It's looks exactly the same as Doom3, I know it's by the same developer and it's obviously using the same engine, but they could have tried to differentiate it a bit more. I mean, the landscapes, rooms and characters/enemies all look the same, the first pic could be a Doom3 screenshot.
Having said that, it doesn't mean I won't play it! :) |
People are saying that it's a fault for it using the Doom 3 engine, but damn, this game looks great. The graphics are still amazing, even if it is based on a somewhat old engine. I've never been a fan of the Quake games so I'll probably skip it. I did enjoy Quake 2 on PS1 though. :)

I don't know man, overall I just get the feeling that this will be "just another FPS." The gameplay hasn't been updated, it's a recycled story, and the graphics are almost identical to Doom3. I mean, yes, it looks good. The graphics are pretty. But that's about all I see that it has going for it. Who knows, maybe it will be awesome.
|
Hmmm...I didn't know it used the Doom3 engine (guess it was obvious by the looks :/). Everything is so dark and muddy in D3, and I prefer the crisper graphics/physics of Q3. I guess the same engine means the same mediocre performance on my computer.
I hope this isn't an afterthought title, or just an expanded Doom3 multiplayer title with a crappy single player campaign thrown in for sales. Not happy about the D3 engine, but who knows. It is Id Software...they've made some pretty good games in the past. |
I loved Quake 2. Wasn't too thrilled with Q3. I'm sure I'll buy Q4 but I'm going to hold off a while and read some reviews. I bought Doom 3 and only played it for about ten minutes. I don't know why.
|
ID Software has let me down alot recently, Return to Castle Wolfenstein was a downer, Doom 3 was extremely bad and Quake 3 Arena was the worst of the series. I think I'll let my friends buy it first and let me know what they thought of it.
Plus, where the hell is the BFG?? You can't have quake without it! |
Meh.
I'll probably skip it, or wait until it goes down to like $10. I don't really feel like spending the money for 10 hours of gameplay when it doesn't look very good. |
Actually this latest installment of Quake was created primarily by a team called Raven Software, whom iD lent assistance to in updating and working closely with the D3 engine. Raven were the first guys to get thier hands on it, and its been revamped to better handle racey multiplayer, large areas and large numbers of players/monsters. It's supposed to be more like the older quake experiences, more "frantic", not like the Doom 3 *walk walk walk -monster- walk walk -two monsters- walk walk -big monster-*
To Lasereth: "somewhat old engine"? *raises eyebrow* they dont come much newer... (except the hardcore pixelshader engines like U3E... fuck that, I'd rather the game ran) To feelgood: Return to Wolfenstein wasn't an iD effort either. As for Quake 3 being the worst.... that game was the apex of deathmatch, clearly you're not a deathmatcher. |
This would be the first I've heard of it. And likely the last.
|
I'm very pumped about Q4. I had tons and tons of fun with Q1-3 and I look forward to lots of good gaming with this.

Yeah, I agree also. Q3 was indeed the shit.

I'm a diehard Quake series fan but I'm not too excited about this. First, I think Quake 2 was the worst of the series (relative to two other great games), and Q4 is based on it. Second, it does look exactly like Doom 3, which translates into drab aesthetics and a low frame rate (on my box.) Whenever I play RA3 people are saying "I can't wait for Q4," but I have a hard time seeing how this game could improve upon the perfected deathmatch of CPMA/RA3, or even good ol' QuakeWorld.
|
Yeah I cannot see my self buying this untill its at least 15 bucks.
It looks no different then Doom3, and that game was far from impressive other then the random scares it did. Dark gloomy graphics is just not appealing to me. |
You know, I'm not looking forward to this game at all... The quake series kind of revolutionized the FPS genre with each game that came out, especially quake 1. It kind of makes me sad to see that the title of quake is cheapened by some game that uses the doom3 engine... :(
|
PC Gamer had a review of it in their latest issue. If you are looking for a single player experience, they said it can be finished in 10 hours, that includes exploring and dying a bunch against the final boss. I'm gonna pass and wait for it to hit the bargain bin, besides F.E.A.R. comes out this week (21st I think)..
|
Finished the first 2 levels.
First impression: It's not QUAKE 4. It's DOOM 4. I can't make out any perceivable resemblance to the Quake series at all. It's completely DOOM3'ed out. As far as I'm concerned, it's a DOOM3 expansion pack. Dark, muddy and console-like. Needless to say, I'm disappointed. They need to scrap this engine ASAP and start from scratch. Well, it's not all bad. At least they integrated a flashlight into the weapons. |
Quote:
lol, I found that rather humorous. That makes this what doom3 should have been. :) |
I've had my eye on this game, but I'll probably get FEAR before this one. I'll probably pick this one up after I finish FEAR, though, as the graphics here look awesome.

