Peter Jackson producing Halo movie!

Well this is looking better for sure now. I'm glad a reputable name has attached himself to it. At least its not going to be some stupid House of the Dead garbage.

I think i need to change my underwear. I don't much like halo purely because it's microsoft, but you KNOW that movie is going to fucking rule if PJ is behind it.

They're stealing my ideas to make games movies damnit!

Well, it's not like he's directing it. He's executive producing it. The director really makes or breaks a movie. I'm skeptical at best.

Yes, but with PJ producing it, he's not going to let a piece of shit with his name on it be released.

Stiltzkin 10-05-2005 10:32 AM

Even though I'm not a fan of the LOTR movies (except the 3rd one, it rocked my socks), I still find this exciting.

PJ has Weta behind him, and we all know how damned good they are at their job thanks to him. The SFx will rule.

Hmm...I'm gonna say that this movie is gonna suck...

If Hollywood follows its laws again, all movies based on gaming sucks, just look at the previous ones.

Wing Commander
House of Dead
Resident Evil
Alien vs Predator
Tomb Raider
Mario Bros

So on, so forth

Name me one movie that was based on games that turned out to be good. Heck, I'm even already betting the Doom's movie will suck too.

Wing Commander - Freddie Prinze Jr., 'nuff said.
House of Dead - Ewe Boll. Ugh, he's responsible for 90% of the shit video game movies
Resident Evil - I thought it was pretty well done. Granted, the 2nd one did suck.
Alien vs Predator - Again, I liked, and this wasn't really based on a video game at all. Its just coincidence that there was an AVP game as well.
Tomb Raider - I also enjoyed this one, but like RE, the 2nd one did suck as well.
Mario Bros - Some games should remain games, and this was one.

The point still remains, Peter Jackson, the head of one of the most popular trilogies of all time, is heading up this movie. They haven't even released the cast yet, and if you were following how tightly Bungie is being with who does this movie, you would know why I am defending it so much.

I'm disappointed that this movie is going to get made before Ringworld...

Peter Jackson is the Exe Producer for the movie, that doesn't necessary mean that he's gonna make alot of decisions for the movie. Everybody has different opinion, I guess in my case, the 2 main reason why games should never make the screen is this:

Its always use some lame storyline (Look at Resident Evil movie) as a excuse to start killing everything in sight. Those kind of thing are great for games, but for movies, the concept kinda wore itself out, especially in zombie based movies.

OR

The storyline is too long and complex, examples of this would be Metal Gear Solid, which would never made it to the big pictures unless a studio is desperately looking for new idea and figures that they should make another 3 movies, 3 hours each series like LOTR.

Most of the game that made it to the screen are games I love, and I'm kinda disappointed that Microsoft/Bungie decided to allow Universal/Fox to make the movie for Halo.

I'm kinda curious as to who they're gonna cast for Master Chief and Sgt Johnson among other characters. Some people on Fark mentioned that Samuel Jackson should play Johnson which is a pretty good idea. As for Master Chief, they should go with someone that isn't well known, I'd hate to associate Master Chief's character with other movies.

He's not heading it- far from it. He's not Producer, he's Executive Producer. When it comes down to it, he will have certain sections of the production under his command, most likely the cg elements, but will almost certainly have no creative control over the movie as a whole.

I have hopes, but the best people in the world will crumble at the hands of a shitty script.

crazybobmarley 10-06-2005 03:20 PM

Nobody seems to remember what he did before LOTR, regardless of his role here, producer, executive whatever

http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0001392/

I see about 5 huge pieces of shit right there, and 1/2 of LOTR was CGI anyways, it would have been extremely difficult to mess up LOTR, it was all laid out

I heard they were actually books before the movies too, who knew

The_wall 10-06-2005 04:06 PM

I think this movie might actually be pretty good. I think the plot to halo works much better in a movie than a game like Mortal Combat, or even resident evil for that matter. And knowing P.J has something to do with the movie boosts my confidence a little bit.

Quick question, what is the role of an executive producer?

Coppertop 10-07-2005 07:25 AM

Funny, I thought MGS was a movie.

There is no set definition for what an Executive Producer does... also it vastly differs from film to television.

In film, the executive producer is, generally speaking, the person who pulls the financing together. This is nothing to sneeze at. That said, it is not unheard of for an executive producer to also take a direct hand in being the Producer of the film as well.

A producer can be thought of like a Contractor. They buy a property and then they hire a crew to make a house on the property. In film, a producer options or buys the rights to a script, or hires a writer to write a script. Works with the writer to fine tune the script. The producer hires the Director, the DP, the Editor, etc. (sometimes the Director has a say in some of these hires as well).

The producer runs all the financials and coordinates the various heads of department and makes sure that the money in in the accounts on payday (or is available for the accountant to put into the accounts).

Sometimes, the executive producer that is a bit more "hands on" will have a lot more say in how things are run or done... sometimes not. I have a feeling that Peter Jackson is more likely to be a bit more hands on than most Executive Producers. Also, from the trades I read, it looks like his wife and writing partner (both of whom worked on King Kong and LOTR) are on board as well. I'd say they are going to have a big hand in the writing of the script.

On Television, it is another world altogether. On Television the Executive Producer can be someone like Jerry Bruckheimer who finances and develops different series, but most often they are really the creator and head writer. Think Joss Wedon, Chris Carter, Devid E. Kelly and you have the right picture. They are much more in control of the creative look and feel and direction of their series than any weekly director for hire. They are often called "show runners" in the business.

Actually, the books are viturally impossible to put into film as are. Even Tolkien himself knew that, and sold the rights for pitance because he never thought that his works could make it to silver screen.

PJ is an incredible talented guy, he'll do good.

I for one do recall what he made before LOTR... I was a fan of his before LOTR. I was at the premiere of Braindead at the Toronto International Film Festival.

If you look back on some of the early threads where we were talking about Fellowship getting ready to open you will see that I was excited not only becasue I love LOTR but because Peter Jackson was the man behind it all...

Heavenly Creatures (top notch film)
Braindead (one of the best gorey comedies ever)
Meet the Feebles (muppet and gore, independent and excellent)

Frankly, I don't think you know what you are talking about...

Ok I will say it, I rather liked Mortal Kombat.

The first one was alright, the second one was laughably bad. And laugh I did. Hoo boy.
