Game Of The Year 2004!

Hmm, I could've sworn a thread regarding GotY of 2004 had been created, but searches proved otherwise....so lets begin one, shall we?

We are almost at years end! All of the heavy hitters have landed by now and wowed gamers across the world. Most notably Half-Life 2, Halo 2, GTA: SA, MGS 3, Metroid Prime 2, Ninja Gaiden, Splinter Cell: PT, Chronicles of Riddick, Burnout 3, KotOR 2, ESPN 2k5, Madden 2005, Prince of Persia 2, Jak 3 and Ratchet and Clank: Up your Arsenal. (Jam-packed with sequels! What ever happened to originality? I guess if it isn’t broke, don't fix it.)

If you're like me and haven’t had the pleasure of playing 90% of these titles yet *sigh*, go ahead and list your personal Game of the Year, whether it was released in '04 or not.

Therefore, I would have to list my Game of the Year based on the very few games I've had the time to play.

My personal Game (although not released in '04) of the Year would go to:

Splinter Cell

Runner Ups:

Splinter Cell: Pandora Tomorrow
Beyond Good and Evil
Madden 2005
GTA: VC
MGS: TS
PoP: SoT

I'm sure I'm forgetting 1 or 2, but I will be sure to list if it comes to mind.

Marcus_Aurelius 12-15-2004 01:31 PM

World of Warcraft

zensheep 12-15-2004 01:36 PM

Everquest 2

CityOfAngels 12-15-2004 01:41 PM

Definitely, without a doubt, Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas. As a matter of fact, this already got GOTY, but there are many organizations that give out this award.

dabossy2k 12-15-2004 02:05 PM

World Of Warcraft gets my Vote

BuddyHawks 12-15-2004 02:06 PM

another for World of Warcraft

blitz.fenix 12-15-2004 02:07 PM

Half Life 2 with Halo 2 a close second.

shadowalker 12-15-2004 02:09 PM

KOTOR 2 gets my vote.

shaggs_manoa 12-15-2004 02:18 PM

I would say Halo 2 but the story stopped at a chapter transition. Felt left hanging and seeing as how the Xbox Next is at least a year away that blows.

Fable was too short but way fun.

Mortal Combat deception. was a big R0x0r game. good party game

Well that's my top three

Coppertop 12-15-2004 02:22 PM

I'd have to say Half-Life 2. Haven't played WoW, as I am afraid it would take my life away and never give it back. But I just know it would be up there for me if I had actually played it.

Other great games of the year:

FarCry
Rome: Total War
Doom 3
Splinter Cell: Pandora Tomorrow

blitz.fenix 12-15-2004 02:41 PM

Should there be a worst game of the year 2004 thread? :o Go Doom 3 :P

Rudel73 12-15-2004 03:10 PM

Madden for sure man

Jimellow 12-15-2004 03:21 PM

ESPN College Hoops 2K5

Best basketball game I've played to date, and definitely worthy of being up there with the big boys.

keyshawn 12-15-2004 04:00 PM

I guess I'm behind a bit on the games, doesn't matter to me

RJD,
Wow - I haven't even played ANY of those games at all, except beyond good and evil, which definitely will get my vote ! [ok, technically it was released in Nov. 2003, but I played it in may and june]

[decides to write games I've played quite a bit and/or beat this year]

1st - Beyond Good and Evil - ps2
2nd - sanitarium - pc

Honorable mention: [haven't played it yet, though I'll be getting it for christmas - ps2, such a great, unique game !

rest in no order:
sega sports tennis - ps2
max payne 2 - ps2
metal gear solid 2 - ps2
half life one - pc [haven't finished this yet, so dont know how it is]
gta: vice city - ps2

[wait, that's it ?! I know there's more, I can't even remember them.]

Homey_V 12-15-2004 05:23 PM

Definately Far Cry

And as a runner Up Doom 3, Prince of Persia Warrior Within, And Warhammer 40K: Dawn of War.

For worst game of the year, HL2. Dissappointed me at every turn. Graphically, storyline wise and gameplay wise.

