i would strongly advise against bxf1 - he has no reason to care that we just took his rook - we can't achieve mate faster then he can in his 2 moves, so we won't be "forcing" him to do anything - his next move would still be white knight to g6.

i vote ne7.

grumpyolddude 12-20-2003 09:32 AM

There are 2 mate in 2 move dangers... Nf5 then Qg7... or Ng6 the Qh8. If we take the rook, we wait for his move. If Nf5, then we Qg4, if Ng6, then we move our pawn from f6 to f5 defending h8 with our queen.

Ne7 is not a bad move, just less aggressive than I would play.

Kadath 12-21-2003 08:53 AM

I haven't been in on this game in quite a while, but I also vote Ne7. However, I frankly don't see how eye moving Ng6 would be mate in two. Our response to that would be to have the pawn take the knight, which would not leave us well off, but certainly would not mate. So we have to defend against Nf5.

Vacation till the 2nd! (Maybe I'll get bored out here in Seattle and rokk my next amazing move...) Happy Holidays!

wordssmith22 01-14-2004 10:06 PM

great idea, reminds me a lot of russia vs the rest of the world for some reason.

btw, i agree with grumpy's move. i don't see any problem with taking the rook. the queen and knight aren't in any position to make an unstoppable or even materially damaging threat. but that might just be what he wants us to think....

kudos to eyeronic for setting this up

wordssmith22 01-14-2004 10:16 PM

actually, does he have a perpetual check up his sleeve?

bxf1 ng6
fxg6 qxg6+
kh8 qh6...

That thought occurred to me, too. I doubt, however, that our esteemed opponent would bail out with that at this late stage. He's been the consumate gamesman to this point, and I believe he would like to see this played to a more satisfying conclusion than that.

wordssmith22 01-15-2004 09:36 PM

do or die eh? but still, a draw over some 10+ people would suit me fine.

I would have gone for the perpetual check, but hell, let's keep it interesting. Sorry to make you guys wait a few months... :hmm:

Kadath 05-27-2004 08:20 PM

Well as I see it Qg4 is the only way to avoid an immediate mate. Then we can either trade queens or our bishop for the knight.

Silvy 05-27-2004 11:27 PM

I agree Qg4

And welcome back Eyeronic!

mgcloud 05-28-2004 10:05 PM

Yep - Qg4

This is a really cool idea! :)

grumpyolddude 05-29-2004 07:57 AM

Welcome back Eye! Nice move!

I agree with Qg4

H12 05-31-2004 08:20 PM

Qg4, easily. Nothing else...just Qg4.

eyeronic 09-11-2004 06:34 PM

Do you guys accept a draw? I offer one!

Kadath 09-12-2004 02:07 PM

I see the strategy. Wait 3 months, then offer a draw! :)

firebirdta 09-13-2004 06:19 PM

This is a great idea. I wish I had seen it earlier. Eye, if you don't have the time or don't wish to continue, I will gladly take over for you. Otherwise, let's continue this great game.

eyeronic 09-13-2004 06:21 PM

Fact is. This is the most labor intensive thing I do on the TFP. You guys all gave me a run for my money, but I hardly have the time to keep up on a daily basis. I wish I'd forced the draw before, but it still looks drawish to me. What do you say folks?

hulk 09-14-2004 04:38 AM

I'm all for it =) I'm still up for that chess tourney, if anyone wants to resurrect it =)
