Is it wrong to listen to Iron Maiden while playing, instead of the silly ambiance?

Granpappy Frostheim on Wiping – Warcraft Hunters Union
Granpappy Frostheim on Wiping

By Frostheim
Granpappy Frostheim on Wiping

By Frostheim – July 24, 2009

Okay kids, sit down and make yourselves comfortable while grandpappy Frostheim tells you a little story about a boss called Razorgore the Untamed in a place called Blackwing’s Lair.

This will maybe learn you kids something about what wiping was really like, back in my days.

Now this was a long time ago, before most of you were even rolled. Our guild had finally gotten Molten Core down on farm status and many of us were itching to move into BWL and start collecting more T2 pieces, the legendary Dragonstalker’s set.

As you can imagine, we had our share of wiping while learning Molten Core. There were the wipes while learning each new boss, and the retro-wipes on Sulfuron when we didn’t get the priest positioning right. But to be honest, I never learned what wiping really was until BWL.

You step in to BWL and you’re in the room of Razorgore, the first boss. No trash, no wasted time – just step in and fight the first boss. At the time we were raiding twice a week. One night we cleared MC and Onyxia, and the other we started learning Razorgore.

w-razor1

And how we wiped. We would play for three hours, wiping on the same boss over and over and over. And then the next week we’d come back and do it again. Then the next week, and the next.

The fight required someone to control Razorgore and use his ability to pop all the eggs in the place. Meanwhile, various mobs spawned continuously until there were 40 of them in the place. Every time you killed one, another spawned to replace it.

It was chaos.

Our strat was to have two tanks kiting the mobs around in circles while the dps took out the one kind of mob that wasn’t kitable (hoping that the random respawn would be a kitable type). The result of this is we had tons of mobs spawning with no aggro.

As hunters, we had some unique roles in this fight.

Now this was before Misdirection, so we had no way to direct the mobs to the tanks. We could and did lay freezing traps to slow them down — and that was no easy task as the time. You see, back then you couldn’t lay traps while in combat, so when the cooldown was up we’d have to recall our pet, Feign Death (which dropped us out of combat) and try to instantly lay a trap before we were thrust back into combat.

Now a big problem was healers getting ganked by the newly spawned mobs from healing aggro. One way that we combatted this is the healers were only allowed to heal their kiting tanks — they could not heal anyone else because they had to keep their threat down. We had a whole other set of healers who weren’t allowed to heal at all — they were on standby for phase 2.

Healing the dpser and the healers was the hunters’ job.

Seriously.

Whenever someone (usually a rogue) in our vicinity was low on health, we ran over to them in a pause between spawns and bandaged them. They couldn’t bandage themselves because, again, they would get healing threat. As hunters this was our job because we could Feign Death to remove the threat we got from bandaging.

w-razor2However, this was much harder back then than it is now. You see, back in vanilla days FD worked just a bit differently than it does now. As you know, all mobs have a chance to resist your FD, and anyone who resists isn’t fooled and can keep attacking you (and remembers your threat). Well back then if any mob resisted your FD, then every mob resisted your FD. And, of course, you were in a room with 40 mobs. The chances of just one of them resisting was pretty darned good.

Of course back in those days we hunters had honed a slightly different skillset than kids today. We’d bandage our comrades, a mob would aggro on us, and FD would get resisted. So then we’d whip off a concussive shot and start kiting the mob over near one of the kiting tanks in hopes that they’d have a taunt available to take him off our hands. Once the handoff was made we’d return to our assigned group to find them all dead, and shortly after we’d die too as the whole raid wiped. Again.

It was good times.

Nothing in Molten Core had prepared me for this kind of wiping. And while it was at times frustrating, it was mostly exciting. Raiding in vanilla was an elite occupation. Very, very few guilds could even get the necessary 40 people together for a raid, and fewer still could get through MC. Just by being in BWL we were fighting a boss that fewer than 1% of players had ever even attempted. We were thrilled to be there, and excited by our slow progress from week to week.

Nowadays things are a bit different. I can’t imagine many guilds today that could wipe for 3 hours on the same boss, first in the instance, week after week after week without having half the guild members give up and probably deguild in anger.

Heck, when my 10-man group starts to approach an hour of wiping on one boss people start suggesting it’s time to give up and move on.

Kids these days don’t know how easy they’ve got it.

Back in my day we had perseverence. Those first couple bosses in BWL were designed so that you would spend weeks wiping on the boss before getting it. Nobody one-shot them. I can tell you we appreciated the slightest progress from one wipe to the next. We were encouraged by living an extra few minutes; that was progress. Back in my day we knew how to HTFU.

