I am going to have to chime in with Halo as well. Granted I played very little of the single player game, and I've heard that it's a good story, but I could never get into multiplayer and the 2 or 3 hours I played single player didn't really make me want to play much more.

The top of my list would have to be Halo and the GTA series. I haven't played Halo 2 yet, so I can't comment, but I just don't get the interest in these games. I'll try to be brief.

Halo:
It looks pretty, I'll give it that, and the concept is delightfully cool, though doesn't play out quite as well as I would've liked. But the gameplay was utterly blah. I hated going backwards and forwards through so many of the levels. I HATED the Flood. WORST ENEMIES EVER. Especially in the harder difficulty levels, they just were a huge pain in the ass and not at all fun or interesting to fight. I've played through Half Life three or four times and love it every time. Same with Deus Ex and Max Payne. There are just moments in those games that put a huge smile on my face. I never get that with Halo. I understand that much of its draw was multiplayer, but I had a lot more fun in UT and Return to Castle Wolfenstein. I guess (as someone else said) I'm just a PC gamer when it comes to FPS. The console FPS games I play just don't do it for me. I'll drive or sport or RPG, but give me a mouse and a keyboard for FPS and I'll be a much happier person.

GTA:
What the fuck is it with these games? I've played all of them and spent hours watching other people play them. I DON'T GET IT! Sure, you can drive around in a huge, immersive world and do all kinds of random shit, but I just cannot see what people find so enjoyable about them. I have a friend who kills basically everyone he can get away with every time. He'll go into a store, kill everyone, go outside, come back in, kill everyone again. He will repeat this for hours at a time, which a shit-eating grin plastered across his face the whole time. How is that fun? From the other people I've seen play, this seems to be pretty typical behavior. Just mind blowing. I can't really give a coherent justification for why I don't really like these games, they just rub me the wrong way.

On a final FF related note, I quite enjoyed 9, X and X-2 (though I'm not finished with X-2 quite yet), but damn do they need to cut the bullshit with getting people's "last weapons." Beating the games, especially the optional side dungeons, gets to be hard as hell if you don't have the 9999 damage break to 99999, but getting the items to do that is awful. The hours I spent dodging lightning bolts, digging with chocabos, dodging birds and getting balloons while riding chocabos are ones I can never have back. In fact, that's really what's stopping me from playing FFX again. I'd love to do it, but I'd want to have those items, and lacking a console from which I can just cheat them in, no way I'll be doing that. Tedium is BAD and should not be a deliberate part of game design.

AMEN!!! I don't know one person who doesn't use cheat codes on that piece of crap. I've really given each of the GTA games a fair shot. I can't stand them. Redundant, absurd, unnecessary violence (if I'm going to kill someone in a game, I have to have a good reason), these games are the stuff of ignorance and needlessness.

Me too i would have to go with GTA. What is the goal of this game anyway? Sure you can walk around and kill everyone but...what's the point of it? If you like that kind of thing, you should play games like morrowind. At least in that game you can discover a lot of fun thing while running around.

I most also say that i find price of percia 1 & 2 pretty overrated. I played about 4 hours of the first and 3 of the second and i grew tired of repeating the same exact moves. and what is so special about the combat system. It'S nothing new. And what is the thrill of repeating the same thing 4-5 times in a row because you have to do acrobatic jumps and then after kill a lot of monster before you can save. I dont like it when the only thing that i can think of is:I am going to get to a save point soon? This kind of thing doesnt make me appreciate a game. All the stress made me want to rush to the next save point, without enjoying the game

There is also Ghost reccon that i find verry borring. I got it with Splinter cells 2 when i bought xbox live. I dont get this game.i mean i like rainbow six and that kind of game but this game is just not interresting. It is slow, it's hard to see where the ennemies are and to what i heard there is like 5 or 6 missions. If thats is true, this REALLY SUCK. Why would someone what to buy a game whre there is only 5 or 6 missions. I like it when a game is long, thats one of the criteria when i buy a game. I bought Kotor 1 (40 hours), kotor 2 (45 hours), Morrowind (+/- 90 hours done in 1 year)

So for me my overrated list is:
1)Gta
2)Prince of percia
3) Ghost recon

100% correct. People that play Halo for the single player game are retarded. Halo is fun with 4 people. However, the more people you have and the more skilled the players the more fun it is. We used to load up 16 people using system links. I haven't played much of Halo 2 yet, but it really does not have to be that much better than Halo to be a great game.

Do remember that many people that read this board love Everquest, Everquest 2, and World of Warcraft. Halo in MP isn't any more fun than most other MP-based games. The reason it took off was because it was the only game of it's style on the X-Box, selling on that merit and not much more. When compared to PC shooters, it's a pretty big case of 'seen it all before'.

Agreed with Myst being extremely overrated, not to mention the fact that in the time it takes to beat that game a person could have read the entire dictionary. In defense of Halo 2 though, the Xbox live features are outstanding. If you dont have Live, welp sorry - its definitely the feature that defines that game.

