I can't believe they're still flogging this tired franchise. Further, I can't believe that with truly innovative games out there, people are actually buying it.
Call me old fashioned, but I expect new games to be original. If I wanted to play Quake 3 or Doom, I'd fire up those games, instead of buying a new one with shinier graphics. Everyone's entitled to their own opinion and popular vote seems to go against mine, but I'll take Knights of the Old Republic or Half-Life 2 over this. Then again, I've been playing The Ur-Quan Masters recently (Star Control II, the 3DO version ported to PC) so obviously my tastes aren't mainstream.

Well, I have been playing Q4 for a couple of days now, and while it is an okay games, it's not nearly as fun or gritty as Q2 was.
Story is merely ehh, and it's kinda unrealistic and sometimes cheesy. Not to mention the NPC's are dull as hell and kinda nonsensical. I'd have to give it a 7/10.

Carn, I wonder where in the game you currently are.
Because I have to say, I'm having a blast with this game. I was thrown for a bit of a shock when I first saw the game, because it looks like Doom 3 and I didn't like Doom 3. Well, it looks like Doom 3 but it sure doesn't play like it. And it keeps getting better as you play on. Some truly frightening levels too...I will mention a faulty bridge and leave it at that. Scared the shit out of me, I actually yelled out loud hehe. That particular level was right up there in intensity with the tunnel/underground zombie levels in HalfLife2. The Q4 weapon set is simply awesome. The Lightining Gun is badass. The BFG gun (called something else in Q4) is the best mass damage-type gun since the Doom2 BFG imo. Maybe even better. The gun model definitely looks better. One of the best Grenade Launchers in the series, I'm using it constantly. The Railgun tears shit to pieces. Another cool touch is how the Tech Soldiers can upgrade your weapons, giving them added (and useful) capabilities. Best of all is the gameplay. Tough, old school, well-designed firefights in this game. Room to hide, room to snipe, room to backtrack, multiple ways to attack...and when something does rush into the room its not 2 feet away right on top of you. You have time to plan, and time to switch weapons if necessary. My intitial impressions of the game have done a complete 180. This game is a lot of fun. |

Let me get this straight, most of you are suggesting that Q4 resembles D3? The storyline is nearly the same thing... lone soldier amongst evils (whether from hell or a cybernetic anomoly) that want to kill you. I believe D3 merged into the Quake storyline. If you remember correctly Doom series had a lot of lighting and monsters were strewn here and there with no real use. While quake was always a bit darker and the monsters were doing something (guarding a control panel, guarding ammo, popping through a proximity triggered door behind you (or yes, just standing there looking at a wall).
If anything you should be upset at how successful D3 was because of how it was built. I believe Q4 is generic to the newly themed D3 series. All in all, I.d. miss-stepped when they crossed the themes between those two games. Of course this is all before I even tried the game, which I hope to very soon. Time for me to find the sys req's. *crosses fingers* EDIT: Bah, can't handle it. I'm sad now.

Also the Ur-Quan Masters kicked liberal amounts of ass. When y'all done with Q4, go find that. It's free, buddy!

Edit: Been playing a bit further into the game and am enjoying it more than my bland first review. Late Edit: Finished the game last night. Neat! The later portions of the game are very tactical and actually required me to think! Imagine that! I had to work my way into and through certain rooms and maps due to the foes there. That was far more enjoyable than the later, pentagram-ridden portions of Doom 3. Last edited by jujueye; 11-17-2005 at 04:43 PM.. |

You do realise D3 was created almost soley for use in other games, right? Continuing on the Q3 legacy. Expect to see quite a few more

Ok I finished the game and I am left wanting more. I greatly enjoyed the game even though the final boss was easier than a previous section of a level. That aside I want to play more levels of this game. Hopefully a lengthy expansion pack will be made, unlike the short tease that was the expansion of Doom3
