FFVII and FFVIII + Win2k + GeForce4
I have a GeForce Ti 4400 on my Windows 2000 machine and was planning on reinstalling and playing through FF7 / FF8 again. Well, it doesn't look like that is going to happen. Both FF7 and FF8 refuse to run, and the official statement I've seen from Square / EA is that they will not support their games under newer OSes or video cards. This is a typical console-port mentality, but it is still infuriating.
Has anyone had any success running PC versions of either of these two games on their Win2k/XP GF4 machine?

My friend runs FF7 on XP often, he's on a Radeon now but I think he used to have a gf4. Only complaint I've heard from him was regarding the motorcycle part of FF7, which is that whoever did the port didn't have the foresight to assume people would upgrade their cpu, it goes really fast, which is a problem.

There's an unofficial FF7 patch for the Riva chipsets which contains the game executable and the setup program - 7 megs, I think. I have a GF4 and as I remember, I had to overwrite the setup exe and leave the original game exe alone, then select a Riva card in the setup... Look for the patch on major FF sites.
As for FF8, there should be one patch, but you would also have to adjust the texel position in Control Panel, otherwise the backgrounds would look like shit - again, check the major FF sites. |
