I've just d/l'd the client and I'm ready to start but I had a couple of questions I won't be getting answers to in a tutorial...

- What's it like to solo in this game? Is joining a corp the only way to get through life (or the universe and everything)

I soloed my first 500 million or so in assets. Soloing is fine but the missions get VERY old after a while.

- Can any race join any corp? [edit got this one, requires a special skill]

Any race can join any player corp. You need standing to join npc corps, but thats not hard to get.

- how often do newbs get ganked and then have their pod ganked as well? assuming i don't do stupid stuff like take my newb ship to low security areas

Low sec isn't as dangerous as you think, but you will get ganked. I finally got ganked in low sec but that wasn't until I was there for over a month.

- how many game missions require spawn camping for a unique mob? (are they called mobs in space?) I think I might have played in the beta for this game and recall that being an issue...

I've never spawn camped for anything in eve.

and finally, how much new content has been added since release? are the devs active?

Devs are very active and expansions are free. There is a very big one comming up.

portwineboy 04-18-2006 07:51 AM

Thanks for the answers. I got part way through the tutorial last night and I'm looking forward to seeing what else there is to explore.

My ingame name is Cailynt Tar but that may change if (more like when) I reroll.

I've got a few weeks off coming up to recover from surgery so I'm hoping to have some serious gametime.

portwineboy 05-15-2006 08:07 AM

Well I've been playing almost a month now and I'm still enjoying the game. Right now I'm trying to build up my bank account by hauling NPC trade goods between stations...once you get a certain amount of capital it's easy to build up more if you are willing to watch and wait. I still haven't joined a corp so low-sec is off limits most of the time. I had my freighter (Badger II) blown to hell and gone by gate camping pirates in .4 space Friday night so I've learned to watch more closely where I go. (luckily it was empty)

I'm not sure what route I want to take and it seems most corps are pigeonholing people into specific areas. For now, I'm just an indy indy driver and really having quite a bit of fun. I should hit 500k SP tonight or tomorrow. I think in about 2 weeks I should be ready to buy my first Ferox BC and I'm greatly anticipating that moment.

Still, this is what I was hoping Earth and Beyond would be...

So, ASCN crushed Tribal Souls. See any action in that campaign, Ustwo?

Now you've been part of ASCN for a while, what's life like in 0.0 compared to life in empire?

Chytrak 06-01-2006 09:31 PM

Port, sounds like you are getting sucked into EVE like the rest of us. You should be well past 1 million SP by now. Believe me, I have been playing a little over a year and I am still learning things. Even with 15 million skillpoints, it's a drop in the bucket. Always will be a ship I can't fly, and a gun I can't use. :)

I was out of town for that weekend, and being TS was such a screwed up alliance, a weekend is all the "fight" was.

I like 0.0 and I like ASCN, my corp is the suck. CEO doesn't have a clue, which explains why they were taking noobs in 0.0 I guess (because they bleed quality members). I'm just biding my time for now.

Raleighbum 06-19-2006 03:41 PM

Loving my new ship.. Moonshine.. The Damnation.

not gonna go for the capitals quite yet. WE should have a TFP meeting one day there in 0.4 or something ;)

bermuDa 06-19-2006 04:09 PM

Seems that some interesting stories come out of this game. It doesn't seem that anyone has mentioned this escapade yet: The Great Scam by Nightfreeze

I have never played the game and probably never will (just can't really get into RPG's), but I found the story to be very entertaining.

Dustallica 06-30-2006 08:07 PM

Well im downloading it now and I am going to try out the trial period. If it delivers on its potential then ill likely pay for a subscription. I hope to see some of you in the vast reaches of space.

EDIT
**Apparently I am not going to try the trial period as everywhere I attempt to sign up keeps asking for money.

I dont mind the subscription fee, but im not sure I want to drop the money on something I havent played before and on something that seems as deep and complex as this game.

Dont want to spend the money and end up being stuck somewhere I shouldnt be.

So is there a TFP Corp up and running yet?

I just restarted the game last night - Characters are Bruxieus and Polynikes Domen

Zeraph 07-06-2006 03:07 PM

So I'm a bit confused with the death system and it is the biggest things preventing me from playing. It sounds like when you die, you lose everything? Or at least your ship, if it's destroyed? Arn't the big ships really exepensive and take forever to make? Do you lose you skill? What are you left with? Etc.