Jeff 12-15-2004 05:23 PM

1. San Andreas.

2. Half Life 2

3. I was a lil disappointed with Halo 2, so I'll give it third.

Not in the slightest. HL2 was horrible in my opinion. It let me down in every way.

omega2K4 12-15-2004 06:06 PM

#1. Sid Meier's Pirates!
#2. Half-Life 2
#3. Halo 2
#4. Rome: Total War
#5. Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic II: The Sith Lords

hirosada 12-15-2004 07:36 PM

Uh, I'm gonna go with this..

1. Burnout 3
2. GTA:SA
3. Halo 2
4. Katamari Damacy

Avail 12-15-2004 08:25 PM

This doesn't really work unless you have a block design separating the PS2 enthusiasts from the GameCube ones, XBox ones, PC ones, etc.

Carno 12-15-2004 08:59 PM

Rome: Total War

lpj8 12-15-2004 09:27 PM

Mine goes like so,
1. Ninja Gaiden
2. Halo 2
3. WoW
4. Burnout 3
5. GTA San Adreas
6. Half Life 2

Date the Banana 12-15-2004 09:30 PM

I'll go multi-console in the interest of brotherhood (x-mas spirit and all...)
Halo 2 (not so wild on single player, but multiplayer can't be beat!)
Katamari Damacy: haven't spent too much time on it, but originality out the wazoo!
Ninja Gaiden. Killing Ninja. Lots of Ninja. Fiends too!

bbbbbb555 12-15-2004 10:20 PM

GTA San Andreas

hulk 12-15-2004 11:25 PM

Hell, I vote Metroid Prime 2. Most reviewers knocked it for the same reasons they ignored with Halo 2, I found. Odd.

Jadedfox 12-16-2004 01:40 AM

1. World of Warcraft
2. Sid Meier's Pirates!
3. Half-Life 2

--jaded

portwineboy 12-16-2004 06:50 AM

WoW
HL2
Rome:TW

I don't have a console so GTA:SA is out for me until the PC version.

It's been a good year though. A very good year.

So long mr. innovation, we shall miss you now that Sega will not be challenging EA to improve the game. I actually prefer Madden over Gameday but Sega really has helped to nudge EA to keep improving the game dramatically to stay competitive. No competition is teh suck. :|

Im surprised more people havent said it. EVERYTHING they promised would be in the Game at E3 is lacking. And I mean EVERYTHING!
But just my opinion. No longer will I threadjack this. BACK TO GAME OF THE YEAR 2004!

For PS2, I'd have to say Transformers... I havent played it, but Im a transformers whore so.....

crossova 12-16-2004 12:19 PM

only b/c i havent played kotor2 yet...
my choice would be
HALO2
never played half life (1 or 2), world of warcraft...have not played that. i still have warcraft 3 that i never finished sitting in the box @ home.

sinjien 12-16-2004 12:41 PM

then u are still in the dark my friend. World of Warcraft, if u are into mmo's, is the shit. And this is coming from someone who lives and breaths fps'. I still have to go with HALO 2 though. The head-shooting, plasma sword-slicing assassin that I am will not allow me to bow before WOW. Instead, I will hold the impaled skull of a brute high in the air with both hands; and as the blood stains my scarred helmet I shall release from within my chest a horrendous battle-cry that will carry across the lands; a cry that speaks of acknowlegded honor and admiration between warriors. Or, I could just tip my hat of to you - World of Warcraft.

Ok, man, you don't like the game.

But WORST game of the year?

Ummmm

Let's check out some reviews of games that came out this year:

You can't say Half-Life 2 isn't better than THESE games

Worst game of the year?

:hmm:

You're entitled to your opinion... but.... worst game of the ENTIRE YEAR?

[edit]

To keep it relevant... My choice for GOTY:

PC: Half-Life 2, runner up: Rome: Total War

Console: Can there be any other than Halo 2? Runner up: GTA: San Andreas

Homey_V 12-16-2004 12:58 PM

Well then... Lets get technical...
Worst game that I bought this year

Merely trying to state my opinion that it isnt GOTY worthy, perhaps a bit overboard but you get the idea

VarsityDrinking 12-16-2004 01:37 PM

Battlefield Vietnam..... anyone?.....*chirp *chirp

Thogg 12-16-2004 02:07 PM

Best Game: World of Warcraft

Tied for Runner up : Medal of Honor: Pacific Assault and Call of Duty: United Offensive

screamincheetah 12-16-2004 09:58 PM

TETRIS BABY!!! Oh, what? I'm sorry, I thought you said 1994, not 2004. My bad......

