I used to do it in the dorms with my door open and people were amazed at the "white kid playing DDR!!" I was pretty good to in my day. I've fallen out lately because I've moved into an apartment and I'd piss off the nighbors downstairs since this is an old old building with wood floors jumping around on the mat.

DDR rocks. It's good cardio if nothing else.

I've got a Red Octane pad at home and have it for my PS2. It's a little hard on my right knee though (knee surgery) so I haven't done it in a while.

I want to get better though. I can only play on light difficulty. Normal just kicks my ass.

The games are actually pretty fun. The only bad part about DDR is the community that surrounds it. Gamers that play DDR are stuck-up, bragging immature brats. If you say someone is good at DDR in an arcade, they say "I know." If you ask if you can play at the arcade after they've did it for an hour, they look at you stupid and don't respond. If you say, "Hey, DDR, awesome!" to people playing in a dorm, they stare at you and don't say a word. It's really quite annoying, enough to make me lose interest in the game and have a dire hatred for anyone that does play the game.

This is 100% accurate. The only reason I don't play is because the crowd associated with it are usually stuckup bratassholes.

DDR is cool. I've tried it a few times and I thought it was pretty good. I'm not goin to make it a life long habit or anything, but it's cool

I bought the Mad Catz version for the Gamecube over Christmas and I'm having lots of fun with it. Less techno/house songs though and more pop songs (Jewel and Jessica Simpson?) but also some great old funk songs.

Well worth the $50 IMO.

There are a lot of kinds of people that play DDR. Cults of high school aged kids whose social power is quite largely determined by their current DDR ability relative to others in the group are not entirely uncommon. There are a lot of players that don't really belong to the 'community' though. I've done it for years and play on or near the most difficult songs in the game and my only regular companion has been my brother. Once you find an arcade machine in good working order, it's difficult to go back to a home pad. He and I went in on two of the very nice ones and in just a couple of months we had busted them from overuse.

And it's true that the one thing a DDR player hates more than anything else when he goes to the arcade is...another DDR player. They have a common interest and probably would hit it off at a party, but there's only one machine and there's two of them. Now each has to spend half their time waiting instead of playing. Bad. Still, it's no excuse not to be polite and players are most certainly obligated to alternate when new ones show up.

The early-teens types that gather around the machine aren't really that bad. They'll take their turn and then let you take your turn, even if some are quite visibly miffed that you've had the gall to come use the same public machine that they've been using. The worst are the extortionists. They're very uncommon but if you've played arcade DDR for 2+ years, you'll probably run into one or two. People who will claim that they've put a credit in earlier or something and demand to play on your dollar. The loss of 75 cents in any other context wouldn't bother me but I don't put up with crooks.

DDR rocks! My friends and I actually all became closer friends because of DDR back when we were sophomores/freshmen in the dorms. Now we're all off campus and we don't DDR as much, but we're still great friends!

The DDR scene here in vegas is pretty big, but the casinos dont really keep the machines in top form. It doesnt help that one of the last pure arcades in town (non casino owned) closed recently, and they had every DDR machine ever made in top condition. They only charged 50 cents a play and you got 5 songs per play. Since they closed a lot of kids are moving on to Pump it Up, or Para, or TechnoMotion, or IIDX..

I'm personally looking to either making a MAME cabinet for DDR, or just buying a machine this year. They arent that expensive, about 2 grand or so.

You hit it on the head right there, Las. That's partly why there's an odd DDR forum on the roller coaster forums I frequent - everyone on the boards there are already mature people, so any talk about DDR is also mature (and less 1337).

I <3 DDR. Being a poor college student, though, I haven't been able to go to the arcade much. I need to pick up MAX2 or Extreme for the PS2 sometime...

Funny though, a friend of mine said the other day, "Yeah, I figured you'd be an engineer or something like that since you're Asian... I bet you play DDR too!"

I can tell you it wasn't always like that. I was involved with the DDR "scene" way back in 1999/2000 when DDR was unheard in the US outside of San Francisco, Los Angeles, and somewhere in Illinois I think (where Konami did some initial testing). I remember making 1+ hour trips to play an illegally imported arcade cabinet in Milpitas (and then later in Sunnyvale, which was closer to me) because those were the only ones in the area at the time. Plus that's where all the members of the early DDRFreak people gathered, and they were always very inclusive. Sure there was some NorCal/SoCal rivalry, and if you knew how to do a routine, it gained you some popularity, but more or less, being able to play the game at a level greater than 3 or 4 feet was an icebreaker to start talking and make new friends. At least that was what my experience was.

But I agree with you that that's how it's become, which turns me off on playing anymore. Actually haven't played for years. Eh, oh well.

Played for some time at home for cardio until my pads broke. Now it's just one of many obscure skills that shows itself from time to time when the opportunity arises. (go to a party and there happens to be some people playing DDR.)

My wife got the game and a couple of pads for christmas. Its very fun and good excersise. Unfortunately, we live on the 3rd floor of an apartment complex, and we had too many complaints about the noise and the ceiling shaking. So we had to stop playing. She could probably play if she wanted to as I'm sure it wasn't her that was creating all of the noise.

I love DDR. My cousin has it and he even has a really nice dance pad for it. That's the reason why I don't own it though, because the crappy dance pads are, well, crappy, and the expensive ones are, well, expensive. Oh well.

DDR is fun. I don't care, I'll admit it - it is!

It's not even... dancing. Just hitting buttons w/ your feet in sync to the annoying ass dance music. God I hate that music..

Maybe a future version will come with a pattern analyzer, or some type of thing that lets you download song patterns to certain songs online. Download a Nine Inch Nails song.. then download the pattern for it, etc.

But yeah, I do it more for a workout instead of "just to play". I get so sweaty that I can't really play it as a party game unless I wanna be uncomfortably drenched in sweat for the remainder of the evening.

It's easy to pick up, too, if you're good w/ timing and pattern games. I was gettings As - Bs on Standard mode within a week, but tried to progress to Heavy mode and end up with mainly D averages. Can't get beyond that for the life of me. So.. I dunno, it seems like there needs to be an "inbetween" stage.

I'm thinking about getting the $300 cobalt flux pad (http://www.cobaltflux.com/). Indestructible fuckers. I can't stand the foam pads... or better yet, those thin flimsy ones. They drive me insane.. and I don't even play all that much.

I love playing DDR, I just haven't been able to play since we moved into a 2nd floor apartment (Unless our downstairs neighbors are being loud themselves).

There is actually a clone of DDR for Windows, Mac, and Linux called <a href="http://www.stepmania.com/stepmania/">Stepmania</a>. You can build your own patterns out of songs with it and everything, so it is kinda cool. I have some that I was working on using Mindless Self Indulgence songs.

I love DDR, I've been playing it for about the past two months. I brought my DDR game and mats back to college and everyone here has enjoyed playing it. It is also fun going undefeated here at the dorms because it seems as if no one else has ever seemed to try it.

The last time I played DDR was about 3 years ago, although I loved it back when I played. I was able to get up to trick... my brother could tackle some of the 9 and 10 foot songs. Anyways, in the arcade I there were about four kinds of DDR players. First were the really bitter asians who were amazingly good but treated everyone else like shit, then were the gamers and anime watchers who were pretty good, then were the kids who were supposed to be at school but were playing DDR instead, and finally the hockey players conditioning themselves for the winter. Except for the asians, everyone was pretty nice to each other and some of the stuff you guys are saying about "stuck up brats" and whatnot is pretty new to me.

Well, thats my story...

The DDR scene, from my experience, has grown alot. It's no longer an obscure Asians-only, Anime-enthusiast only kind of game. People of all types play it now, from young kids completely doing what kids do, to middle-aged guys getting a workout and having fun at the same time.

My friend turned me on to DDR maybe... 8 months ago, and he got a Cobalt Flux soon after he started. When he picks something up, he doesn't stop until he is the best. I gotta say, he is pretty damn good at DDR. He can AA Max300, which I never thought I'd see in person. After playing for a few months on his pad, I decided to splurge and buy myself a Cobalt Flux. I lost about 20lbs in a very short period, and felt great. But then I started going back to school and got a job, so I had very little free time. I really want to start it up again, I've got this great dance pad and I never play so I feel bad. When I was playing, I got up to be able to do 7-8 foot heavy songs before I stopped. I'll probably have to start at the bottom of the ladder again, but I'm pretty good with rhythms and beats so I'll be able to get back into it again quick hopefully.

Yeah I learned on Stepmania, got good at that, and then bought DDRMax 2 I believe for PS2, a friend has it now so I'm not exactly sure what mix. It does take some time getting used to the difference though.

I've never actually played a coin op ddr machine, but i play at flashflashrevolution.com all the time. It's free and addicting as hell. Malou, you said it's just too embarrasing to admit you play. The way I look at it is think of the incredible reflexes you need to be good at it. When i play at flashflashrevolution.com, I've gotten to the point where I am ranked 5000 or so out of 95000 people. People may think it's stupid but who gives a fuck what other people think. Also, my cousin, who goes to Valporaiso has a ton of friends who have 1000+ songs on their computer and 4 coin op machines in the lobby. He has 2 friends that have lost 50+ lbs on that game

Can't get beyond that for the life of me. So.. I dunno, it seems like there needs to be an "inbetween" stage. I'm thinking about getting the $300 cobalt flux pad (http://www.cobaltflux.com/). Indestructible fuckers. I can't stand the foam pads... or better yet, those thin flimsy ones. They drive me insane.. and I don't even play all that much. __________________ I love lamp.

killeena Crazy Location: Meechigan	I love playing DDR, I just haven't been able to play since we moved into a 2nd floor apartment (Unless our downstairs neighbors are being loud themselves). There is actually a clone of DDR for Windows, Mac, and Linux called <a href="http://www.stepmania.com/stepmania/">Stepmania</a>. You can build your own patterns out of songs with it and everything, so it is kinda cool. BigGov WoW or Class... Location: UWW	I love DDR, I've been playing it for about the past two months. I brought my DDR game and mats back to college and everyone here has enjoyed playing it. It is also fun going undefeated here at the dorms because it seems as if no one else has ever seemed to try it. __________________ One day an Englishman, a Scotsman, and an Irishman walked into a pub together. -=shikamaru=- Crazy	The last time I played DDR was about 3 years ago, although I loved it back when I played. I was able to get up to trick... my brother could tackle some of the 9 and 10 foot songs. Anyways, in the arcade I there were about four kinds of DDR players. First were the really bitter asians who were amazingly good but treated everyone else like shit, then were the gamers and anime watchers who were pretty good, then were the kids who were supposed to be at school but were playing DDR instead, and finally the hockey players conditioning themselves for the winter. Except for the asians, everyone was pretty nice to each other and some of the stuff you guys are saying about "stuck up brats" and whatnot is pretty new to me. Wingless Psycho Location: Metro Detroit, Mich, USA	The DDR scene, from my experience, has grown alot. It's no longer an obscure Asians-only, Anime-enthusiast only kind of game. People of all types play it now, from young kids completely doing what kids do, to middle-aged guys getting a workout and having fun at the same time. __________________ Tommy Nibs is a funny word. Sp0rAdiC Insane Location: VT	My friend turned me on to DDR maybe... 8 months ago, and he got a Cobalt Flux soon after he started. When he picks something up, he doesn't stop until he is the best. I gotta say, he is pretty damn good at DDR. He can AA Max300, which I never thought I'd see in person. After playing for a few months on his pad, I decided to splurge and buy myself a Cobalt Flux. I lost about 20lbs in a very short period, and felt great. But then I started going back to school and got a job, so I had very little free time. I really want to start it up again, I've got this great dance pad and I never play so I feel bad. When I was playing, I got up to be able to do 7-8 foot heavy songs before I stopped. I'll probably have to start at the bottom of the ladder again, but I'm pretty good with rhythms and beats so I'll be able to get back into it again quick hopefully.

Sp0rAdiC Insane Location: VT	Yeah I learned on Stepmania, got good at that, and then bought DDRMax 2 I believe for PS2, a friend has it now so I'm not exactly sure what mix. It does take some time getting used to the difference though.
