RTS pc games
RTS games are pretty much all my pop plays. So, I was planning on getting him another one for Christmas. I don't know what to get him though. He has Rise of nations (+ expansion) Command and conquer (+ expansion), Warcraft3, Starcraft, age of mythology, age of empires (+ expansion). So I am at a loss here. I hear good things about total war:rome. Is that as good as its reviews?

R:TW is a must have. It is an awesome game.
Just make sure his computer can handle it, it's a beast. |
I second the total war games. Very well done but a resource hog. Those huge battles are damn cool though!
|
All the Total War games are excellent. Shogun especially as the Japanese Feudal era is a largely untapped era in PC gaming.
|
Considering that Shogun comes with a copy of Sun Tzu's Art of War, you know they take their warfare very seriously. :D
Great games. |
I vote for snagging a copy of the Total Annihilation Battle Chest. Sure, it's dated graphicaly, but it's stood the test of time. I think any strategy gamer would enjoy it over many newer releases. Also, if he's a Star Wars fan, there's a total conversion mod for it, I believe.

I, for one, don't particularly like the Total War games. Not because of the battles, however. I thought the battles were fantastic, but the Civilization-esque world map was cumbersome and disctracted from the thing. I would have enjoyed it more if it were a more traditional campaign driver game, but that may just be me.
I would recommend highly the Warcraft 3 expansion, Frozen Throne. Also, there are lots of other Command and Conquer games besides the original. (New games, not just expansions). My favorite is Command and Conquer Red Alert, with its expansions, followed closely by C&C Red Alert 2. Very fun. |
Warhammer: 40K Dawn of War.
|
Warcraft3 with Frozen Throne expansion is my pick.
|
Warhammer 40k Dawn of war is a great game. Really fun and great graphics/gameplay.
|
Warhammer looked interesting. What are the requirements for rome?

My vote is for Dawn of War |
Warhammer: Dawn of War - an amazing game.
|
I agree with TA, but warn that the total conversion of TA into Star Wars was pretty disappointing.
Age of Mythology is good. Galactic Battlegrounds is okay if he likes star wars. I totally forgot to get Warhammer 40K. The demo was fun. |
All the TW titles. I actually love Homeworld, never played the 2nd but the first is absolutely amazing. Also Dawn of War is spectacular
|
Rome: Total War! Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War is okay, the gameplay is a little dated, but its still a pretty good game.
|
he has starcraft, he needs nothing else, buy him some Jack Daniels, he will enjoy that more :)
|
Warhammer 40,000 is pretty. I cant say much for TW myself as I havnt played it (Though I came looking for new game ideas myself, so I think i might)...ahem anyway. Warhammer was fun for awhile but it became pretty redundant. Its also a slight step away from the games your pops like. Warhammer doesnt focus as much on reasource management as the other games your dad plays. So if your dad likes that aspect of the game (the collecting reasources well to kick your opponents arse) then he might not like Warhammer....on the flipside if your old man loves huge battles he might love it.
However on my own small review, some battles in Warhammer are so incredibly easy you couldnt lose them unless you were 10. So he might think the ease of play makes it boring. |
Thanks for all the advice. I went with Rome:Total war. It should run ok. Thanks again.

My vote goes to Kohan. An excellent and entertaining game with a slightly different take on resources and unit control.
|
In my opinion Total Annihilation is very overrated. It just has too many units meaning that they don't have any purity of purpose. Also the resources are unlimited, which often results in statemales in multiplayer games. This fact is also magnified because defensive structures are too good.
I would recommend Warcraft III: The Frozen Throne, that's one of the best RTS games, second only to Starcraft. If not that Age of Mythology is quite good also. I haven't tried WH40K: Dawn of War yet, but I've heard it's nice. |

I hated TA. It just seemed to jumbled and not focused. But whatever. Its old.
Now Warhammer 40K Owns me. Its really a very tight game, well balanced, fun, and pretty as hell. |
