HalfLife-2.nl reports that a fake Steam e-mail is roaming around. The e-mail reports that there are some problems and that you will need to send your Steam account information to a certain e-mail. DO NOT do this. Valve will never ask for your information in this way. Here is the fake e-mail:

From: "Steam" < accounts@steampowered.com >
Reply-To: "Steam" < steam-validation@mail.com >
To: "---@hotmail.com" < ---@hotmail.com >
Subject: Please validate your Steam Account
Date: Mon, 22 Nov 2004 21:39:45 +1100

Dear Steam User,

In order to continue using Steam you must validate your account
by forwarding this message to Steam-validation@mail.com
You must include your account information in this format in the
message:
Username: (your Steam username)
E-Mail: (the email you registered your account to.)
Password: (the password you used to log in to your Steam
account.)

Our database will be formatted soon, due to some damage caused by
some users. We will need to record our active users and add them
to our database once again.

You must validate your account within 30 days or eles your
account will get closed. Thank you for your co-operation, Best
regards, Steam account Managing Team.

As said this is fake, so if you have received such an e-mail, do not reply, just delete it directly.

some people just need to be removed from the internet...

Mr.Deflok 11-26-2004 04:40 PM

They spelt else incorrectly, what else do you need to prove it's fake?

Shirtninja 11-26-2004 07:33 PM

If people reply to this, they deserve to lose their account. In fact, they should throw their PC away or donate it to people who can actually use them.

Umm, "Our Database = haxxorred", "sign up or be removed"??

They seem rather confused... either the database is screwed over and people need to sign up again, or its not screwed totally and everyone who is currently still listed will be removed (seems rather pointless!).

How can people fall for this? Even the email addy seems wrong, steam-validation@mail.com, why not: steam-validation@steampowered.com... lot more logical!

omega2K4 11-27-2004 12:58 PM

How could someone be stupid enough to fall for this?

Krycheck 11-27-2004 02:30 PM

The sad truth is yes, people do fall for it.

Bratwurst 11-28-2004 07:34 PM

Being a system admin, I can understand why these things work so well. Its amazing how easily people fall for social engineering, even if the copy that they use for these things is so blatantly false and poorly written.

Its like most things, if people would just sit there and think about it for a second instead of rushing, they might figure it out on their own and save themselves a lot of trouble.
