What's the deal with the SA80? (that is the medic gun, right?) I never see many people playing the medic, but I hear a lot of people are picking that gun to unlock.

I'm starting to get frustrated myself -- I saw the "don't install the patch!" messages before I saw the patch messages, so I went ahead and ignored it. I've had the game for like a week and a half, and I still can't get the damn thing online. I used "PBWEB" to update my PB files, but it still shows the list of servers, and if I click on any it goes to "connecting.." and then just drops back to server screen.. ARRRRGH.

It would seem being broke has saved me some anguish. Who'da thunk it? Looks like I'll wait for a patch that solves more and greater problems than it creates before purchasing.

As far as I know the L85 is the medic gun you can unlock.

I love it, fully auto and a decent sight.

The 1.02 patch is out to fix the memory leak. Server and client patches available. It doesn't say whether a full uninstall/reinstall is needed, I'm hoping to save time and installing it right on top of 1.01.

The patch notes and installer both read 1.01, so I guess they really rushed it.

I patched to 1.01, then it came out that DICE didn't know when the 1.02 patch would be released, so I reinstalled back to 1.00, and a few days later 1.02 came out.

I didn't have problems with 1.01, but CAL only endorsed 1.00 so I rolled back and many servers did as well. No issues with 1.02 yet, they just need to get a better server browser, the in game sucks...

The server browser now is SO much better. It used to be that I had to scroll.. wait 5 seconds.. scroll.. wait 5 seconds.. now it updates and scrolls like it should. Servers also aren't showing up as 0 ping anymore... yaaay!

My new ballmouse came in today. The added friction of ball mice make my Battlefield performance go up drastically over optical mice. The first match I played I got in first place as the medic with a score close to 100. Fear the ball mouse bitches. FEEAAARRR!!!

I love this game. I'm getting to be really good with the engineer kit and the commander. I unlocked the gas powered auto shotgun with my first gun reward. Nothing can beat it at medium to close range. :)

Doesn't the anti tank have a similar shotgun that's actually better? Im pretty sure it does carry more rounds at least.

Depends on what side you're on, I think. One of the anti-tank sides may have a shotty, but I know one side doesn't. Same with engineer..one side has the pump action shotgun (suck). The cool part is that you can use the unlocked guns no matter which side you're on.

Just checked, neither anti-tank spawn has an auto-shotgun. Neither engineer kit does either. I know that a week or so ago some weapons are accidently unlocked. That's probably what happened because I remember having the autoshotgun for free as well. It's fixed...the only way to get the autoshotgun is to unlock it.

The weapon-unlock was actually pretty neat, and I'm surprised how well EA phrased the messages to avoid what really happened -- their negligence. I didn't even get effected by it, but I still think it's damn cool. A group of white-hat hackers noticed that the authentication server for EA's rankings was REALLY insecure -- ranks could be manipulated or changed at will. They emailed the CEO, the Vice President, Tech Support, QA, the works.. and never got a response. So, they decided to take UID's 45,000,000 through 50,000,000 and unlock every weapon. EA sure took notice, and no one was harmed (they coulda deleted ranks, etc..) :) Neat, eh...

I'm gettin pretty good at BF2 lately, still need some more practice with the jets.. I come up on enemy helos too fast to get a lock and fire my missles.. I usually just kamikaze their ass..

I realize the main focus of this game is online multiplayer.

But for those of us who cannot play online multiplayer and do not know many people who have the game yet to play lan.... How good are the bots in single player.
Is it worth it to get the game knowing you cant play multiplayer for at least a year or so?

I wouldn't buy the game if you're not planning on playing multiplayer. The single player sucks, plain and simple.

The bots on 100% are pretty darn tough if you ask me.... IMO it is a great game, single player is a great way to test/tune your skills.

I killed my cable subscription over the summer so I could get more things done and then they release BF2! Those bastards!!! I have never enjoyed a first person shooter game more than I have with this one. I'm going to have the best hand-eye coordination in the land. By the way....anyone figure out the M95 sniper rifle? I can make some great long shots every now and then but I have a hard time with the short ones (less than 30m). Cross hairs will be dead center chest but I miss the dude and I get blown away. I looked even further into the shotgun ordeal. It was really bothering me. :) The MEC does get the Saiga 12k semi-auto shotgun as the engineer. The US always gets a pump action, as well as the Chinese. The unlockable engineer shotgun is a <I>fully automatic</I> shotgun, however, called the Jackhammer. You hold down the trigger and it goes until it's empty. :) The Saiga 12k is a really nice shotgun, but it's not fully automatic. It seems to have slightly better accuracy though.