So that’s how endgame raids were in my day. And after a month of wiping on Razorgore I can tell you it felt good to finally take him down, and we were excited to step into the next room to fight the next boss, Vael, who required more weeks of wiping.

So remember that next time you’re wiping endlessly on a boss. Remember what wiping used to be like, and quit paying so much attention to beating the boss. Just pay attention to living a little bit longer, making just a little bit more progress. Focus on just making the next step.

Eventually you’ll get there. One step at a time. And it will feel so good.

Im so pissed....

so i jump outta my chair to cook supper for my 5 kids and me before our OS run.. and i get kicked off the server ... I try to relog and im told my account is disabled. 2 hours later i get this..

Access to the World of Warcraft account *********, has been temporarily disabled due to a chargeback filed against the account's past payment(s) which were billed to a telephone number via PaymentOne.

As a result of this dispute, funds paid on the account were withdrawn from Blizzard Entertainment in direct violation of the account's terms. This is known as a "chargeback."

The total withdrawn by this chargeback(s) was: 59.96

If your charge is returned to Blizzard Entertainment for any reason, Blizzard Entertainment reserves the right, in its sole discretion, to suspend or terminate your access and your Account, as well as terminating this Agreement and all of Blizzard Entertainment's obligations hereunder.

The account is now considered by Blizzard to have a negative balance, and will be unavailable for play until any and ALL outstanding balances have been repaid to Blizzard. These funds can only be repaid via a United States money order for the full and EXACT amount of the disputed funds: 59.96

This money order must be made out to "Blizzard Entertainment" and MUST clearly list the World of Warcraft account name in question: **********

It should be mailed to this address:

ATTN: Billing & Account Services
Blizzard Entertainment
P. O. Box 18979
Irvine, CA 92623

We strongly suggest you use some form of tracking to make sure your mail gets to Blizzard Entertainment; we are not able to assist with lost inquiries. If we do not receive your package, we will not be able process your request. Once the money order is received and processed, Blizzard will unlock the account for play again, provided these instructions have been followed. Upon payment, Blizzard will also credit the account with play time equivalent to any paid subscription time that the account was locked out for (up to a maximum of 180 days).

This process to unlock the account is offered with this email is considered as a final warning: ***ANY subsequent payment disputes will result in a permanent closure of the account for repeated breach of the Terms of Use.***

Unless the above process is followed to get the money order to Blizzard, the World of Warcraft account in question will remain unplayable until said funds are received. Please do not reply to this email, as you will receive no further response. Be aware that Blizzard Billing representatives will NOT be able to provide any alternatives or expedite this process in any way.

Regards,
Billing & Account Services
Blizzard Entertainment

Not only me but a ton of us that used the payment one method to pay are screwed there are players that owe over 500 bucks now.

I looked over my phone bill and it shows me paying and i have the reciept saying i paid the phone company.

Payment one actually in One day mind you, slapped blizzard saying hey you owe us this cuz all these players use fraud to sign up and play.

so blizzard pays them then locks our accounts until we pay.

so what gives.. i talked to support on this cuz its a "final warning" and said ..

"do you honestly belive im gonna to pay you and have them come back say 2 months later and say i owe more?"

he said that wont happen.. then i said well look what already has.

And im not the only one..

at 1st i thought it was my old phone company but every phone company out there wont all at one time, issue charge backs.. it all comes back to this payment one crap.

so if your account is locked and this happens nothing you can do i guess but bite a big one and pay up.

as for me, soon as my account is up im moving all my 80's to a new account and only use game cards.

man this sucks

and i told billing that .. if you dont pay you dont play.. how is it i could play last year those 4 months but yet here i am now screwed.

welp im paying blizzard tomorrow the mo i have i will get a tracking number with it.. i can email this guy at blizzard and it proves the "check is in the mail" he will unlock my account.

and yep my phone company said they (paymentone) got intouch with them and my phone company told them we paid you .. so they in turn went to blizzard and demanded payment claiming fraud.

so im screwed have to pay and i will... but i hope down the line they get spanked.. payment one that is..

in other news here is what i found out about payment one....

from the customer forums

Q u o t e:
in 2002 the US Federal Trade Commission forced the internet pay company e-Billit to refund $1.6 million to customers for fraudulent charges.

From J. Howard Beales III, Director of the FTC's Bureau of Consumer Protection: "This settlement serves notice to billing aggregators that if they support fraudulent activities, they will be held responsible for their actions. It also points to the importance of consumers filing fraud complaints with the FTC. By spotting trends among the consumer complaints in our database, we were able to identify the fraudulent activity and put a stop to it in less than three weeks.

After all the bad publicity e-Billit changed its name to PaymentOne.

you know i dont think blizzard did their homework.

but you know what .. neither did I so im learning now what to do in the future.. either research a 3rd party or just completly forget that option exists.

I've been busy... the new hunter trap dancing is a bit interesting for those that can trap dance...I been dancing since MC, but Surv spec got me standing still again doing pew pew pew.

the new Argent arena thing was pretty nuts, thought it was quite challenging the first time out there last night.

It's like blizzard took every off the wall suggestion from players and put it in the expansion.

Everything looks very interesting. I'm sure I'll be back to see the new content and play the rest of the story line. Maybe giving hunters focus instead of mana will help them balance the class.. Or we could be nerfed through the entire expansion likes rogues are in LK...

so um, slightly unrelated but, have any of you ever managed to snag a hard copy of the game before the street date? I ask because I get tired of watching east coasters log in 3 hours early and stomp through new xpac content before the rest of us even get a chance to compete.

Any suggestions on where to order from? I ordered from 3 places last year and they were all late (day of) deliveries. Amazon/gamestop/eb so.. yea

I got our BC at Gamestop, after work, day of. So I didn't get it at midnight.

LK I got from Best Buy at midnight. Was in and out back at home in 30 minutes.

I was going to opt for shipped, but always felt that if something happened in the shipping to delay it would suck that I would have to wait extra for no reason.

Last year of LK there were some Gamestop stores here in NYC that accidentally sold early if I remember correctly.

Personally I don't see why that can't happen more in getting stuff early since the rest of the content can't unlock until the servers let you.

I've been saying for years that they should find a way to incorporate the old eastern kingdom and kalimdor continents with higher level content or even just new content in general...and now they do it. Half the shit on that list is stuff I wanted even back when I played years ago. urghhh

Ha, That's exactly what I thought when I read the expansion info Lasereth. Kept saying WTF NOW THEY ADD IT!?

With the expansion, there won't be any unfinished areas left in the game. Hyjal, Uldum grim Batal will all be used. I wonder what they'll do to the big empty spaces on the Azeroth map that you used to get to by wall climbing? I'm interested in seeing how they change the map to allow flying. All the old secret spots will be gone which is sad. I'm glad I got a chance to explore it all.

Tonight I wasted half an hour trying to get into an instance that wouldn't load. Meh.

Insane

Regarding the future expansion, I'm really looking forward to seeing the changing landscape of Azeroth as well as the changes that they've made to the guild system, such as the guild talent points.

So.. I started playing WOW again... I''m not raiding or even in a guild so I'm not really expected to be online which is nice. The freedom to just play when you want without needing to be online for the raid really makes the game easy to put down when real life knocks on the door. I figured, Hell, I've been spending 100s of dollars on new games trying to fill my free time since I quit. I figure it's cheaper to play WOW.

When I logged on 7 days ago, I had 27 gold. Now I have 9000. Mining/Jewelcrafting has been so freaking profitable for me. I've also been taking tons of risks with my money that I wouldn't have taken when I was actually attached to the game and it's really fun. (Is it bad the only reason I knew I started playing 7 days ago was because I just opened and bought a new egg from the oracles dude this morning?)

I bought a stack of Titanium Ore for 300g. To make a profit I knew I needed 2 epic gems. With 4 prospects and a 25% chance per prospect the odds were against it. The risk payed off through and I got 4 epic gems from the stack. They sold for 150g each.

Then I bought 71 stacks of Saronite ore at 14g per stack. It cost 994g. I prospected all of the ore and auctioned everything and made roughly 2000g. It's hard to say exactly how much I made, but Scarlet Rubies alone brought in 700g. Chalcedony was bringing about 120g+ per stack and other green quality gems were bringing 30-60g per stack. Some of the blue gems though like twilight Opal and Sky Sapphires, I ended up cutting them and vendoring them. Hell, I bought a couple off the AH, cut them and vendored them for a tiny profit.

Being up early in the morning helps. Mining with a 310% flying mount in Wintergrasp at 6am is insane. I'm so glad they didn't rebalance the spawn rate of nodes when they allowed you to start flying in there. I bet they do fix it sometime in the future though.

