GameCube Repair

A buddy gave me a broken GameCube not too long ago and said that if I can fix it, it's mine. (Even if I don't fix it, it's still mine, but then I have a big platinum colored brick). I already have a Game Cube, so I hooked the broken system up, and it boots up fine, controller ports work fine, but it won't load any of the discs. I'm thinking it's the laser that's no good. Does anyone know of any reliable websites that I can order a GC laser assembly for? lik-sang used to have them, but they're sold out

You've got a GameCube that doesn't work properly? Did you post that message from this dimension?

IMPOSSIBLE!

I would be inclined to be suprised that your gamecube doesn't work, in fact, i am suprised, but not as much as i would be seeing my OFFFICIAL ninty memory card deletes my zelda games forcing me to buy a new one

Have you tried contacting ninty themselves to get a list of suppliers? They're usually pretty helpful (usually...).

You are in luck.

I remember running across this site when I was trying to find a replacement DVD for my XBox.

Replacement Gamecube Laser thingy

You'll also need a special tool to crack the case. One site says it's just a standard torx, a full set might run a couple of bucks, another says it's sort of triangle shaped, which is going to cost like $15, I can't say for sure, because I'm at work and don't have a gamecube sitting in front of me.

No instructions come with the replacement part, so, you'll have to play it by ear. Here's something about the disassembly to peruse at your leisure.

Hope it helps

At the most, all this is going to cost you (unless you find a cheaper laser assembly) around $65 + S&H, while a brand new Cube runs, what, $99? If it were me, I'd probably order the damn part because I hate to give up and love to tinker around with stuff. With a difference of about $30 between refurbished and brand new, I guess the question is...would it be worth it to repair?

It's triangle shaped. They used to be normal screws, but ninty found everyone kept breaking into the N64, so they changed the screws for the GC.

Yeah, now I know.

It's kind of sad, but the first thing I did when I came home was flip the Gamecube over and check.

BOO-YAH! Thank you guthmund, you are teh 1337.

Mr. Deflok: Yeah, that was my reaction when my friend gave me the 'Cube. "A broken GameCube? Such thing exists?"

And yeah, the GC has an inverted hex/torx screwhead. Luckily my girlfriend's brother has routinely opened his SNES, which I guess uses the same screwhead. lik-sang.com calls it a "GameBit" so I guess that's the official name for it. Also the three-pronged screwhead that they use on game carts and GBA's is the "triwing".

Edit: Ouch, $45 for the laser replacement. Technically I paid $50 for my GameCube from a second-hand CD store (and an additional $15 for the Zelda Collectors Disc )