I'm starting to use the Assault kit mainly now. On the close-quarters maps and if there is 64 players I switch to the Support kit though...nothing like 100 rounds without reloading. :) The grenade launchers are really, really powerful if you learn how to aim/line up the sights correctly.

I just love this game more every day. I went ahead and upgraded to an X800 XT so I could turn on more detail.
It's a fun enough game as it is, but now I'm obsessed with getting all the badges and ribbons on my way up the ranks. There's a great guide posted here : http://www.totalbf2.com/strategy/badges/ that describes what you need to do.
The "Airborne" ribbon was the most fun to get...just do 10 seconds in a parachute (take a plane waaaaay up high).
I'm glad EA added a bunch of little elements to make the game more fun and challenging.

Cool, thanks, that's an excellent guide. I upgraded to the X800 for BF2 as well. I think things like the badges to add an element to the game that was missing before. At the rate I'm going, I'll unlock my second weapon sometime in 2010, but even still I like the rank and award system.

Yea thats the only part of the medals and such that i don't like. I mean to get some of the medals you'd have to play 24 hours a day for about 3/4ths of a year. And its that way for a majority of the medals. 7000 hours of playing various command roles for a medal? Gimme a break.

I don't care at all about the medals and ribbons because some of them are absolutely ridiculous like ObieX said. What I do care about is my rank, and I'm sorta pissed about how hard it is to rank up unless you play all fucking day everyday. I'm rank 3 and have been since I played for like 10 hours. It took like 2 hours to get rank 1, 5 hours for rank 2, 10 hours for rank 3, and now at least 100 hours for rank 4. Why the huge jump? There's like 12 ranks. I understand the later ranks being hard to get, but why so hard in the beginning? I play the game a lot and I'm not enough halfway to rank 4. I rarely get outside of 1st, 2nd, or 3rd place, so it's not like I'm not getting points.

I just did some calculations. You'd have to play 6 hours a day for 3 years to get the 7000 hour medal. Uhh...bullshit. That's ridiculous. No wonder people are trying to alter their stats.

I just got this game on Saturday and I love it! I have a few questions though:

1. There were problems with the v1.01 patch, should I bother downloading the v1.02?
2. Can you only unlock weapons after playing on ranked servers?
3. Why does the sniper suck so much?
And 4. Am I the only person who plays as a medic?!! I haven't come across another one in about 10 hours of play, on different 5 servers! And everybody here seems to play assault or anti-tank

For a quick rundown:
1. Yes, 1.02 has no problems that I'm aware of.
2. Yes. Unlocking weapons depends on your player rank, which is based on your global score. Global scores are only recorded on ranked servers.
3. Don't know. Lag is a big problem but it also takes practice and knowing where to shoot.
4. I've seen servers where medics make up half the team, and others where there aren't any. It just depends on the server and who's playing. Although most of the time everyone balances out pretty evenly.

3. The sniper rifles take a HUGE amount of practice to learn. The Battlefield series is one of the only FPS that actually have bullet trajectory. Games like UT2k4, etc. are just aim and click -- if your sight is on the person, it hits them, so bullet trajectory isn't counted. The sniper rifles in BF2 have massive trajectory because you're usually firing from a long distance. The .50 caliber unlockable sniper rifles are much more powerful, but the trajectory is still the same.

4. On large maps, medics are really rare because most players die in vehicles (can't be resurrected if you die in a vehicle). If you play small, concentrated maps that don't have many vehicles you'll find more medics and more "medic moments" that happen.

Just got all my basic badges yesterday. That explosive ordinance one was a real pain in the ass. I didn't expect it to be harder than the knife one but it was heh.

Does anyone know what you need to be able to get the silver badges?Is something other than all the basic badges required?

I just played for awhile getting over 200 points and it didn't record any but 20 points, wtf? And yes it was ranked and yes I remember how many points I started with.