Oh yeah.. BREWFEST! I'm 1 achievement away from the Voilet Proto-drake. I already have the Plagued proto, but finally having a 2nd 310 mount means I don't have to fly the exact same mount everywhere. Just need 190 more brewfest tokens!

I like taking long breaks from this game. When I come back there's all this new stuff to do. New dailies, New mounts and pets to collect. I didn't realize how much stuff had come out since I quit. I was pretty much caught up and had every obtainable mount and companion pet but now there's like 10 raptor pets and all the argent tournament mounts that I gotta earn.

ok.. Talked too much, bedtime. Gnite.

I just wanted to wander in here to say a couple of things.
  1. Fuck I hate PUGs that attract idiots who don't know the mechanics of the game. I just wasted 2 hours with a group that had a mage and a druid who didn't know how the fuck to control their threat. There was a death knight more than 5 levels above them that wasn't generating as much threat they were. So what happened? It felt like I was healing 3 tanks, except two of them weren't wearing metal armour and had half the health as a typical tank of their level. So then, of course, the group dies, falls apart, and one of them had the gall to call me the worst healer. Nice. So I told him he's the worst tank. "I'm not the tank." "Then stop fucking being one." Fuckwad.
  2. I think I'm going to let my membership lapse. I like the idea of mmo gaming, but I'm hitting tilt on WoW. The quality of my experience is diminishing (see point #1). I see there are a number of games coming down the pipeline. I'm thinking of trying a few out, and I don't want to spend more than $20 per month on gaming.

Yeah it's strange to watch my posting habits in this thread over the years. i'm all over the place, shitting on the game, praising it, quitting, playing, etc..

I've changed my mind yet again and I guess it comes down to this:

I'm good at games, I've been gaming since my thumbs could move, and computer gaming since floppies were actually floppy.

I have done enough research on this game over the last 4/5 whatever years to write a small book i'm sure and that is what makes you better than those "fucking pugs" we all hate who just log in and go "uh lets go kill whats his face" and "is that a good item for me?" every time something drops. I just decided, the mechanics in this game are a mess at times

Lets face it, yes, they work. No, they don't please everyone, (a lot of single player "omg why am i not a superhero?" mentality creeps in to this game) and yes, they require a lot of knowledge from it's playerbase when tackling the end game challenges.

It's hard enough for me to find 4 other people to properly clear a 5 man instance without it feeling like I'm carrying the brunt of the weight, It's all great that I can top DPS, top heal, or tank entire pulls rotating cooldowns/avoidance and health restoration abilities while the healer is off spanking his pud in the corner or something.

it's equally frustrating having to deal with the immature community aspect of it when dealing with 25 man content, expecting people to understand the mechanic of each fight, and how their class is best applied for that encounter, on top of how to gear for a particular role.

me and my friends are a group of fairly dedicated gamers that like to push ourselves to the very end of our limits, I brought people in to this game and I've been in top progression guilds, My friends have gone to other guilds since I left, (10th and 32nd top guilds in the US) (used to be 3rd best on our server) I can't say we're all of the same skill level, I don't play what they play and they don't play what I play, all I can credit to myself is that I taught them how to properly research the answers to any questions they ever have.

They may ultimately be creating a more casual friendly game which in turn will increase the "skill" perception of it's playerbase I suppose, I just remember back in the day when you saw people in BWL or AQ40 loot, people would stop and shit themselves because you KNEW that those people had a clue.

Now, you can run 5 mans and deck yourself out fairly quick in t8, and eventually even t9 if you're persistent with dailies. It doesn't mean you're going to be any good though.

It's kinda odd, it used to be the gear was the reward, now the gear is the requirement to complete some of the challenges set forth.

I guess the point of this rambling is that it's pointless for me to waste my time in this game unless i'm doing what puts me at the very limit of my skillset, not the very limit of 24 other subpar skillsets.

It's like playing rock band with 3 retarded band members barely getting by on medium despite you acing the entire track on expert. Your rating at the end will be a mediocre 3 stars and the game will not reward you properly as a good player.

I just don't see myself jumping servers or factions at this point, I just feel like any sense of community I had has been completly dissolved by name changes, faction changes, race changes, server transfers, etc.. I don't know anyone despite being there for 5 years at this point.

One thing I liked about other MMO's I played is that your name meant something, your reputation meant something. Now? you have a license to be a complete dick to anyone and everyone. 10$ and nobody will know who you are.

all that said, the game is ok I guess, I don't even know if I'm going to pick up the xpac or keep playing though.