Main question summed up is how much time is it possible to lose? If you have one of those expensive ships, is it really possible to lose all that time and effort?

It's divided up a bit.

You can insure your ship for up to it's worth in the pieces that are used to make it (The ore and stuff). If your ship is des troyed you lose what's in it and what's on it (weapons, items, any parts you've hooked up to it like cargo expanders, armor, etc.) That's not insured.

When your ship is destroyed you're floating through space in a pod, which can be destroyed and if you're killed by a real ass hole chances are it will be, which is why you invest in clones. These clones save X amount of skill points for you which if you die without a clone you're up shit creek and have to start completely over. Clones cost money, the more skill points attached to your clone the more money it costs for you to have.

If you lose your ship or your clone, you could lose a LOT of time and effort, or you can lose just money and a little time. Depends on how updated your insurance and all that is.

Bazan_Kor 07-07-2006 01:42 AM

The best rule for dying in eve is don't fly what you cant afford to lose because you CAN and WILL lose it. It is possible to stay in high sec space. 0.5 and above and stay in a npc corp and never get shot at by anything other than npcs with entails very little risk (and they will never kill your pod).

HOWEVER

The rewards in low sec are MUCH higher than in 0.5 and above. (Of course they are or else why would people even move to low sec when they know the risks) So you might spend a month to earn 200m in a 0.8 system doing level 4 missions but you could earn the same in 0.0 in a week. So yes you have the chance to lose your ship but you make it up that much quicker so it doesn't matter as much.

Also you will be surprised how quickly ou recover. My first cruiser loss, no wait my first battleship loss abou 120m when i only had a 50m bank balance made me want to cry. Especially because it was entirely my fault. Now it was awful and I felt rubbish but i learnt from it....

1) Dont fly what you cant afford.
2) Killing 1 cov ops ship does not warrant losing a bs to sentry guns :(
3) Sentry guns hurt when you're new.
4) Piracy is as dangerous as anti piracy.
5) If your in a good corp then things like this dont matter.

On point 5. Within 2 weeks my corp had helped me mine enough ore to build a new megathron and i was back on my feet again.

Hope that helps a bit. I could go on forever about eve, it seems to have taken over my life but i feel im rambling. Feel free to convo me in game though anyone looking for some advice. 'Bazan Kor'

Zeraph 07-10-2006 09:13 AM

Sounds too much like real life (not as in we all have space ships but as in risks). Obviously I cant say for sure without playing it but I can't imagine why anyone would pay $15ish a month to basically do what seems to amount to online work.

It really depends on what kind of gaming experience you are looking for. While I am no hardcore pvp'er, I can say that there's nothing like the rush you get from pvp combat in this game. Sure, getting your ship destroyed sucks but the bitter taste of defeat is what makes subsequent victories so sweet.

Like Bazan_Kor said, if you fly what you can afford to lose then getting your ship destroyed isn't such a big deal. Losing a ship isn't such a huge setback for me because it only represents a small percentage of my character's wealth.

Bazan_Kor 07-24-2006 09:28 AM

So what did everyone think of the alliance tournament? I caught the finals on eve-tv, the semi finals were excellent, too bad about the final but I can't blame either ASCN or BOB given what was at stake. Congrats to BOB and also to Mr Fix for taking the amount of smack he did after the fight :| which he certainly DIDNT deserve :(. 600 people online in ascn at the time of the battle and 3 volunteered so meh.

O well we (ascn) dont need another mothership anyway :p

gduventree 07-24-2006 01:14 PM

I have yet to watch any of the replays but reading the highlights has been pretty exciting.

So what was the full story there with the finals? Was Mr Fix convo spammed at the beginning of the tiebreaker round and if so, any ideas who was behind it?

Bazan_Kor 07-25-2006 12:58 AM

Yea as soon as the fight started he got convo spammed. Apparently so did the BOB pilot but mr fix seems to have come worse off. Im pretty sure ccp are investigating who was behind it but a 7day trial alt can convo spam someone so it might be difficult to get to who it actually was. Obviously alot of people had alot of isk riding on the outcome of the final so there was definately a motive. That aside....the BOB pilot did have the better setup so kudos to him. ASCNwere working on intelligence that a taranis would be used, if it had been the crow should have wiped the floor with it. This intel was accurate as BOB were choosing between a ranis and the crow but they went with the crow in the end leading to an easy match for their pilot.

An interceptor fight was a stupid way to do it anyways. Very anti-climatic, and yea the convo spam was lame as well.

EVE Online...
what can I say about this game... lets see...

I'll start off negatively -- the HUD can use some major overhauls. There's a lot of extra clicking that's entirely not required. The learning curve for the game is outstanding. I have been in the game for 8 months and I'm still learning useful stuff.

Positively... well, best game you'll ever play if you actually like to get into games. I've never seen a game with so much depth, character and possibility before. It's incredible in that respect, and very soon (for those of you who want to do it - it isn't rquired) they're updating the graphics to even more incredible. I have a lot of respect for CCP (the developers) they keep their content fresh and very interesting and update older content to give it life once again.

With that said, I'm Gallente and I whoop a lot of ass. I'm in a small sized corp that's overly efficient. Maybe 30 of us in total, about 5-10 of us on a night. We can get enough ore in one day to build a few battleships without issues.
I alone made 60mil ISK in the last two days of playing, plus 20mil in other forms. Soloing LVL 4's.

Alright enough bragging. I'm mostly in the Heimatar Region under the player name of Dreadwar if for whatever reason you're not in a corp and are looking but aren't completely new; hit me up. Otherwise, you can add me to your friends list I'll do my best to help whomever out.

rofgilead 08-17-2006 06:19 AM

Well, I tried out the game for two weeks. It is pretty fun, though actually very slow paced and slightly boring sometimes.

Like many MMORGs, it seems to be addictive to me - and I can spend a lot of my free time playing it.

I decided to quit however, going to try to develop my real world skills such as weight lifting and mandarin speaking instead of my game skills of gunnery and missile operation. : )

gduventree 08-21-2006 12:55 PM

EIB Scam

So did anyone here lose out on the EIB scam? The perp apparently made off with almost a trillion isk! To give some perspective that's about $100,000US if you could sell it at the going rate on ebay.

Gatorade Frost 08-21-2006 01:09 PM

I didn't lose any money, but that's pretty amazing if some guy got away with 1 trillion ISK.

Ustwo 08-29-2006 09:50 AM

The amazing thing is just how stupid people were to fall for it. EvE was made for scamming, and that was an obvious scam.

On ebay that would be worth about 100k USD, so I'm sure CCP is going to be checking very close to see if this guy tries to sell it. You could sell it legitamately with time cards but it would take an awfully long time.

I've left ASCN myself. Its a very nice carebear area, but I couldn't handle my asshole CEO anymore. I can make just about as much soloing level 4's and playing with some friends as I did in ASCN and my ultimate goal is joining BoB once my skills are up there.

seizei 09-01-2006 10:20 PM

I've been playing Eve since May.. started with a Gallente char and played for a month.. then got very busy and shelved it for a bit. Came back a month ago and started fresh with a Caldari... having a blast.

Making my first foray into 0.0 next week, with Agony Unleashed's pvp-basic course. 35 frigates and a warp bubble in Syndicate sounds fun....

Saving up for a cruiser atm..wanna get to at least 10mil before I go and spend all my ISK again (eidetic memory and logic hurt the wallet heh). Will go caracal, since my missile skills are decent, but seriously considering using another races ships, because caldari ships are butt ugly.

Name's Tai Otoshi.... still in the noobest corp of the noobcorps, State War Academy.

You veterans, come pod me someday and say hello!

Ustwo 10-24-2006 12:09 PM

Well I'm joining FIX now, may ASCN burn in BoB's dreads fire.

The guy running the war for ASCN is perhaps the biggest ahole I've run into in any online game, so thats saying a lot. Luckily he is also grossly incompetent as a CO, so you can expect some open space down that way soon.

gduventree 10-26-2006 04:23 PM

You're talking about John McCreedy or Cyvok? Yeah, I've read lot's of stuff about both of them and most of it not very flattering.

Personally, I hope ASCN bloodies BoB's nose a bit. Always rooting for the underdog, especially since BoB has such an arrogant forum presence.

