I've been checking out the videos on IGN after seeing an hour-long special on SpikeTV about the game. Two words can describe the new fight system:
RIDICULOUSLY AWESOME Commence Operation Download PoP Demo. Roger.

I loved Sands of Time and had a go of this demo a few weeks back, I was actually quite disappointed... it seems the violence is there for no other purpose other than to be 'cool' and 'alternative'. SoT has a charming quality to it, it was friendly, it was innovative and it was fun. Warrior Within focuses more on combat and grittiness which I wasn't really hoping for from the series. All the same I'll be grabbing it as soon as it hits the shelves.

That was the developer's plan, though. Can't fault them for sticking to it I'm nabbing asap, too, it looks freakin' awesome.

To the above spoiler: yes, I was indeed also upset at that, but the story twist in and of itself was so cool that I didn't care.
I'm very upset at the focus on the combat in PoP2, because I played the first one and enjoyed it so much because of the platforming and light puzzle solving. I though combat was a chore. An enhanced system really won't help with that, because I thought the storytelling hook of the first game was the best thing about it. Kind of a bummer that they decided to go in this direction, even bumping up the rating of the game (which really doesn't make a lot of difference), because I think they found a great niche with the first one - and it was somewhere I liked to be. |

Been playing PoP:WW on my XBOX and I have to say I'm a little disappointed. Not disappointed enough to put it in the 'Most Disappointing Game of 2004' thread, but pretty disappointed.
This focus on combat is annoying, to say the least. Sure, in the first game, there was a combat section that seemed mandatory before getting the chance to tackle the real enemy, the environment. The combat was tedious, but simple enough that it wasn't a chore. The moves were easy to remember, and there was a grace that surrounded the Prince. With this new fighting system, the button combinations seem overly complex without good reason. In addition, some of the combat sequences seem punitively difficult. I went through the inital section, before the first save, and had to fight the endboss 5 times before finally defeating her. Later on, when I had to fight her again, had to fight her four times. There's another endboss, a big hulking creature, he was another few times. Prior to fighting him, there's a whole section to negotiate filled with enemies that I just ended up running past because I just didn't want to deal with them anymore. Granted, in the previous game, there would be times where I'd defeat the enemies and then run around for a half hour trying to figure out what to do. There was a bit of monotony as I backtracked over areas trying to find that one ledge I missed. In this one, enemies are present as you're trying to negotiate the enviroment. It breaks up the monotony, but also makes it necessary to redo areas because the likelihood of dying while halfway up a puzzle necessitates the need to redo at least part or most of a puzzle over. The game will auto save sections of long puzzles for you, but not always at the best moment. I died in one section, reloaded and found myself missing quite a bit of health. In addition the creatures that I had fought prior to the save had also respawned and kicked my ass. I ended up having to go to a previous save to finally get through that area. I do like the puzzles, and I like the aspect of the past/present a la Legend of Zelda:Ocarina of Time. Reading over my post here, I'm just saying a lot of things that the Penny Arcade guys say in their post here: Quote:
