Xbox problems

Hey everyone, I was just wondering if anyone else is having problems with their Xbox machines. I believe I have a thompson drive in mine, and I bought it about 4 years ago, but the "dirty disc error" message is coming up rather often in some games now. I was reading on the internet about how the thompson drive kinda sucks, but I don't know. Anyone know any refurbishing places for cheap, cuz the 360 is comin out and I'm not so sure about spending so much on the older one. Thanks a million!

go for modchipman if you want a modded refurb. Not sure if they will refurb yours, though. You should look into that. And I highly recommend getting it modded, and even get a HDD upgrade.

I've had mine for about 3 years now but the only problem I've been getting from it is that disc tray doesn't seem to want to open all the way sometimes, I've never damaged it before, this just happened one day and has been doing it a lot more often here the past few months.

On that note, I read from most Xbox problems is that the laser reader might've been worn out or damaged somehow and could easily be replaced by ordering part from the manufactor or something like that. I could be wrong though.

Kinda sucks that Xbox doesn't last as long as Super Nintendo, then again, Super Nintendo doesn't have a disk drive like Xbox or PS series

Not wrong at all. I had a similar problem not too long ago. $30 altogether got me a brand new drive (I don't really care if it's a thompson, it's only got to last till the end of November anyway ).

$5 at Wal*Mart for a screw driver set with the right tools in it and about 20 minutes of my time one afternoon and wham-o, bam-o my X-box problems are over.

Well, it should carry me over to the 360 comes out at the very least.

Wow, that seems like a good deal. I bought a laser lens cleaner and it seems to have done the trick. No telling though, I'll have to play it more to see what happens

I have a Ver 1.0 Xbox with a Thompson drive in it now. I've been using my Xbox for a stepstool for the past few weeks. This weekend I ordered a Phillips drive with a new ATA cable for faster loading. I'll do the upgrade and report on it.

Sweet deal Rip, I used a dvd cleaner on my box and it seemed to have lowered the amount of error messages i've seen. So I don't know, I may end up ordering a new drive anyway, we'll just have to see. How much was the drive that you got? and is it hard to install yourself?

I have had mine from launched and thus a thompson drive and have had not a single problem with it yet. I'm very lucky. Like guthmind said, its so easy to replace the drive. Just make sure its compatible. Check a modding site for exact specs.

I had a friend who had similar problems with her xbox, but we managed to fix it. We just opened up the xbox and cleaned the lens on the dvd drive. If you have any questions on how to do this, you can check out xbox scene. They have comprehensive guides on how do this, and other things.

While your at it, clean out your poor dusty xbox

It's probably just dirty. Clean the lense and mirror underneath it with a q-tip and rubbing alcohol.

Replacement of DVD Drive and IDE cable was completed yesterday evening. It boots up just fine. No DDE's to report last night, more testing to follow this weekend. Loading speed shows a very slight improvement.

$107.00, with shipping.

My friend had an initial release XBox and it couldn't run Halo 2. He was quite furious.

Can you guys with troubles run older games, or just not newer games?

initial release = Thompson DVD Drive.

Early media used with the xbox was single layer. Thompson drives had no trouble with that. Newer, fancier games are larger in size, hence the use of dual-layered DVDs to pack all the information into a single disc. Up until my upgrade, I had trouble with several games, including Ninja Gaiden, KOTOR, and Jade Empire. Rather frustrating to get DDEs twenty minutes into a board. Since the upgrade, no problems, and I like it that way.

Well, after some playing, I'm getting the DDE's again. Where did y'all pick up the new drives? I may have to get one and see how it goes! And also if you could direct me to any type of how-to guide, that would be great! Thanks!
