RPG
Looking for a good RPG for either PS2 or PC.
I am NOT a fan of Final fantasy either, so please don't suggest that. MMORPG's are OK... but I'd like to hear about some non pay-to-play games as well. |
Have you tried Star Wars: Knights of the old Republic or Neverwinter Nights? KOTOR is a really good RPG set in the SW universe, and NN is more like a D&D game, but HUGE. Oh, and they're both for the PC.
Those will hold you over for some time. :) ~Bob |
I've been playin Shadow Hearts: Covenant on PS2. I think it's awesome. It looks a lot like Final Fantasy X, but it's mechanics are more simple and it's battle system has far more depth (not complicated depth, but good, interesting depth). It's basically what FFX should have been (technical-wise).

Morrowind's taken over my life. So has Neverwinter Nights. I haven't played anything lately for the PS2 that wasn't Final Fantasy so I'm afraid I can't help you on that one.

Hmm, for the PC you could try Baldur's Gate. It's a few years old, so chances are good that you can find it for $20 USD or less. It's a pretty good interpretation of D&D (as far as I know).
Star Ocean 2 is a pretty good RPG. It's for the PSX, but still. I think I got it for $15 at a Newbury Comic last year. Try these lists. Although the reviews probably aren't helpful, it'll give you an idea of what's out there. PC RPGs PS2 RPGs |
For PC check out the following.
Planescape: Torment Baldur's Gate Baldur's Gate: Tales of the Sword Coast (expansion pack) Baldur's Gate II: Shadows of Amn Baldur's Gate II: Throne of Bhaal (expansion pack) Freedom Force (heh, this a good game but i'm not sure if it's really considered an RPG  ) Icewind Dale - dugeon crawler Icewind Dale: Heart of Winter (expansion pack) - dugeon crawler Icewind Dale II - dugeon crawler Neverwinter Nights Neverwinter Nights: Hordes of the Underdark (expansion pack) Neverwinter Nights: Shadows of Undrentide (expansion pack) The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind The Elder Scrolls III: Bloodmoon (expansion pack) The Elder Scrolls III: Tribunal (expansion pack) As for the ps2 i can name a few good RPGs. The first 3 are tactical types and the last two are more dugeon crawler RPGs. La Pucelle: Tactics Disgaea Growlanser Generations (This is basicly Growlanser II and III in one package.) X-Men Legends Summoner 2 Lastly all the games I mentioned but X-Men Legends, Summoner II, The Elder Scrolls and Neverwinter Nights games have a 2D art style if that matters to you. |
Gladius is a good one on the PS2, if you can find it.For PC, Baldurs Gate. Especially II but if you can get the whole series, that's better.
|
Morrowind for the pc ( also available for xbox, not useful for you ) blows away all rpg's. this will/can keep you busy for months as the world is truely massive.
Knights of the Old Republic(pc); also is very good. excellent plot. you can play a good or a bad guy and do the whole game. |
PC: Fallout 1 & 2, Planescape, Arx Fatalis, Knights of the Old Republic
I would avoid the other D&D games and Morrowind unless you like boring and generic rpgs. PS2: Disgaea, Suikoden 1,2, and 3, Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne |
vampire: the masquerade: bloodlines is a nice rpg/fps hybrid....I've been very addicted to it most of break....
|
Prohecy knows what it's about. Specifically, Black Isle's D&D games.
Baldur's Gate II: Shadows of Amn and its expansion Throne of Bhaal was, beyond a doubt, the very best game I have ever played. Period. No other game can even hold a candle to its fantastic plot, deep character development, and flexible combat, not to mention excellent music and voice-acting. Get it! |
For PC: The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind (with the Tribunal and Bloodmoon expansion packs), Vampire - The Masquerade - Bloodlines (FPS/RPG hybrid), Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, Neverwinter Nights, Dungeon Siege, and that's all I can think of.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned System Shock. I've only played System Shock 2, but it was easily one of the best games I have ever played.
And here's a second vote for Fallout. You can get 1 and 2 for $5 now. Can't beat it. |

System Shock 1 and 2 (1 is really old, 2 relatively old)
Fallout 1 and 2 (play them in order, you might as well! I liked F1's plot better, but F2 is less buggy and better written) both relatively old Star Control 2 (you can download legal free versions of this. Search for "The Ur-Quan Masters". It is a very different kind of RPG. Ancient game -- like 386 ancient) I've heard good things about "Chrono Trigger". Is it a PC game? Deus Ex (less old) None of these are new and shiny. |

I'd suggest Morrowind & expansions, NWN & Expansions, and KOTOR |
Temple of Elemental Evil is pretty good. Single player only though.
|
Try Divine Divinity and Beyond Divinity, both for PC. Good RPG and can keep you busy for a long time.
