Some of the most ultraviolent video games ever created.

Resident Evil 4 Called 'Ultraviolent'

Resident Evil 4 and God of War were on the list of the top 10 most violent video games as rated by the Family Media Guide, the GameSpot Web site reported.

The ratings, based on the watchdog group's assessment of game content provided by its sister company, PSVratings, were released on Thanksgiving, at the start of the holiday shopping season, the site reported. This year's list included what the group called "some of the most ultraviolent video games ever created."

The top 10 games, in no particular order include Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, NARC, Killer 7, The Warriors, 50 Cent: Bulletproof, Crime Life: Gang Wars, Condemned: Criminal Origins and True Crime: New York City.
Thoughts? Opinions?

God of War is pretty horrific. There's one point where you have to make a human sacrifice and it's imho the most violent ever. The whole point of the game is to kill stuff, whereas in the GTA games you can technically go though them with a minimum of killing.

Resident Evil - let's just say that the last R:E game I played was Code:Veronica X and and it left me more creeped out than sick with all the gore.

ObieX 11-29-2005 10:13 AM

I loved Postal 2. Because not only can you pour gas on someone, then light them on fire, then shoot them as they ran around screaming. But after they die you can whip out a shovel, slice off their head.. and then whip out your wang and pee on them.

In fact if you light yourself on fire by accident, the only way to put yourself out is to pee on yourself.

Plus the game contains gary coleman, arab terrorists, and a giant penis-shaped character named "crotchy" (i think that was his name anyway) Crotchy also has a toy like tickle me elmo.

You kill cops and swat and even army guys. Can get arrested if you dont run from the cops and have to shoot your way out of jail.

That game kicks ass.

Edit: so many things i forgot.. like you can go to a circus and shoot at elephants so they go on a rampage and kill people. And make people's heads explode with a shotgun blast. And people nearby who see it will start to throw up.

And the character you play works for a video game maker who makes violent video games. The first fight of the game is when protestors charge the game company, and you have to shoot your way out (after getting fired).

Can chuck severed cow heads at people.

You can also pick up stray cats AND STIck YOUR SHOTGUN UP THEIR ASS and shoot them at people!!

Best game ever.

Obiex, have you ever:
a) poured gas on someone, set them on fire, and shot them as they ran around screaming?
b) chopped someone's head off with a shovel and then urinated on their body?
c) lit yourself on fire and then put it out with your own urine?
d) killed a cop, a swat team member, or a member of the U.S. military?
e) gone to jail and shot your way out?
f) shot at elephants to make them rampage and kill people?
g) shot someone in the head with a shotgun?
h) thrown a severed cow head at someone?
i) stuck a shotgun up a cat's ass and then pulled the trigger?
j) murdered someone in any way?
I'll go ahead and ask you one more question: What is your view on actual violence?

I'll bet that Obiex has never done any of those things. I'll even go so far to guess that he thinks it's wrong to do those things. But he enjoys playing Postal 2. If I'm correct, you know what this means: Violent videogames are still videogames, and are a form of art. As long as no one dies in the process of making them, and as long as it isn't actual terrorist propoganda (which unfortunately today could be loosely defined. But hey, Bush is in office; anything can happen), they should be readily available to appropriate audiences. And no, I don't think age is the most efficient measurement of appropriateness, but it is the least intrusive. I'm not saying we shouldn't let anyone under the age of 18 play GTA: San Andreas; I'm just saying videogames and movies should have the same guidelines. Last I checked, it's still legal for my 12 year old brother to go rent "Braveheart."

MooseMan3000 11-29-2005 07:43 PM

Um... am I the only one that noticed that all of the games were released within the past two years? I'm gonna say that they're not the "most violent," but rather the "most detailed" violent games.

And the other thing: this article once again proves...

Its a lot harder, and more painful, to get the end of a shotgun in the anus of a cat than the video game led me to belive :(

The top 3 of those games are the only ones worth buying. They aren't worth buying because they're so ultra violent, they had great gameplay, looked great, and had pretty good replayability. The other games have pretty flawed gameplay, especially when compared to RE4 and God of War.
The human Sacrifice in God of war was a little disturbing, I mean the poor guy was crying out the whole time I was pushing him. Then again I felt pretty sad about killing the Colossus' in Shadow of the Colossus.. poor innocent creatures..

Oh, MooseMan3000 the list in the original post is the top 10 video games this holiday season, so yah they are pretty new games.

Another vote for Carmageddon. Such a great game for the psychopath inside.

CyCo PL 11-29-2005 11:18 PM

Yeah, most of those games they listed are pretty weak compared to the violence in Postal 2.

My favorite part about postal 2 was the cheat menu you get after beating it, and using the machine gun to shoot out bouncy cats that bounced everywhere. It's so great stepping into a building or a house, pointing the gun at an angle toward the ceiling, and letting loose with the bouncy cats. Watching a line of bouncy cats bouncing all over the walls and ceiling, hitting people and exploding, is just pure bliss.

tspikes51 11-30-2005 12:17 AM

How's about Doom 3... last I recall, you could see individual organs (most notably, brains) come out of the human/zombie guys when you shot them in the face with a shotgun.

djflish 11-30-2005 04:21 AM

This thread reads like a shopping list. eBay, here I come!
So, are we talking about the most violent games ever, or the goriest? Or is there even a difference?
Pretty much any game by Rockstar should be included, especially Manhunt.
The original Postal was pretty controversial at the time and the original Soldier of Fortune.
And am I the only person who thinks that Syndicate was the mould for GTA? Free-roaming cities, recklessly killing civilians and police, stealing cars, etc.

