The MMORPG Kingdom.
As a 3 year + Veteran of Everquest I found myself asking "Why the fuck am I spending 12+ hours to gain a level?"....
So naturally I wanted to seek out an alternative. ( I HATE relying on other people for shit, and I have an attention span of maybe 15 seconds.I wanna blow shit up,use a big axe and fucking rule the world. ) So besides the leveling, the patches ( Yay fear nerf in PoJ ) The lazy ass programming fixes. Etc. First things first, I tried DAoC...for about 10 minutes.UO...moving on. So here we have ShadowBane, and Worlds of Warcraft.I liked SB just because you level so damn fast, there are NPC's who sell armor that is usefull and not-overpriced.Maybe it was just the new game smell talking, but I think SB would be a nice substitue for a while.... Next we have Worlds of Warcraft...this game will be intresting.Very promising so far.Could use maybe some more races/classes. So I ask.( ignoring my EQ rant :P ) Do you think any games will topple the MMORPG giant known as Everquest? |

World of warcraft and Starwars Possibly.
I don't know if they will ever be as big because MMOs are slowly attracting less and less people. The only reason EQ still has 400,000 people is because they all don't want to just quit and give up all they have played for. I don't think any new MMORPG will have the same kind of success. I kind of think that MMORPGS are going to go out of style for a while once WOW and SWG have been on the shelf for a few years. Final Fantasy 11 will also have a big following, although I refuse to play it :/ I hope that made a little sense, I'm sleepy

I have to be honest i'm not really into SWG. I like the movies and some of the lore, but a game around it doesn't interest me.
EVE Online has some potential, still some bugs things i'd fix in the beta version but it could be good. Especially at first the whole idea of a space MMORPG didn' t interest me. I tried DAOC for about 3 months and quit, played EQ for 2.5 years before that. I am looking forward to EQII but that probably won't be until Christmas or first quarter of next year realistically. I still love a good MUD any day though... |

If you mean the new games, you never know, SWG galaxies is looking to draw a crowd, same with WoW.
Never forget Ultima Online though, the one that started it all. I personally think that Ultima is just much more of a seperate community, which is why I love it. EQ is just a game everyone knows of, even if you don't play it. I think if Ultima got even more popular/commercial, that would be the only one to topple (if it hasn't already) the commercial giant known as Everquest.

As to what will be the first MMORPG to topple EQ in terms of sheer player-base number? Right now, I believe nothing will. That is only mentioning the other minor MMORPGS and the three primary contenders: SB, WoW and SW:G SB is already out, did not exactly create a huge impact into the MMORPG world. Its not like 100K people moved to on out of one MMORPG to play SB. SW:G has the best possibility, only because of fanbois and because its... well... Star Wars. AO turned out, at start, to be a -really- bad product. Those that flocked to it deserved to get ripped off. I -hope-, must be the love for EQ, that SW:G is an incomplete product at start as well, so all the fanbois and whatnot purchase the game on pre-order, and thus lose their money. If an MMORPG wants to become #1 in terms of numbers (which is what we're talking about, not quality) it has to beat up EQ's bodyguards first: UO, DAOC, AC, and AO. |

I played EQ for a few years, quit last June. I played wc3 in the meantime. Got bored of that, am playing a little Shadowbane now. Hmm, I'm not sure what I think about it yet. It's alright I guess. I'm not to pvp yet so I can't say too much. I'm really looking forward to WoW.
