Good and Bad Star Wars Games.

So I've been playing Knights of the Old Republic 2 for the past couple of nights. Aggressively. It's a fun game. Sucks me in just like the first one did. BUT, not every Star Wars game is so good. When it comes to Star Wars games, they're hit or miss, like Star Trek movies.

So I give you a list of the good Star Wars games (in no particular order):
X-Wing (PC)
Tie Fighter (PC)
X-Wing vs Tie Fighter (PC)
X-Wing Alliance (PC)
KOTOR 1 and 2 (XBOX, PC)
Star Wars (ARCADE)
The Return of the Jedi (ARCADE)
Dark Forces
Dark Forces 2 : Jedi Knight (is this the same as Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy?)
Jedi Knight 2 : Jedi Outcast (aka Dark Forces 3? )
Pod Racer (N64)

Bad Star Wars games? (up for debate):
Masters of Teras Kasi (PS)
Bounty Hunter (ALL CURRENT)
Obi-wan (XBOX)

But I haven't touched upon the MMORPG, the SNES games, or the rest of the Star Wars universe. Anyone have any comments? Am I just a crackhead with my choices? I want to hear some discussion before Lucas runs his franchise into the ground completely. :D

kiwiman 01-06-2005 02:58 AM

What about that Battlegrounds game that used the Age of Empires engine? It wasn't exactly terrible..

Also, Rebel Assault 2 deserves to be in the second list.

aphex140 01-06-2005 04:17 AM

star wars battle front and clone wars on the XBOX and rogue squadren on the Cube are qwality

too many related star war tie ins ( jedi starfighter XBOX {?}) absolute pants both in terms of game play and storyline

Kadath 01-06-2005 05:57 AM

kiwiman: SW Galactic Battlegrounds was decent RTS fun. I'd put it on the good side.

To add to the good list:
Rogue Leader.

The bad list:
Rebel Strike(except for the multi-player Rogue Leader, that was gold.)
Shadows of the Empire
Rebellion
Pretty much all the movie titled games, although I have a soft spot in my heart for Super SW, ESB and RoTJ on the Super Nintendo even though they sucked.
Yoda Stories
Jedi Power Battles
BATTLEFRONT(god what disappointing crap)

Oof. LucasArts is definitely more miss than hit, although I agree with FngKestrel about the good ones, so maybe it's fifty-fifty.

aphex140 01-06-2005 07:44 AM

no way what was up with battlefront was qwality the sound samples etc

what did you not get on with ?

Coppertop 01-06-2005 11:47 AM

Oh yeah baby!

http://images.webmagic.com/klov.com/...sStar_Wars.jpg

It definitely belongs on the first list.

Bobaphat 01-06-2005 12:09 PM

I really enjoyed bounty hunter... I've only played Battlefront for a couple of times so far, but I am not really sure how to feel about it yet

t3m3st 01-06-2005 12:32 PM

I hated Rouge Squadron 3. It was a little of the old games combined with a whole lot of Robotron style play.

ggadgit 01-06-2005 12:50 PM

x-wing alliance is good and to make it better look at.

Dude, a sit down version of Star Wars arcade game! I used to play it standing up and would be twitching so much at the end that my knees would shake.

And X-Wing Alliance remade? cool! Hopefully they'll have 2 people in the same ship this time around!

I went to the CA Extreme Classic Gaming Expo last year and found Empire Strikes Back in the arcade, done in the same style of the vector graphics as Star Wars. Mixed feelings. It was a little too convoluted to pick up easily.

jvwgtr 01-06-2005 01:16 PM

I keep wanting to like Battlefront, but I get tired of it pretty fast and switch over to one of the Battlefield games instead. I don't know what it is that makes it so frustrating.

Ace_O_Spades 01-06-2005 01:47 PM

Aww... I actually LIKED Rebellion a lot... It was a lot of fun...

All my friends liked it too... Guess we're in the small minority.

glytch 01-06-2005 01:49 PM

I love just about every Star Wars game ever made. That being said, how could Super Bombad Racing not have been mentioned on the "bad" list yet? Bombad Racing? What the heck is that?

Coppertop 01-06-2005 02:00 PM

I didn't like Rebellion. In fact, I gave it away. I did, however, enjoy playing The Phantom Menace. Go figure.