Haha I know it was a hyperbole... it was just such a fun post to do

I got to go research crappy games!

YAY!

whocarz 12-19-2004 03:27 AM

My game of the year is definately Rome: Total War. I've given it a little break to play Half-life 2 and Pirates!, but once I'm finished with them, I'll go right back to playing the shit out of that bitch. Best multiplayer game is Call of Duty: United Offensive.

Ultimate_Gohan 12-19-2004 03:05 PM

Metal Gear Solid 3 and Red Dead Revolver. No lasers, mutants or super powers. I think its cool to see games like this.

bigd999 12-19-2004 06:10 PM

Without a doubt Halflife 2. The physics engine alone is so revolutionary it blows all competition away by itself. On top of that it was a great game to play from start to finish.

Man/Amazing 12-19-2004 07:31 PM

Half-Life 2 has my vote.

Esco 12-19-2004 07:38 PM

Half-Life 2 gets my vote as well.

cyrnel 12-19-2004 07:56 PM

I had more fun with an old $9 sale copy of Max Payne Rise & Fall than HL2.

WoW
FarCry
CoD United
Good LAN times with America's Army
...
Max Payne Rise & Fall
...
HL2 - Watch for cheap 2nd hand copies after Christmas

biznatch 12-19-2004 08:00 PM

1. GTA: SA...planes rocked!!!!!!!everything rocked!!!
2. FarCry: bootyful game...ragdoll physics....
3. HL 2: should go as second but only played it for one hour...so it'll go up in my list when i own it.

Spartak 12-20-2004 12:07 AM

GTA:SA

Without a doubt.

blahblah454 12-20-2004 01:11 AM

HL2 is defanitly awesome, but as my computer sucks and cant run it that well I play it for short burts at a time. But it still gets my win!

And Im dying to play WoW, the only thing is that whole pay-to-play. On a side note, if people hack your accounts in WoW what happens? you get your stuff back or is it shit-outta-luck for you? Because if I pay even 10cents a month on a game and I loose my character cause some dipshit out there is too lazy to make his own I am going to be very cheesed.

I wish it were 10 cents, more like 15 dollars. :D

mr sticky 12-20-2004 05:59 AM

Ninja Gaiden was my favorite this year. Just incredible.

Halo 2- since it took away the feeling of precision that made the first one so damn good, I give that the biggest disappointment of the year.

Ripsaw 12-20-2004 08:04 AM

Halo 2.

Second runner up - Ninja Gaiden

Mephisto2 12-20-2004 04:33 PM

Lots of votes for WOW. Maybe I should check it out.

Mr Mephisto

cockmonger 12-20-2004 06:21 PM

Half-Life 2...way more groundbreaking than any of those other games

Lasereth 12-21-2004 06:52 AM

I haven't had a chance to play HL2, KOTOR 2, R&C 3, or even my beloved Metroid Prime 2 yet. So they would probably be on my list if I had played them.

Console

1. Halo 2
2. GTA: San Andreas
3. MGS 3
4. Burnout 3
5. Ninja Gaiden

PC

1. World of Warcraft
2. Battlefield Vietnam
3. Doom 3

-Lasereth

Viros 12-21-2004 07:41 AM

1. World of Warcraft
2. Madden 2005
3. Halo 2
4. Metroid prime 2
5. Beyond Good and Evil

Best games I have gotten this year, though I still havent picked up Kotor 2yet.

thecoldone33 12-22-2004 01:53 PM

I really dont think that i eencountered a game this year that blew me away this year. This being said here are my picks for games that i simply enjoyed the most.

Console.
1. Halo 2 ( live play being most of the reason for this)
2. Burnout 3 ( great game but in my opinion multiplayer dissapointed)
3. Ninja Gaiden ( all around good game but not as good as the ones above)

PC. (not a very big Pc gamer other than FPS so with that in mind...)
1. Half-Life 2
2. UT2004
3. Far-Cry

The Magic 12-22-2004 03:44 PM

World of Warcraft gets my vote hands down.

