is so addictive its not even funny. I've played it so long I've dreamt Tetris in my sleep. Another addicting game is Kirby's Pinball Land for Game Boy. Any pinball game is addictive, but this one lets you save your score so you can keep playing on later. Of course I didn't know that until I beat the game several times(Spoiler: The game just keeps looping itself anyways.)...

longbough 12-07-2005 06:57 PM

tetris
solitaire
minesweeper
karateka
prince of persia (original one)
crystal quest

OMG. I haven't played Oregon Trail since grade school. And I gotta agree with Kings Quest.
And what about "Lode Runner" or "Life and Death" ---> I always wanted to screw up an apendectomy.

The best old abandon-ware games site I've ever found is Home of The Underdogs. http://www.the-underdogs.org.

Also, I second the vote for dosbox. Awesome program.

superiorrain 12-09-2005 05:08 AM

Frontier Elite 2 - the best game of all time, ever!!!
There is no eng to this game, i'm sure you could play it forever.

Just on problem after hours of trying i still can't get it to work on XP, so i kept an old PC that will handle its power. If anyone has any ideas on making this game work or have got it to work then please PM me.

rlbond86 12-09-2005 11:26 AM

Actually, I've had better luck running DOS games with VDMSound.

And I totally forgot about Fallout! That game was amazing!

I don't care if the graphics get better and better - the PoP games just get more and more like other mainstream games - less original and less addictive.

The last one is basically a hack&slash fighter - they even changed the good prince into some sadistic, buff, tattooed, long haired metal rockstar figure ... like we don't have enough of those in video games.

I don't mind hack&slash - but this wasn't what PoP was supposed to be about. I wish they could have stayed true to the original premise - so I wouldn't be ashamed to let my neice and nephew play.

betrayal at krondor (rpg)
nethack(rpg)
quake 1
pop1
populous:the beginning
caeser3

Random Hero 12-11-2005 11:12 AM

The Mega Man Anniversary Edition has taken up more of my time than I'd like to admit, and Super Mario RPG is the only emulated game that I play regularly which doesn't make sense since I have the cartridge somewhere.

You are not alone, my friend. This game is one of my top ten of all time! Glad to see a fellow fanatic.

Lucifer 12-12-2005 02:41 PM

street luge

easy, addictive, I can't stop playing it!

MexicanOnABike 12-13-2005 07:49 PM

ok, i dont want to make a new thread just for this so i'll post here:

i'm looking for this pretty old game i used to play like 10years ago.
isometric or 2d view. it was a shooter. you could upgrade/buy new stuff every round. FOR THE PC.
now i forget the name but i think it was something like cyber--- or dog---- and i'm sure you could play that game in coop mode. and that was the funnest part of the game.
enemies would change colour with skills. like red or white. there was machineguns, grenades i think, and other weapons like that. now i'm like going insane cuz i cant find it...

does anyone remembeR this?!

EDIT: i think you could pick characters and one was called ICE baby.
google is being a jackass about this. i cant find anything... :|

peeweesbigbong 12-15-2005 08:11 PM

Super puzzle fighter for playstation.

Unfortunatly someone wanted it more than me so I no longer have a copy, nor can I find one :(