McCreedy, I've never met anyone quite like him in a game. I want all of ASCN to burn just because I hate him

BoB has a bunch of forum whores to be sure, but I have some friends there and they back up their forum whoreness with results. The ASCN leadership is even more arrogant than BoB and you would see a lot more forum whoring from ASCN but they are not ALLOWED to post by alliance order.

Just a FYI you can expect ASCN stations to fall this weekend, I think two of them in paragon soul will be able to be taken. BoB really just wanted Paragon Soul and this might end there, but I'm hoping they stay pissed off enough to take it all or at least take O-o and OOY, which would mean no more EDF stations.

What a ridiculous statement to make. You fall out with one person who by my record seems extremely competent and respected within the alliance and you see that as reason enough for an empire built over months comprising 5000 people to just vanish?

Did you get kicked out for ratting/mining while EDF territory was under attack or something?

As for your other comments about PS falling over the loss of 2 stations, get a clue. Most of eve expected them to fall in the first week of fighting. Apart from anything We have 2 if not 3 more regions which are perfectly able to mount a counter offensive. By your logic the loss of the 1 Xetic station should have resulted in the loss of half of fountain, but wait...they took it back, why should gq2 be any different?

John is that you, you raving psychopath?

John has threatened people IN GAME with REAL LIFE threats including a friend of mine in game.

Suck it down, ASCN is lead by idiots, and I refuse to contribute to some idiot waving his epeen glory. And FYI I wasn't kicked out of EDF, I left like just about every other vet does. Its a game and John does his best to suck the fun out of it, and then explain why you are wrong to not like him, and how he knows best after all he has played 3 years and why don't you like him, can't you see he knows best?

Their main FC quit mid war to join MC, in large part because he couldn't deal with John anymore. He chased off his entire mining divsion, and was desperate enough to OPEN RECRUIT DURRING A WAR, and worse use those moronic statistics that made him such a joke on the forums.

John is a laughing stock of eve, anyone who respects him has either never worked with him directly or is 17 and thinks this is normal adult behavior in game.

As for your war effort, until ASCN can win a fleet battle, ONE fleet battle, you can't win as you will never be able to pop a POS. Hell despite John's promise ASCN never could get rid of the GQ POS, and now BoB has sovrenty over GQ and H8 so those systems are lost pretty much perminently, unless again, ASCN can beat a BoB fleet.

Sty 11-30-2006 05:28 AM

Ah fellow EVE players here, and even Ustwo.

Been playing since Jan 2005, had a lots of fun. Currently of course in 0.0 kicking some russian ass and trying to save our 10/10.

O'Doyle Rules!

Oh, wait, wrong thread.

EVE Rules!

I've been playing for over a year and a half now. It's the first online game i've ever played and I think I just may stop playing it when CCP stops supporting it. :)

I'm in the same corp as Chytrak.

In game name: Namo Iluvatar

xepherys 07-16-2008 06:30 PM

Anyone playing this anymore? Scottkuma brought it up the other day and I've reactivated my account. There've been a few expansions (free) since I played last. I feel lost all over again!

Cynthetiq 07-16-2008 06:32 PM

aww I tried the 21 day free steam....

it's beautiful, but I just coulnd't get into it figuring out how to get from place to place in the tutorial. I'll try again.

silent_jay 07-16-2008 06:51 PM

Got a buddy who plays EVE, well he used to be a buddy, he said he wanted to grow up and do more adult things, so now he spends I'd guess about 6-10 hours on EVE every day. Don't talk to him much anymore.

CyCo PL 07-17-2008 12:02 AM

I played for a couple months, unsubscribed about a month ago. It's a great game, with a lot of depth. I just didn't have any friends that played it, and it's kind of tough to be social in the game since there really aren't any gathering places like towns or instances or anything.

Catdaddy33 07-17-2008 03:52 AM

I tried the free trial too after I got pissed at Age of Conan, and while I appreciate the depth of the game starting out seems real tedious. Seemed like all I did was mine asteroids to sell to upgrade my ship which would have taken quite a while, of course I was probably doing something wrong.
When does the pace of the game pick up? Or is it all about the Corp that you join and the PvP systems?
