A role playing game for mature audiences.
I've played many many RPGs over the years, from SNES to Playstation, even ye olde bard's tale (brilliant) but one thing i've yet to see is an edgy, modern/post modern RPG game aimed for the older generation, yet with final fantasy style game play i.e. parties and possibly turn-based or ATB (sp?) combat. I love my final fantasy don't get me wrong, but i'd love to see the current surge of mature games spill over into the RPG genre. Vampire: The Masquerade, is definitely a good start, so i've heard, but it's not in that party based combat style of Final Fantasy.
Anyway, what i'd like to know is what you'd do if you were making an RPG for mature audiences? The soundtrack? Characters? Combat System? Story? or any other features.. if they had something like that out there now i'd definitely give it a go. I'll post my own reply later tonight. I've got a lecture in 5 mins. Peace. |
i like gauntlet legends for consoles.. i mean, thats the closest thing i can think of, its actually pretty fun :)

Definately a max payne style conspiracy tale, with or without New York-Noir grittyness, but definately the same badass attitude. Now throw in leveling and party-formation, and then travelling/tracking-the-bad-dude to different cities thru clues you pick up. Then mean gunfights, with maybe like an ADnD point/click interface. You know what I mean, like Baldurs Gate, just set up whos attacking who and watch the lead fly. And probably some irrelevant hookers in the scenery, you know, just for kicks, GTA style. Also, load all your party into a vehicle, and fire out the windows. Awesome stuff.
Man, that game would rule hard. Or something. |
Ahh, crap. I just posted as Lucian cos he DIDN'T LOG OUT OF MY COMPUTER YA SILLY FUCKIN FACE. Gyarr. So yeah, the above post is mine. Please keep that in mind next time you're using my comp on the TFP man. Average performance.

Not played it so sorry if I am wayout but the Fallout series sounds similar.
Apparently they are classed as RPGs with more adult/mature themes. Well they definitely dont look like Zelda and FF etc.. |
You see, this is why we need a Shadowrun sequel.
|
I am all for that Shadowrun sequel, and a slew of sweet Shadowrun Novel based movies as well. As for Fallout, that is definitely the style that Lucian is describing, but it doesn't exactly have the FF combat system. I have heard rumors of Fallout 3 finally getting a chance to be made, but I'm not sure if it was true or not.

Fallout, System Shock, Planescape
All are excellent RPGs for adults. All vary in their approach to it, but are good nonetheless. |
If you can find them, Gothic and Gothic II are very adult orientated.
|
Arcanum is a pretty good game. Political correctness are nonexistant in that game. Some quests are easier for females than for males. If you need info, for example, a guy would use a bribe or force. For a gal, sleeping with him is an added option.
|
Shadow Hearts for the PS2 also has more adult themes than most RPGs.
|
System Shock 2 rocks. Get the high-detail enemy mod, and it rocks more.
Babies need fresh meat! |

A friend of mine really liked Arcanum as well. |
I hate to say it though but American and Eurpopean rpgs are soo... not fun for me. I guess that one time I was a kid and my character died on "Eye of Beholder" because I didn't eat made me hate american rpg's for the rest of my life. Well there was one exception. Neverwinter nights, beautiful game.

I love fallout, so much in fact I'm replaying through Fallout 2 right now, that game was mature before we even knew what the hell a mature rating was.
|
You should play Kingdom Hearts...

Yeah, Fallout is definitely for mature audiences. I love that game, but I never got a chance to finish it. Got most of the way through, but then school started :\