The points take a while to update sometimes. Mine took over an hour once.

Sometimes stuff just doesnt register. I had to redo my Knife badge cuz it said i got it, but later on it never came. I thought i had to wait, so i waited a few days and it still wasn't there. So i just redid it on a 64 player peninsula map. Good map to do pistol badge on too btw. Thats the only time i've had that happen, but it can.

With the singleplayer maps is there a way of changing the spawn time, amount of bots, etc?
Is there any rewards for the badges, other than your own personal satisfaction. Is it worth attempting them?

This site has a list of requirements for all badges. A few of them are easy, but some are just insane. Expert Aviator requires 1500 hours in an airplane.

I honestly don't care about the badges because no one else can see them, you gain nothing by completing them, and some are simply ridiculous to obtain (like the aviation badge that Scorpion mentioned). It's just personal satisfaction.

There are ways to have people see your awards and stats. Most are being systematically removed by EA and/or gamespy. For example http://www.bf2s.com/ was usable until yesterday :(

I'm not sure if there's an official way to let people view them, but if there isn't I'm sure they'll put one out eventually.

Just got Valorous Merit Ribbon tonight. That 55 team score was a pain in the ass to get.. ended the map w/ 60 team score from medic. :)

If I buy a second-hand copy from ebay, when I install it and try to go online, will it work? Or will it not let me play because of a duplicate CD-key?

I just got this game over the weekend and my biggest complaint is that it sits there with "Finding servers" or whatever the message is, for like 10 mins when playing multiplayer. I'm not going to wait 10 mins to play a damn game. I've tried prolly half a dozen times to play but get annoyed with waiting and end task the thing.

Is there a better way to get into a server?

Does anybody use gamespy arcade, or the in-game browser?

I've heard of some people with this problem. Mine does it too, but only for 5 seconds max. Have you upgraded to the latest patch? It's supposed to basically eliminate this problem specifically.

Hearing about all this badges and shit makes me pretty upset that I can't install it on my machine ATM. In fact, I have problems installing many EA games on my system. I put in the serial key and immediately get kicked to a "Incomplete installation error." I think it thinks I have copying software on here, but I've checked and cleaned my registry for anything that could possibly be misconstrued for copying software. No dice.

Nah, EA just knows you jumped ship and keeps a list of your kind on all its game CDs to prevent you installing their games. :lol:

I've run into this type of problem 2x recently. One was caused by some pc tweaking software I ran that disabled unneccessary services. It set my Windows Installer service to disabled. That took forever to figure out. The second problem I've run into is that my DVD drive was too old for the latest version of whatever copy protection software (secure rom?) is on the BF2 DVD. I had to install from my laptop's DVD over a network share and use an image file to play the game.

It's the best BF2 decision I ever made. In lieu of the vaporware "1.03", it has a buddy list and a favorites list and everything you could want. Additionally, you can set it up to autologin and even put your favorite servers on a serverside list so you can access them from anywhere. Playing BF2 to me has completely changed. I open BF2 Autoloader, my favorites (like 10 or so servers) load up in less than a second, I sort by ping (usually 50-80 lower than ingame)... double click the server.. and it loads Bf2 and logs me in.

So I checked my services and the Windows Installer was disabled. I started that up and tried to install...no dice. How do I figure out if my DVD drive is too old?

For my DVD drive (panansonic) I had to download some software from their website. 1 package was a WinXp driver update tool that came with a utility program that told me the firmware version of the drive. Then I was able to use a second package to update the firmware...and now the BF2 disk works in the drive. I did have to follow the instructions as I had to temporarily change the ATA channel speed temporarily to flash the firmware.

Sorry that's not much help, but if you have a Panasonic burner I can point you in the right direction.

Yea I was thinking the same thing. I'd be into it, but the cost of leasing servers from EA is pretty high. I usually just filter for Comcast servers as they tend to be low ping. I'd love to play with people who actually play as a team and use commo.

I may be willing to foot the whole bill although I may ask for donations from time to time. I seem to remember an ad for $9.99 a month for one. If that's the case no big deal. I'll do my homework on it when I get home.