Just because Some of us may play World of Warcraft or another MMORPG (which I think ARE fun) doesn't mean we do it for 20hours straight. =P WoW especially is one of the exceptions, where you dont have to play that long to progress. (I work 9-5 and usually get home anywhere between 8-11 and I am moving along fine)

Btw Halo/Halo 2 are definitely great games. It seems like some people dont give them enough of a chance... and if you are complaining about the controls I dont think you've played it enough. I love FPS's on PC's as well, but you feel so much more connected with whats going on when the controls seem like normal body functions. Get headshots with a sensitivity of 8 or 9 in halo 1 (would not recommend that in halo 2) and then say its a sucky game. playing single player for 3 hours is not going to let you really experience Halo. (at least play co-op if not Online). You should play games through and experience all aspects before you judge it too harshly . Btw this is not a flame in any way.. its just that I really want to hear what you guys and gals think are the most over-rated games out there... but you need to PLAY the game before I take stock in your opinion about it.

thanks

oh, and the over-rated thing... I'll agree with FF7

This has got to be one of the most incorrect statements I've read in a long time. This isn't the shacknews forum. First of all, I don't think there are that many EQ/EQ2 fans on the board or if there are, they aren't that active about posting about how great those products are.

Secondly, this isn't some fan boy site where people make outrageous statements with no backing. TFP is about discussion and if you read the threads you will find that people disagree/agree/debate whatever. People here have opinions and like to express them. If you find some inplausible reason why you can't take our word for something, well, you are missing out.

Finally MANY people love WoW, I think Gamespot named it game of the year. I've played with the TFP folks/been in their guild and to say we were "exp grinding groups for 20 hours straight" or "play 100+ hours a week" is just plain wrong again. It was about having fun, helping each other out and kicking some ass in PvP.

Wow, didn't know that many people hated Halo 1/2. I, like a lot of others, love the game and can't get enough of it. I'll say this, the single player sucks nuts, is reptitive, easy, and not fun. I haven't had so much fun playing multiplayer in anything though.

While I love Final Fantasy VII, I think it is pretty GD overrated. I think old school RPGers (not that I am one) hated it because its switch to the whole modern motif, which I didn't mind personally. Materia system was decent. Let's be honest, the plot didn't fucking make one bit of sense. Who the fuck is Cloud, really? Oh well. Characters could be made friggin uber gods with stat maxing and when all was said and done, the best limit breaks (aka Cloud Yuffie Cid) made up the best party. It did do a lot for the game genre, I will agree, but in my mind, FFVI/III, Chrono Trigger, and made even FFIX make up my favorite RPGs.

These threads are pretty funny, to say the least, but kind of annoying at the same time

I think a lot of people misunderstand what "overrated" means.

It's just a WEE bit unusual to see Final Fantasy 7, Metroid Prime, and GTA (to name a few) listed as "overrated" games. Overrated how? These are games that have (or will) stand the test of time that people will think back and say, "goddamn, that was a GREAT game.."

These games excel in every aspect of entertainment - story itself, sound, gameplay, graphics (for the time), and overall fun. Just because it's not your cup of tea doesn't mean it's overrated.

Metroid Prime... I mean, that's easily one of the best games of all time, right up there with Ocarina of Time, GTA, Final Fantasy 4, FF7, etc. It doesn't offer anything too terribly new in terms of graphics or innovation, but it's a Metroid game - it focuses on exploration, item finding, backtracking, boss battles, etc... It meets AND beats all previous titles, hands down. It might not seem that way because the nostalgia of something like Super Metroid might be lingering, but in today's gaming scene, it's damn good.

That being said, there are some games where people kinda overlooked the fact that it had been done before. Halo is one of them. It's an okay game and all, it's not bad or anything, but it really isn't any different from any other FPS at ALL. I really don't get why people flock to this game. The story is mediocre and... it's an FPS. FPS games got old years ago. It's as if people who played Halo NEVER played Quake 3, Unreal Tournament, or Half Life, which is kind of odd... I cringe whenever another FPS is released. The first thing I wonder is, "What's new in this game that should make me want to play it?" I wouldn't have touched Doom 3 if it wasn't for the fact it was scary as shit. Quake 4? Unless it offers something worthwhile and revolutionary, I probably won't bat an eye at it. Same with Halo when it came out. No one can seem to explain exactly why this game is different aside from "well my friend likes it, so I like it."

GTA wasnt over rated. It had a huge city, the ability to jack any car (boar and plane) and kill any thing. When it first came out in 1997, this kind of freedoma and interactivity was unheard of at that time. The basic formula hasnt changed much for all these years, but neither has any other genre. When you look at fps, it all boils down to point and shoot. When you look at rpg (jap), it all boils down to fighting repetive battles and saving the world. Jaking cars and running people over is fun, and that s what the GTA series is all about.