Mantus 12-22-2004 05:12 PM

World of Warcraft.

Warhammer 40k: Dawn of War

powerclown 12-22-2004 05:55 PM

1 - Half Life 2
2 - Far Cry
3 - Thief: Dark Shadows
4 - Painkiller
5 - The Suffering
5.5 - Manhunt

Rdr4evr 12-22-2004 06:08 PM

Wow, The Suffering made your list. By any chance have you beaten the game with all three endings? I ask because I have only completed it on the good ending and would like to veiw the other two endings as well, but I just don't have the patience to beat the game two more times. Is it worth it Powerclown? And if so, do you know of any websites which post game endings by any chance?

sinjien 12-22-2004 11:09 PM

Hey Mr. Mephisto...if youre into mmo's and EQ2 dissappointed you (even if it didnt or u didnt touch it) WOW is definitely the game to begin this holiday season. Man, i love gaming during the college break!!!

guthmund 12-22-2004 11:52 PM

I only spent a little time with a pal's copy of Ninja Gaiden. I liked what I saw, but I can't include it. Likewise with Metroid Prime 2, which I haven't picked up at all.

All that being said....

1 - Splinter Cel: Pandora Tomorrow (Just a fantastic game on so many different levels)
2 - Halo 2 (Nice progression from the first game and although a bit short still pretty solid)
3 - Kotor 2: The Sith Lords (Not as good as the first and lots of unfinished stuff, but overall a pretty good play)
4 - Paper Mario 2 (cutesy, but a fine way to kill some time ;) )

I should be getting my hands on Ratchet and Clank 3 over the holidays. I mention this because I had such a good time with 1 & 2. I expect Up your arsenal to be just as good as the first two and based on that assumption, it would probably make my list.

eviL 12-24-2004 11:57 AM

hmm, i would stick to far cry because i love that small islands :p

Halx 12-24-2004 12:44 PM

what? No Leisure Suit Larry? Or am I the only one brave enough to admit that I actually played it?

Well, after all the reviews said it was shit...

I admit, I was looking forward to it, after having loved the first ones. But a shitty game is still a shitty game. But unfortunately I cannot afford to buy any game I want. I go on solid review scores or friend recommendations before buying. This latest incarnation of LSL had neither. Maybe when it's priced at $10 or less I'll try it.

Justsomeguy 12-25-2004 10:12 AM

Halo 2 on multiplayer alone

followed by:
Metroid 2
GTA:San Andreas
Paper Mario

Also, everyone that voted an mmorpg should be disregarded

aberkok 12-25-2004 11:23 AM

I pick Half-life 2. I thought it pushed the level of immersion in games to a whole new, umm...leve. Yay for gravity. Too bad it didn't have the same enemy AI as Farcry. Then I would have raved way more. I'm sure a game that combines both the physics of HL2 with the AI of Farcry will blindside us sometime in 2005.

Half-life 2 also gets my vote because they, unlike Farcry and Doom3, didn't forget about the little guy with the mid-range system. It runs great on my Athlon 2600XP/ Ati Radeon 9200.

Bratwurst 12-25-2004 05:13 PM

1) HL2
2) Sid Meier's Pirates
3) Doom 3

Ten 12-28-2004 01:40 AM

I would have to say Halo 2. But KotOR 2 was amazing.

My Game of the Year for 2004, FIFA 2005.

cataklysm 12-28-2004 11:21 PM

Half-Life 2!

kifferfong 12-29-2004 08:57 AM

Sid Meier's Pirates!

HL2 was fun, I liked it, so one vote. I have to stick to PS2, socom 2.

DownwardSpiral 12-30-2004 01:10 AM

Metal Gear Solid 3 for me. Such a great game, gives me the feeling I had when I played the first Metal Gear Solid for the first time. X Men Legends gets my Runner-Up vote for the simple fact that I found it so damn fun to play, lol.

LLL2 12-30-2004 04:49 PM

1.half-life
2.far cry

They just Added new types of stuff in their FPS.How many times can we see the same game just different name and guns. Those 2 did a really good job on bringing something new to the table.

emopwr 12-31-2004 01:35 PM

half life 2 and gta3sa

jonjon42 12-31-2004 02:52 PM

Sid Meier's Pirates! !!!!