Flashlight is only integrated into 2 guns so far (blaster & machine gun). If you're using the shotgun and switch on the flashlight, it switches to the machine gun with the flashlight on. Unbelievable. So the shotgun doesn't have a light...back to creeeping around in the dark. Plus, I've found 2 instances of overlighted texture polygons, ie. in a location where the entire floor is the same homogenous dark texture in a dark room, there is one bright polygon with a super high brightness value. So there's this large, retarded white patch in the middle of a dark floor. I used to make maps myself, and this is a mapmaking 101 issue. While looking through the (shitty) manual, there's at least 20 people credited as map testers, and they all missed this? How??? The blame for all this lies squarely at the feet of Id Software. Raven has developed games for Id before, and they've rocked. This isn't Raven's fault, it's the shit engine. Id Software no longer makes great pc games, they've sold out to the console market. The "feel" of the old Id games - what made them so great - is gone from their pc games. Oh, and you can't turn off the music. OK, done ranting. :D |
Wait wait wait, Raven made a shitty map and it's id's fault?
|
The maps are fine.
The engine blows. |
I saw Q4 at BestBuy today. On PC-CDROM for $49.99 or DVD for $59.99! An extra ten bucks for the DVD version, unbelievable! All games should be on DVD at no additional cost. Screw it. I bought Serious Sam 2 for $30. I'll buy Q4 when it's less than $30 for the DVD.
|
I got it during lunch, the DVD version, I figured it would be cheaper cause its only one disk instead of 3 or so. Hopefully I'll get some play time in tonight after work and have something to report.
|
Boy, I was hoping for some better reviews . . .
Anyone impressed with it? |
The DVD version comes with Quake 2 and the Quake 2 expansion packs - so it's not "just" 10$ for the DVD. I regularily read Shacknews and there were a lot of people who liked it, and also people who didn't like it. It looks like it's not one of those games that you can half-like (for better or worse).

Old engine - it's just a value added thing, that they stuck it & expansions on there.

If not Raven, then I'm sure that someone in the community probably will. After all, there was a project (I lost track of completion) of porting Doom to the Doom 3 engine, and they were doing a pretty good job from last I heard.
|
Ok I've played it for an hour or so and I just feel like voices some thoughts.
1. The cartoonish weapon icons they brought in from Q3 don't fit well. 2. I like the fact they hide weapons and items out of view like Q2 3. Bringing back some characters from Q2 and updating them is cool. 4. Having people hand you new weapons instead of you finding them is not as fun. 5. I don't know what other people are thinking, the only thing this game has in common with Doom3 is the engine. Sure everything is going to look similar because of that fact. 6. I think the recommended requirements are overrated. I'm playing above what they recommend for my computer and it runs great. 7. So far I'm enjoying it, it definately keeps with the spirit of Q2 (though sometimes you forget you are playing a quake game, not gritty enough), and in my mind that's a good thing. |

Yes, I had to read it twice. |
Sorry about that, let me try to say it differently.
The game scans your system and sets the quality and resolution accordingly. I raised those settings above what it reccomended, and it still runs great. |

I heard about this and I thought I would pick it up, but then I saw it and thought, OK, I played Doom 3, and I played UT 2003. I think I am going to stick to Battlefield 2 (my current love) and wait to see what UT 2007 brings about.
|
I'm probably about 3/4 through the game, and I have to say I like it better than Doom3.
2 reasons: first, the weapons are all very impressive and fun to use; they look/sound/feel great, and second, the gameplay is way more varied and interesting. Yes, walking into rooms still triggers stuff to appear from nowhere, but rooms seem bigger, there always seem to be places to take cover in firefights, and there are actually some pretty fun long-range indoor/outdoor battles, where the railgun/rocket launcher/nailgun come in useful. So, not bad. I still think the graphics are goofy and cartoonish, but...not bad. |
I've only played multiplayer on this so far, but I think it's astounding.
Of course, I've always been an avid Q3 fan, and this doesn't stray too far, so yeah.. I do wish it had bots though. |

