Good Free MUD
Hi,
someone mentioned the Shadogate MUD here a while back, and, after looking into it for a while, I quite like the idea. Does anyone know of and can reccomend any other free MUDs. What do you look for in these games, and are there any classic ones worth looking into? Personally, I enjoyed the trading/market implementation in a game called Eve (a huge and graphically pleasing space-based MMOLRPG) but my geeky side would prefer something that can operate over a telnet connection. |

My MUD (NetherWorld) has been without a server the last few months, but it will be coming back before the New Year!
It really could use some more players, and if interested, it would be great if you checked it out. Here are two websites about the MUD. The first is the official site, the 2nd a fan site that is very well done and informative: The MUD has a reincarnation system that allows you to reinc into different races upon reaching your remorts maximum level. There are 3 remorts. The first grants you the ability of two classes (the first class you started with, and then a second), the 2nd remort grants you a few permanent spells, and the 3rd grants you a few more permanent spells, namely sanctuary. At level 35 you can remort to R1 (remort 1), level 40 R2, and level 45 R3. When you remort, you start over at level 1 and work your way up again. The same applies to reincarnations. Upon reincarnating, you start at level one again, but are stronger. This format results in a very addictive and fun way of building a character, and it's easily the best MUD I've ever played. And I've been there a long time.. Furthermore, you can reinc, as stated above, into other races upon reaching the maximum level in a given Remort. There are a lot of reinc races (well over 50) and many are tiered.. For instance, there are 5+ troll races, 10+ giants, Dragons, and much later on, demi-god races. It's a really good MUD and very fun. The only thing it has lacked lately is a solid player base, but that seems to be the case with all MUDs lately, as the graphical games seem to be taking all the players. The MUD is currently in the process of being moved to a new server, and by New Year's (ideally sooner), it should be back and ready to go. I'd recommend checking the Official Site (above) to get the most recent news about when it will be back. If you do check it out, my character's name is Bonell, and I'll be on a lot. MUDs are the one game I come back to consistently, and I just can't get enough. Take care.

Elendor is very much the roleplayer's MUD. It feels more like a tabletop session than an MMO. Statisticall advancement and levels and such are nil...it's all about acting out the character, which is what I enjoy and try to do even in the graphical MMOs. I'm into WoW with my friends now, but once the appeal wears off and they all go back to playing single-player stuff it'll probably be Elendor for me again.

Shadows of Isildur is my current project. Huge numbers of players, entirely roleplay enforced, continually being updated and a huge gameworld.