For those who are interested http://www.bf2s.com/ now has (at the bototm of your player's lookup) a "time to next rank" area which show you how far to the next 3 ranks you have to go yet and even gives an estimated time (in both continuous and non-continuous gameplay) till you hit that rank. Pretty neat.. now if only looking at it didnt make me want to cry.

I'm going for Corporal (rank 4), but after that, I don't see myself ranking up again. I'll say one thing that is painfully obvious: those who already have 100,000 global points are stat exploiters, end of story. I have 8000 global points and I consider myself a really good player that plays pretty often. Even if you're an incredibly good player (me) that plays often (me), you shouldn't have more than 20,000 or 30,000 global points, even if you play nonstop. If you have more than 50k points, you're exploiting. So for all of you guys getting discouraged about your global score, don't worry about it...at least we're doing it the honorable way.

Furthermore, after Corporal, I don't really care about unlocking anymore guns. I'm after the G36C (already have the Jackhammer unlocked), but after that there's really no reason to want more guns. The assault replacement doesn't have a grenade launcher. The Sniper class sucks in general. The anti-tank kit comes with a semi auto shotgun, which one of the engineer classes gets standard issue. The medic kit gets a GREAT gun (the L85A1), but I don't play medic very often, so it matters none to me.

If you're going to call all those people stat-exploiters, you need to check out their stats a little. All of them have well over 600 hours played. I just ticked off the 100 hour mark, and i have a little over 12000 points. I score points about average(100/hr), but ive gone on a run where i score several hundred points in a night. Most of those people have more than 2000 matches played. Their stats are good, but there are exceptionally good people that play every game. A friend of mine, who plays no more than i do, but i play with him every night, has over 30,000 points in a little over a week of play time. I've never seen him exploit anything.

I'm not saying there arent stats exploiters out there, but once you get into the bf2 community, you'll realize that some people are just that good.

Well it looks like it's gonna be expensive for a BF2 server. a 24 player ranked server goes for about $98!! :(

I've noticed that I play MEC a lot...and I seem to lose a lot more when playing MEC. Does anyone else notice this?

That is an insane amount of playing. 2000 matches? 600 hours of playtime? Damn. That's incredible. I'll attribute their scores to their time played, but not necessary to being "that good." There's only so many opportunities for points in one round. :) If they're already up to 600 hours of playtime, I can certainly see having a score in the 50k range, but I'm still calling BS on the people with 150,000 points. I've read quite a few forums with EA representatives showing how they got their points and showing their global scores being reset because of them exploiting. I'd hate to think of someone's life that has 100,000 legit points... :thumbsup:

I checked the stats on one of the top scorers on the leaderboard. His stats are really, really fishy. His highest map score is in the 400 range...and it was Karkand. Else they have the tickets set incredibly high, or he's exploiting with people. His kill streak is also 50 on Karkand. 50 fucking people? Come on! You know how Karkand is...death is right around the corner. :) But 50?? That's just odd. Killing 50 people without dying is borderline impossible unless the other side was just standing there. Maybe he's playing with an incredible squad or something that he knows IRL. That just really irks me...I wonder what he does to get stats like that besides playing 24/7. I'm leaning towards the mass-Karkand map with insane tickets, since 90% (literally) of his playtime is at Karkand only.

A kill streak of 50 is a commander kill streak. Mine is 35 on karkand. On Karkand, with a good team, on a 64 player map, its incredibly easy to rack up 50 artillery kills. On a 32 player map, my average score on karkand is over 100. 64 would be even higher, but i hate playing 64 player. I'm sure they do things like armor whore, command a lot, heli-whore (nothing but flying and capping flags) but that doesnt really make it an exploit. Also, if you play at certain times of the day, (early morning US time) its easy to find a 64p map with like 10 people on it. You know how long it takes on some maps to work off 350 tickets? Enough to score a few hundred points for sure. I play with a group of about 20 people, former gaming clan, now just a casual clan, and several of us (not me) have high scores in the 300+ range.

The only exploit i would accuse most of them for is multi-people on 1 account. I think i would develop gangrene in my legs if i played for more than 6 hours a day.

I see the top user as 136,000? Is there somewhere else where people show as higher, into the 150k range?

Ya cap beat me to it, I've gotten upper 20s kill streaks, and I wasn't trying very hard. I could see a commander hiding out on a 64 map and getting that. Would still be hard, but possible.

