suggest a good first person shooter to try...
Hello, I will admit it, yes I am not ashamed, I absolutely suck hardcore at first person shooter games. I've played Doom, Soldier of Fortune and I think it was called Postal so years ago. I gave up playing them very early as I could never get my head around the shooting aspect. I usually only play sports games on the computer and ps2.
Now I was looking for a good first person shooter to try and get the hang of it again. I have some time at night to practice and play so I thought I would give it shot again (pun intended). Now I was think a good war type game, no "monster and goblins" games. Not my bag. Any suggestions on war fps that might give a beginner like me a chance to master and have some fun? New or old games either will do. thanks for any info! |
Break out the Nintendo 64, give it a good dusting, and then go find a copy of Goldeneye and rejoice in its splendor.

Easy... go buy Half-Life (I hear its like $10 now) and you get Counter-Strike and Day of Defeat for free with it. I have spent countless hours playing all three games.
|
Medal of Honor.......any of them
|
cheers for the suggestions. let the games begin!
|
Go get Battlefield 1942, Medal of Honor or Call of Duty. No monsters, no goblins, and if you have a decent system (1.4 Ghz+, Nvidia 4 series or ATI 8 series and above) and you'll have a damn good time of it! Enought WWII action to go around for all.

Unreal Tournament 2K4 is cool if your into online FPS.
|
I would second the Halflife and Counter Strike suggestion, They are great games. If you were hoping more for a platform game then Medal of Honor and the Rising Sun one does have multiplayer so you can test your skills against other people.
Really the best FPS is Halo but seeing as how you have Ps2, thats out of the question. I would also like to warn you that the James Bond games for Ps2 are not very good, at least I did not like them. |
As suggested before, Half-Life and Call of Duty.

You can't go past quake 1 as far as i'm concerned.
|
Deus Ex still owns the single player =)
|
FarCry for immersive, huge outdoor areas and vehicle driving.
Ghost Recon if you want realism. Half-Life 2 for excellent physics. Counter-Strike for pure addictive gaming. Deus Ex for FPS RPG style gaming. Serious Sam 1 & 2 for run-backwards-and-strafe style gaming. edit - ah crap, only war games? Ok, go with Ghost Recon and the expansions for PC. Cannot be beat. |
I still play Unreal Tournament 2004 a lot. I highly reccommend it.
|
Battlefield 1942 gives a good sense of a complete battlefield.
|
I used to play Return To Castle Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory. It's offered as a free download online, and it's decent.

There used to be a star trek level for this game that was quite neat too. |
If you do get UT2k4 look into downloading the Red Orchestra mod. Easily the best WW2 infantry FPS to date. It does have vehicles on two or three maps, but they kinda suck. Online only of course.
|
wow lots to choose from, thanks again everyone, gonna pick up some games tomorrow at eb.
|
I still enjoy the original Unreal Tournament, but I'm thinking about picking up UT2K4.

I know you said no monsters but I seriously think you should try two games.
1) Halo may have aliens but that game is soooo user friendly. I was never the greatest at any first person shooters until I played halo. It's definitely worth it. 2) For PS2, Killzone is not a bad game to try. Killzone technically has "aliens" but they look like humans and they speak english so its just like shooting someone you hate (always good for stress relief). Especially due to the fact that the aiming is kinda jumpy. If you can master that and have high accuracy, you will be good at any 1st person shooters. Plus, it's kinda challenging so it keeps you goin for hours. |
