HL2 vs Doom^3

Now that I've gotten my new gaming machine, I'm looking at getting either Half Life 2 or Doom 3

Here's the real kick, I only want one of them. Eventually, I'll get the other one but for now...just one.

From word of mouth, Half life 2 is story-oriented while Doom 3 is explosive oriented game. My dilemma is this, I like both kind of game. So, I wanted to hear some opinion from both camp on which game I should get.

Well, I'll have to recommend HL2. It'll bring the goods in the explosives area, don't worry about that. It's not as balls to the wall as often, but Doom3 just felt like a cosmetic upgrade. Besides, the HL2 crossbow will make you thank the lord for first person shooters. Not to mention the gravity gun.

Bottom line is that you are more likely to be dissapointed with Doom3. HL2 offers no dissapointments, especially on a fast machine which will keep the load times down. Only dissapointment is that HL2 will leave you more wet for a sequel than Doom3.

HL2, its good throughout the entire game. Doom3, its good for the first 5 minutes and then its just super repetitive. HL2 has amazing effects also, I think far superior to Doom 3. The story and gameplay blow Doom3 out of the water.

HL2. Hands down. Doom 3 gets old really fast. You also get Counter-Strike: Source for free with HL2.

HL2 man. I have both and don't play Doom3 at all. Made it to the 4th level or so and was bored.

HL2. Replay and online value as well. Not to mention the single player is MUCH better.

Half-Life 2

I had exponentially more fun with HL2 than I ever did with Doom 3... I remember when it first came out I was watching my roommate play, and ~3 hours into it I just fell asleep... repetitive.

On the other hand... I spent almost 10 straight hours playing Half-Life 2 the first time I booted it up. The far superior purchase IMO.

I've played all the way through both HL2 and Doom3, both were good games, but only HL2 was an AWESOME game. I was really disappointed by the story drop at the end of Doom3 but I haven't played the expansion yet. I never got to kill the boss that I really wanted a shot at!

Half-Life 2 all the way. Doom 3 is little more than a pretty engine that you never see much of.

Half Life 2 for me.

As soon as you load HL2 you get the feeling that everything is more polished and classier. The package you get with HL2 is better value CSS Source etc..

So deffo HL2 all the way

HL2 100%.
It's so much better than DOOM 3 it's crazy. For the record I own both. Played DOOM 3 once, and cheated through the last half just so I could get it over with and see the end.
Just bought HL2 a little while ago and as soon as I finish it I plan on playing through it again. It's an amazing game...

Good decision.

The only downside is that no FPS will ever compare and will seem worse now. Apart from maybe FEAR. I have completed HL2 about a month ago and havent played anything since (PES4 aside)

Hope you get it for the weekend

ACtually, no, I was too busy working on final projects and study for exams to bother to check.

Of a choice between those two games I'd tell him to make his own decision on the subject and read some reviews.

Personally, I played HL2 through once in six (Boring) hours, attempted to play it through again and got bored 10 minutes in. Tried again the next week and the process repeated. I've played Doom 3 through about 3 times and its still fun. The story was better, the world was better the characters were better and the engine looks 10X better, which isnt surprising since its a Next Gen engine whereas SOURCE is the HL engine with some steroids to keep up with the time. /rant

Hope you're enjoying your new system though with whichever game you bought.

Haha! I've been labelled a Doom 3 Supporter now have I? Well I guess it's true to a certain extent, I enjoyed Doom 3 far more than I did HL2, the main reason being that I couldn't connect with the game they way it wanted me to. I didn't care about Gordon, I didn't care about the resistance, I didn't care about the aliens. The game felt more to me like a Tech-Demo for the Source Engine.

Doom 3 on the other hand was a game that didn't try to be anything it wasn't, it set out to be a straight-forward atmospheric mindless shooter and it succeeded on all accounts. From a technical standpoint the Doom 3 engine is superior too, the game however did not showcase it in it's entirety.

For me, personally, Doom 3 is the better game, I understand that most of you disagree and I respect your opinion, hopefully you aren't all going to flame me for mine which is what always happens to the Doom 3 supporters in threads like this.

EDIT: The Doom 3 Expansion is brilliant, much more faster paced than Doom 3 itself, in other news HALF LIFE 2's expansion has been announced:

No, I was trying to bring some balance to the thread... What if feelgood hates it? He comes on here and says, "Why didn't any of you say Doom 3? THIS GAME SUCKS!!!"

I loved Doom 3 to death. It just had a ton of atmosphere and awesome graphics. That's what Doom games are. Awesome graphics and tons of atmosphere. I yelled and shouted at the computer more in Doom 3 than in Half-Life 2. HL2 was a superior game, if you want to get into the "technicalities", but I was on the edge of my seat with sweaty palms much more in Doom 3. I mean come on, getting teleported to Hell? Fucking excellent. I had a grin on my face for an hour. I loved the game.

Sadly, if I had to make one purchase, I would go with Half-Life 2, for the sheer technical standpoint, but I have to agree with the other guy also. I didn't really care about Gordon or the "resistance." I was just playing it, like Doom 3. Doom 3 didn't try to make a boring plot interesting, it was just there to make you kill stuff over and over. Gotta salute that
