Goldeneye to come out as HL2 mod.

The site's slow, but it gives the skinny on the recreation of Goldeneye on Half-Life 2.

http://www.goldeneyesource.com/

Here's the joystiq article I got the news from:
http://www.joystiq.com/entry/1234000050057755/

For the clicking impaired (or the impatient since that first link is slower than shit.)

KF7 Soviet Goldeneye Source

As many a N64 owner and Goldeneye player knows, the KF7 Soviet was one of the most well balanced virtual rifles from any fps in the last 8 years. The above shot is of an updated model of this classic running in the Half-Life 2 engine. With the aim of recreating the game (including all the guns and maps) a team of 36 dedicated fans of the original Goldeneye title are slaving away with tools from Valve’s Source engine. They’re trying to create a mod based on the original revolutionary first person shooter and at time of writing, the modders have brought a total of 22 weapons models to the 21st century. They’re also continuing to tweak the maps and have completed work on the legendary “Temple” map.

The team are currently working on perfecting the run speed, a vital aspect of any first person shooter. They’ll have to get this right in order to truly replicate the Goldeneye experience. It won’t be an easy task either, Goldeneye had a unique feeling to the controls, with the pseudo-sequel Perfect Dark being the closest in style. Whilst replicating the original is important, adding new features is equally so. They’re integrating a “peek round corners” function, which hopefully won’t detract from those moments you won’t care what’s round the corner. You really did feel invincible with an RCP-90 in each hand. The mod will be free for all owners of Half-Life 2 and is currently at Alpha status. They’re also looking for volunteers to help out with the project.

Sounds like a worthy pursuit to me since I loved playing Goldeneye in multiplayer mode (ahhh, the memories). It'll be interesting to see if it translates well to the source engine though....

It sounds like they're really working to recreate the feel. I'd like to see paintball mode implemented.

I've had my eyes on this for a while. I love the new remixes of the music they've got. I believe they've got the same composer that did God of War.

This looks really promising, and I can't wait for them to release a multiplayer version to the public.

Will it have four player split screen? Four player split screen is the revolution of first person shooters!

My fave was always the remote detonation mines. I'd detonate them in mid air and called them "frisbees of death."

If anyone implemented something like this in a mod, I would seriously have to worship them. daily. with sacrificial lambs.

would be nice though.

project seems like a good idea, but it also seems like something that will fade away long before we get a playable beta.

Saving people the trip by posting some of the pics here. Hotlinking, so I'm not really saving them bandwidth. Yeah, I'm an asshole. There's three more pages if you're interested.

wtf? If you were even alive when the game came out, there is simply no excuse for this. You can get an N64 for about $15, and Goldeneye for another $3. You really gotta get some multiplayer split screen up ins.

I'm not to worried about the look, but the feel of Goldeneye has never been duplicated. Walking gunfire across multiple targets with the analog stick, shootin berrets off of soldiers with a silenced PPK, the great level design and mission objectives, escaping from a prison cell with nothin but a knife, that was an amazing game. If they could get this right, I'd pay more for that than I would for HL2.

The N64 analog stick actually worked very well. Too bad all the console makers decided to make those stubby annoying thumbsticks.

I hope you get to choose Oddjob as a character. My cousin always ran around as that short bastard but I made up for it in headshots.

Actually, going jaws against oddjob wasn't so bad, cause they had to look up sp high in order to get a headshot (in close combat) - although this didn't count in license to kill! License to Kill with pistols or snipers was always my favourite mode

um, many of you fail to realise that Goldenye already was out as a mod for HL1. The mod was awesome and I cannot wait for it to come out for HL2.

During our Goldeneye marathon death matches on the weekend, we had to expressly forbid crouching Oddjob. One of the smarmier (is that even a word..?) figured out it was almost impossible to shoot the little bastard under most circumstances.

All I can say is this looks fantastic and might even be worth breaking out HL2 again if it plays even half as well as it looks.

Bring on paintball mode!

Oddjob is a nasty bugger. Blow up a crate, go inside the remains and crouch, then look down. Totally disappear.

Is this meant to be released as a single player expansion mod or solely multiplayer? It seems like people would rather have it as multiplayer, but from their site when they say that they are working to make it exactly like the N64 game experience, I thought that meant single player. Though I guess it could be both.

They wrote on their forum, "If the multi-player version goes well, which is what we are doing right now, we will also do the single-player." I still think Goldeneye was the best game on the N64, and probably the most interesting game to come out of Nintendo in about the last 10 years to me anyway.

If this does come out I may accidentally starve myself playing it. It had to be the most addicitive game I'd ever played up to that point. Next to Tetris.