I can't believe they're still flogging this tired franchise. Further, I can't believe that with truly innovative games out there, people are actually buying it.
Call me old fashioned, but I expect new games to be original. If I wanted to play Quake 3 or Doom, I'd fire up those games, instead of buying a new one with shinier graphics. Everyone's entitled to their own opinion and popular vote seems to go against mine, but I'll take Knights of the Old Republic or Half-Life 2 over this. Then again, I've been playing The Ur-Quan Masters recently (Star Control II, the 3DO version ported to PC) so obviously my tastes aren't mainstream. |
Well, I have been playing Q4 for a couple of days now, and while it is an okay games, it's not nearly as fun or gritty as Q2 was.
Story is merely ehh, and it's kinda unrealistic and sometimes cheesy. Not to mention the NPC's are dull as hell and kinda nonsensical. I'd have to give it a 7/10. |
Carn, I wonder where in the game you currently are.
Because I have to say, I'm having a blast with this game. I was thrown for a bit of a shock when I first saw the game, because it looks like Doom 3 and I didn't like Doom 3. Well, it looks like Doom 3 but it sure doesn't play like it. And it keeps getting better as you play on. Some truly frightening levels too...I will mention a faulty bridge and leave it at that. Scared the shit out of me, I actually yelled out loud hehe. That particular level was right up there in intensity with the tunnel/underground zombie levels in HalfLife2. The Q4 weapon set is simply awesome. The Lightining Gun is badass. The BFG gun (called something else in Q4) is the best mass damage-type gun since the Doom2 BFG imo. Maybe even better. The gun model definitely looks better. One of the best Grenade Launchers in the series, I'm using it constantly. The Railgun tears shit to pieces. Another cool touch is how the Tech Soldiers can upgrade your weapons, giving them added (and useful) capabilities. Best of all is the gameplay. Tough, old school, well-designed firefights in this game. Room to hide, room to snipe, room to backtrack, multiple ways to attack...and when something does rush into the room its not 2 feet away right on top of you. You have time to plan, and time to switch weapons if necessary. My intitial impressions of the game have done a complete 180. This game is a lot of fun. |
Let me get this straight, most of you are suggesting that Q4 resembles D3? The storyline is nearly the same thing... lone soldier amongst evils (whether from hell or a cybernetic anomoly) that want to kill you. I believe D3 merged into the Quake storyline. If you remember correctly Doom series had a lot of lighting and monsters were strewn here and there with no real use. While quake was always a bit darker and the monsters were doing something (guarding a control panel, guarding ammo, popping through a proximity triggered door behind you (or yes, just standing there looking at a wall).
If anything you should be upset at how successful D3 was because of how it was built. I believe Q4 is generic to the newly themed D3 series. All in all, I.d. miss-stepped when they crossed the themes between those two games. Of course this is all before I even tried the game, which I hope to very soon. Time for me to find the sys req's. *crosses fingers* EDIT: Bah, can't handle it. I'm sad now. |

Also the Ur-Quan Masters kicked liberal amounts of ass. When y'all done with Q4, go find that. It's free, buddy! |
Anybody know how to beat the nexus? I'm there and I can't take the sheild down. Help?

Nevermind, I figured it out.
Warning: ENDING IS SUPER LAME! Veritas en Lux! Jimmy The Hutt |
The only thing I've come to expect from id software is some sort of phenomenal technological achievement with each game. Content and quality gameplay modes I expect from the modding community.

*sigh* i miss when games were original

Edit: Been playing a bit further into the game and am enjoying it more than my bland first review. Late Edit: Finished the game last night. Neat! The later portions of the game are very tactical and actually required me to think! Imagine that! I had to work my way into and through certain rooms and maps due to the foes there. That was far more enjoyable than the later, pentagram-ridden portions of Doom 3. |
You do realise D3 was created almost soley for use in other games, right? Continuing on the Q3 legacy. Expect to see quite a few more ;)
|
Ok I finished the game and I am left wanting more. I greatly enjoyed the game even though the final boss was easier than a previous section of a level. That aside I want to play more levels of this game. Hopefully a lengthy expansion pack will be made, unlike the short tease that was the expansion of Doom3