Derwood 01-06-2005 02:00 PM

Clone Wars on Xbox was a pile of crap. Terrible framerate for a machine with such good graphics

Yeah, I loved hearing the little kid say "Nice laser sword mister" when I drew my lightsaber to kill him. Hehe, oops.

hahaha yeah... too bad it took till KOTOR till stuff like this could be properly implemented ;)

japhyryder 01-06-2005 02:26 PM

Most of the problems with Starwars games isn't the concept of the game it is the EXTREMELY poor quality of the game

Never played it, so I didn't feel qualified to condemn it. But it did look pretty bad.

Yeah, the flight sims were done by Totally Games!, who did a good job. Bioware and Obsidian do a good treatment as well. Not sure who developed those other games. Maybe some mini developer just grateful to have the license.

How can we speak the same language and yet not understand each other? Why can't the English teach their children how to speak?

Battlefront was clumsy, the AI was abysmal, the weapons were dull, the whole thing just made me not want to play. They did fix the connection client to some degree, but it's still not fun. Not quality.

Kodega 01-06-2005 09:50 PM

What pisses me off is Lucas Arts canceling games like Sam and Max 2 and Full Throttle 2 to pump out more crappy Star Wars games.

However, back on topic Star Wars: Demolition for PS1 was horrible Twisted Metal clone.

Edit: Softened some words.

Willravel 01-06-2005 10:27 PM

I really need help. I started playing StarWars: Battlefront like 6 or 7 weeks ago. Since then I''ve only stopped for food, bathroom, sex, and work.

Battlefront (which is the best mod of Battlefield) is by far my favorite StarWars Game. Now if only Blizzard can come up with a Starcraft type strat verion with StarWars.

TheFu 01-06-2005 10:33 PM

I like Battlefront on Xbox live. The campaign mode sucks in my opinion. There just isn't enough there. I finished it in a day and I wanted my money back until I played it on Live.

pinoychink790 01-06-2005 10:36 PM

yeah, i agree. the campaign didn't last that long. but the live makes up for it

aberkok 01-06-2005 10:42 PM

Ah...memories of X-Wing. I'm pretty sure that's the game that caused me to need glasses.

pinoychink790 01-06-2005 10:43 PM

what's wrong with x-wing???

t3m3st 01-06-2005 11:29 PM

What was that one with the pit droids? You had to make stuff or something... I don't remember. That was pretty lame. Had it on some demo disc...

pinoychink790 01-06-2005 11:31 PM

i don't know about that one. it doesn't sound too familiar with me. have you tried searching the web?

Xbox live makes this TheFu and pinoychink790 have captured the essence palying against friends make the game.

I agree the campaign is too short bit XBox live makes it work

omega2K4 01-07-2005 12:40 PM

Star Wars Arcade for the Sega 32X was fucking awesome.

Wow. I thought I was the only person who had that.

MPower 01-07-2005 02:05 PM

All the Xwing and tie games for pc rocked. Turning on the lightsaber dismemberment on the jedi knight series quadrupled the fun. And the stormtrooper pieces. Battlefield was kinda crappy. The maps were so small the fighters were useless. Course I play flight sims so flying for 10min before even engaging the enemy makes me biased about the cramped maps.

Haha. The 32X kicked ass, even though it had only a few decent games. Mortal Kombat II on the 32X was the best version of MK to date, even outclassing the arcade games.

pinoychink790 01-07-2005 08:37 PM

yeah the 32x was cool

thriolith 01-12-2005 03:55 PM

KOTOR was good, Jedi Academy wasn't too bad. The battlegrounds game off the AoE engine was fun, it was different. And Battle Front was fun for a bit, but is not nearly as good as a lot of the other multiplayer shooters.

I loved the Jedi Knight Series, pod racer was interesting, played it a few times at a friends house. Haven't really played many of the others, I remember playing a few tie fighter games and such, but those sort of sims never really grabbed me.

Suave 01-12-2005 07:30 PM

I also heartily enjoyed the X-Wing and Tie Fighter series. Dark Forces and Jedi Knight were good as well. The SNES games were incredibly addictive, and I even enjoyed Rebellion (God knows why). Also liked Shadows of the Empire and Rogue Squadron for N64.
