I just tried a VCD on mine and it worked fine, just like a DVD.
Mine is not chipped, but its a UK PAL PS2, so I don't know if that has anything to do with it.

From what I know, anything burned using a home CD burner needs a mod chip to be played.

and your chip needs to be able to play the vcd svcd i believe. There are VCD players available for the PS2 also. They would need a chip to be run. Datel has an Action Replay that lets you play Divx though, but it won't work on the new slim PS2