Catdaddy33 11-30-2005 04:25 AM

I agree with Carmageddon.. power side into a crowd of people for a bonus..oh yeah...

djflish 11-30-2005 04:42 AM

Wasn't Carmageddon banned because of the pedestrian killing, so they made the blood green and said they were zombies?

Pragma 11-30-2005 05:10 AM

Certain countries (such as Brazil) banned the game, so patches were released to "zombify" it for them.

flamingdog 11-30-2005 05:16 AM

Yes, but then they released an expansion pack for it a few months after release which changed the zombies back to 'people' and the blood to red. There was a blood patch out on the net that was pretty easy to get hold of anyway.

As far as the second game goes, I'm not sure. I know that started with zombies too, but the version I had on my computer had blood... I think Carmageddon 2 was probably more fun, if only because the pedestrians were little 3D people and not jerky pixellated sprites, and the environments were cooler. Race around an airport terminal anyone? An office building? Across the rooftops of a city?

stevie667 11-30-2005 07:08 AM

Soldier of fortune of was such a brutal game, definatly one of my high rankers.

One of my favourite things was blowing peoples arms off, lighting them up with a phosphorus grenade, then making them explode with the microwave gun, damn that was funny.

I loved putting cheats on and just flying around exterminating the bad guys in disturbing, but genuinly amusing ways...

Where did i leave that disc?

Pragma 11-30-2005 08:06 AM

You're so right about that. I had endless fun in Soldier of Fortune 1 and 2, particularly SoF2 multiplayer. Just running around on the rooftops, sneaking up behind people with the shotgun and blowing their arms off, etc.

I spent far too much time playing that game..

Coppertop 11-30-2005 01:23 PM

And who can forget the first time in Carmageddon 2 that you ran over a dog and it made that sad little dog noise? I used to love it when people would get stuck to the hood of my car but wouldn't die, just flail their arms and scream until I scraped them off on a building or another car. So very wrong, but so very right at the same time.

longbough 12-03-2005 09:58 PM

I'll second the vote for "Manhunt" which, not only glorifies gorey death, but glorifies the videotaping of gorey death.

MontanaXVI 12-05-2005 10:15 AM

God of War was AMAZING

silver26 12-05-2005 11:35 AM

I hope it has nothing to do with the gore, but Resident Evil 4 and God of War are a couple of my favourite games Ive ever played.

Another vote for MANHUNT.

Hands down the most twisted, violent, sadistic, anti-social videogame I've ever played. Off the charts.

Delirious 12-06-2005 06:57 AM

I vote for God Of War.. excellent game and extremely violent

shadowfiend 12-06-2005 07:37 AM

IMO Resident Evil 4 sucked. Postal 2 was okay and so was GTA:San Andreas. I should try God of War, sounds interesting.

Pragma 12-06-2005 12:08 PM

So is this thread supposed to be an "oh my god these games are violent" thread or a "recommend fun violent games" thread, because I'm reading this like it's the latter.

RE4 kicked major ass. Just pissed me off that Spoiler: the 'zombies' weren't zombies afterall. GOTTA have zombies in a Resident Evil game. But the re-vamped game engine amazed the heck outta me. I loved it. I also loved San Andreas, but since I was born in '84, and I love Scarface, I have a strong keenness for Vice City over San Andreas.

Plaid13 12-06-2005 10:36 PM

none of those games are even as close to as violent as pacman crazy little ball runs around eating everything wont even let dead people rest and eats the ghosts they leave behind. what kinda sick freak thinks up this stuff.

I don't think that would be easy to accompish either.

Somehow Manhunt was forgotten by the media because of OMG Grand Theft Auto. I think that Manhunt was a whole lot worse than... most if not all games. "Help me make films where you kill people for the sexual enjoyment of others." Grand Theft what?

xepherys 12-07-2005 09:03 PM

Another vote for Carmageddon... SO AWESOME! I wish they'd make a new version of that game. *sigh*

longbough 12-07-2005 09:23 PM

I mentioned "Manhunt" before but didn't adequately describe it - many games have an impressive amount of gore and disgust ... but what makes "Manhunt" rather disturbing is that it's actually about making "snuff" films. It has as much gore as anything out there - but the "snuff" film aspect gives an excuse to show each killing replayed with different camera angles. In addition the theme itself is conceptually unsettling.

Playing it just feels very, very wrong.

Exactly why I thought RE:4 sucked. Besides the game is too easy.

hulk 12-08-2005 04:12 PM

Spoiler: It'd be hard to pull zombies into the game when Umbrella is well and truly gone, and Raccoon city is a pile of smouldering nuclear glass. New enemies kept the game interesting. How much easier would it have been if they were the same dull cretins? Especially considering the control is actually, well, decent.

'Course, once you hit Pro mode all traces of easiness disappear. At the start of the game, you'll die in two or three hits. The boss fights are much, much tougher, too. Even when you're fully loaded with guns and ammo, it keeps you on your toes.

battlemouth 12-09-2005 07:40 AM

RE:4 using the riot shotgun got the gore factor going
God of War using a chain whip with blades on the end of it, it had to be gorey
Quake 4 had its share of gore, you just have to get a bit into the game
what about smash tv?? for its time that was some great gore, eyeballs flying, shooting off faces, exploding heads, etc etc

Zyr 12-11-2005 04:00 AM

The problem in video games is not the violence, but the attitude to that violence. In GTA it's glorified, same for Postal 2. In Manhunt the whole point was to make it as violent as possible for the snuff film. In God of War it was more "I have to kill things? Ok, if you insist", but still very brutal.

Some people think that they shouldn't make violent video games, but that's not the solution. The solution is enforcing the rating system that already exists.

Incidently, though bloody, technically speaking, you're killing (and sacrificing) zombies in God of War.
