Pricey?
I was just about to post about this.. but anyway, here are a few more links to some pictures
It looks sleek, and the idea of no more memory cards is nice. But in the end this is all going to come down to price for most people and what they already have/need/want. Stand-alone DVD recorders currently can go from $600-$1000. Eighty hour Tivo2 units go for over $300. I can't see Sony cramming a 'high-end' home entertainment system that has a DVD recorder, satellite tuner, PVR functionality, network connection, + PS2 into one box for $300-$400. Anything over that is going to make think twice about buying it no matter what it does.

Remember this is not going to be out for almost a year and will be sold in japan where they pay for cool gadgets like this.
I think it's pretty cool, and I might pick it up when my roommate with the PS2 moves out, but then it will be what? 1, 2 more years until the PS3? |

Agreeness on looks. It looks like any other piece of electronic stuff you'd set on or under your TV. But, if they can sell all that for $300, it wouldn't be throwing money away.
Now all they need is a new design team and color options... |

This thing can do everything my computer can already do, except play PS2. Which doesn't really matter cause I have a PS2. It's just a waste of money. I'd rather see them concentrate on the PS3 so Microsoft doesn't embarass them too much when XBOX 2 comes out.

If you actually look up information about this, the PSX is a modified Playstation 2. It plays PS1 and PS2 games, just like a regular PS2. The only differences are the facts that it plays DVDs in better coding and options now, in higher resolutions if available. It also does not have a firewire port for linking PS2s together. The PSX is made so that companies may be able to design small OS's for it too. It's just an upgraded PS2 with more features. Waste of money.
The PS3 is a long way off, and with good reason. None of the console systems out right now are doing that bad, and all three still have years ahead of them of mainstream gaming. The gaming industry is NOT ready for more consoles; our current ones are still doing great. And I'm not even going to start on arguing on a console debate. People favor Gamecube because it's pure-gaming and has the world "Nintendo" in it; people favor the PS2 because of it's extreme popularity from the PS1 and it's library and games; people favor the XBox because it is the powerhouse of all three. All three systems have advantages and disadvantages; neither is better than another. Play the games and have fun, that's all that matters. -Lasereth

Thank you, Lasereth. That is the most unbiased, sensible thing I've heard anyone say about video game consoles in a long time. You are right on the money.

I agree too. It seems that they want to give to PS2 what the Xbox have or can be easyly modified to have. Good thinking I guess. The style seems to flirt with the htpc (home theater PC) market that want a small multifunction box sitting unnoticed among the other media equipment. But the style may change until when we see it in our markets.
Could work, but it may be a little too late with so few to none amazing new features. Just what the PS2 should have been from start. A neccessary upgrade but nothing revolutionary. But until the market ships out excellent hardware with excellent software for Home Teater, TV, Music, Games, Internet, Photos etc., all in one box and easy to use at affordable prices, then the do-it-yourself market mainly based on PC systems will be untouched and the game consoles will mainly be just game consoles. I think PS3 and XBOX 2 also will have a hard time to be more than the super-game machines they are. To move to high-end home multimeda multifunctions centers it takes a different multipurpose hardware and OS system that will take time to develop. Microsoft will try hard on the PC platform (Media Center)and there is alot of other great projects like myHTPC (www.myhtpc.net) that are in the frontline and will make the PC rule this for years to come. That's my theories...

What the hell is that? Why is sony doing this now, and not at the beggining like when they should have. IS this some kind of last ditch marketing ploy or what? Perhaps that should concentrate more on the Ps3 and if they're supposedly entering the handheld market they have alot to do to even scrattch the gameboy.

Lasereth: IMO you are correct that if you already own a PS2 then there is little value in the PSX, but if you don't (like myself) the extra features make it really attractive even though were a ways into it's product cycle. |

just read an article in the paper about the psx the other day. If they are not out in japan already they will be soon, retailing at about 900 bucks can (or us, I wasn't sure by the article). I would love to have a dvd recorder but I am sure next year or so that will be standard for all dvd players.
i can wait. |