Those people with such scores seriously need to get a life. This game is just not that indepth to play that much and since stats don't actually mean anything..

It's funny, lately I've actually just been playing single player. It can still be a challenge, just in a different way. The NPCs shooting or tactics (or something, not sure) isnt as good as a players but they make up for it in other ways. But the nice thing is you can do whatever you want, no one camps the heli or the tank, don't have to worry about idiots TKing, can play what you want, when you want without having to search for it, no lag, don't have to worry about being kicked at the last part of the game because some admin is a jerk, etc.

Yeah, they definitely need to revamp the tk system. I dont deserve -20 points for some idiot with a full DPV driving into an arty that i just threw down.

Can you play more than 8v8 in sp? I have pretty much only used SP to set up my PS2 controller to fly the jets, but i could see it being more fun if you could at least play 16v16.

Naw, only small maps, which sucks, but sometimes I feel like small maps anyway.

No more TK from commander arty, kick vote requirements lowered, new map (Wake from BF1942), AA missiles do more damage...track better, drivers can now see passenger names, cap points have actual names, server favorites (finally) added and stat comparisons now available in the BFHQ menu.

Supposedly also (can't find this confirmed) helo passengers no longer get cap points for hover caps...pilots only.

nope i got them. i dunno why it took so long tho.

the requirements that were changed is just the level of points you need. it only takes 8k now to get to gunnery sergeant, and 20k to get to the next one. they finally put in the 2 service ribbons for fareast/mideast.

Wahoo!! Gunnery Sergeant Lasereth!! That was a pleasant surprise. I went from Lance Corporal to Corporal, to Sergeant, to Staff Sergeant, and then to Gunnery Sergeant in the same map. :)

Damn. I logged in today and found out that my stats weren't updated yet. I now have THREE unlocks!! I chose the G36C as the second unlock...I don't know what I'm gonna choose as my third. I'm thinking either the G3 or L85A1. I'll miss the grenade launcher if I get the G3, but the damn thing has the power of a heavy machine gun, without the terrible accuracy. Only a 20 round clip though. I don't play medic often (even though I enjoy it) so I'm not sure if I should get the L85A1. The rest of the guns aren't for me. I already have the JackHammer (MK3A1) so I don't need another shotgun. Decisions, decisions.

I feel stupid. I unlocked the G3 just now and realized that I had 2 MORE unlocks on top of that one. Now I have the JackHammer, G36C, G3, L85A1, and DAO-12 unlocked. The rest are the guns I'd never get -- the PKM and the M95. I personally think the heavy assault (support) class is terrible...the accuracy is so bad on the PKM and M249 SAW that they're unusable, even at prone. I hate playing Sniper, so I'd never get the M95. They seriously need to give a little more accuracy to the PKM...that class is useless against most classes now. I played Heavy Assault with the PKM and M249 SAW in the Desert Combat mod for 1942, so it'd be really cool to go back to my "huge fucking gun" roots. :thumbsup:

Earlier in the thread it was mentioned that they lowered the requirements for each rank. In other words, if before, rank 4 took 10k points, and now rank 7 or 8 takes 10k points, you're gonna gain 4 ranks when you log in because you had 10k points to begin with. I simply jumped a few ranks because of the lowered requirements. I'm happy to have more unlocks, but I think they went a little overboard. The ranks are fine, but they should make it so that the unlocks aren't as easily attainable.

I agree, it would make for better team work to include some of the awards for promotion requirements, and change some of the awards so that they require 'team time' to be valid.

It sucks playing commander on a 32 player server and seeing only one 3 man team to command.


As for the weapon choices, I grabbed the m95. I often play a sniper and do as much spotting as the commander.

I try and find a tower or overlooking spot near their chopper pads. I can shoot the pilot with 2 hits with the m95. They weren't joking when they said it can go through cockpits. Tip: keep the fire button pressed for that rifle and the anti-tank missile to avoid reloading and not seeing where your shot is placed. I wasted so many shots without knowing that.

Many people don't know that if you keep the fire button held down for the anti-tank missile, you actually control where the rocket goes. I didn't figure that out for a while. :)

Wow. I started using the RPK-74 support machine gun and I think I like it. I've started getting into the habit of prone-firing, so now I don't have a hard time with accuracy. Just now I did a match on Karkand with the support gun and laid complete waste to the Americans. I think I might have broke my killing streak. :) I got 82 points with 39 kills on a single, 150 point Karkand map. It was great. My next unlock will definitely be the PKM (Desert Combat style :thumbsup: ).

The patch is good, except i feel a little cheated. Me and my squad worked really hard to get all our ribbons/medals/unlocks (the far east and mid east service ribbons were always there, you just needed 250 global hours total before they would unlock) and now every nub and their brother has all those ribbons. I guess most of the changes in gameplay is ok, the promotion requirements are a little soft though.

I normally join whichever has the lowest ping, but now that they have favorites I might stay on one or two servers.

Yea I do the same thing as Scorpion23. Sort by ping, sometimes for 64 players, sometimes for 32.

I'm usually on th EA Europe or Multiplay UK servers.

I wish I could find a server that plays medium or large sized Sharqi Peninsula and a small-sized Strike at Karkand on repeat. I found a few that play similar versions, but those exactly are my favorite levels in the game. I got on one server a few days ago and played Sharqi Peninsula for hours. That map is AWESOME on medium/large. It's true infantry combat. Levels like Dragon Valley on large are annoying because it's a vehicle-fest. If there's gonna be massive levels with vast distances to travel to get to each flag, then there should be enough vehicles to transport the entire damned team. I hate sitting around waiting on a vehicle, and that seems to happen a lot on the large, open maps.

The close-quarters maps like Sharqi and Karkand offer action non-stop, with the flags being so close to each other that you can easily run the distance. The one server I found that plays the maps I want is always full, not to mention half the slots are reserved for clan members so I can't play on it anyway. :(

I really think they stealth-nerfed the grenade launchers. I used to be insanely good with them before the patch and now my K : D ratio is going down. I even hit one guy in the CHEST with the M203 and it didn't kill him. Come on. They either nerfed the damage or nerfed the splash damage on them by around 25-50%. I'm starting to play medic a bit now as well. I got 28 revives on the last match I played. :) There should be a defibrillator ribbon...I killed 6 people in the same round with the shock paddles. I want a reward!! :) I imagine it would be rather embarassing to be killed by a medic running full steam ahead at you with shock paddles out. I got a few people while they were shooting at me. :)

I've started playing with a clan and I noticed one member had a really high score for how long he had been playing. I checked out his stats and he has like 2000 copter kills. Of course he's a chopper whore! He gets like 50-100 kills in the chopper on Sharqi and just plays it over and over to get more points. It's ridiculous. His kill streak is like 70 in the chopper.

I really like being the squad leader/medic combo. The medic gun is pretty damned good if you get used to single firing instead of going auto with it.

After 1.03 I've really been loving the unlocks. I was not impressed with the AT secondary when I got it for my first promotion, but now I've gotten a chance with the medic gun and the M95. Let me say, I fuckin' HATED sniping with the other two guns -- I felt so underpowered.

But damn, using the M95 on Wake or Karkand or Sharqi.. F - YES... :)

So you're one of the sniping bastards with the M95. ;) I seriously hate snipers. I do my best to dodge the fuckers but on Sharqi it's nearly impossible. I make it a point to fire loads of SRAW and Eryx rockets up at the crane to piss them off.

I also like the unlocks, but I can definitely do without them if I had to. The M16 and AK series are still my favorite guns. Give me an M16 and M203 and I can take on an army. :thumbsup:

So what cheeses me now is that I still can't install Battlefield to play it, but I gave Coppertop a copy and he installed it, but has yet to play it! :hmm: :|

The one complaint I have about the new patch is the whole people in vehicles need to get out to get credit for flag captures. Why? It is almost discouraging being in a vehicle. I know it is more difficult for the driver since they had to drive there, and everyone else just sat there but it isn't easy to get out of the apache or blackhawks and get credit and try to get back in.

It sounds like I have a lot of catching up to do. I haven't played in like two months (no internet at home). I can't wait though. Only a couple more days and I'll be playing again. I love this game.

That's exactly why they did that, copters were too powerful at capping AND defending/offending. Theyre like jets that can cap.
