World of Warcraft Open Beta Ends Tomorrow

Open Beta ends November 18th. ALL characters wiped.

That being said, I'm currently working on the guild webpage for Heroes of the Universe. So far the guild experience has been good. Anyone who is interested in joining, as usual, leave your comments and what your character's name might be. We'll get this going the 23rd ASAP.

Kinda dissapointed with the game, not sure I'll pick it up when it goes retail...

Are you saying that because of the lag?

Two General Questions:

General: Should I uninstall the game in prep for Tuesday or can I just enter the CD key on the already installed beta?

General: I choose to play as a Night Elf Warrior and I got to level 20 (I just played on the Open Beta) and I am not sure what I am going to play in the retail version. I can't see playing the same character again as I don't want to do all of those things over and over again. What is everyone else going to do? Try something new or restart with the old? Just wondering and thanks

Irishsean 11-17-2004 07:42 PM

Lag was pretty bad, but the game wasn't all that fun... maybe I'm getting old, but games lately don't seem to have that joy I remember when first playing Asheron's Call.

You can use the current installation for retail! You'll just have to use the CD-Key for account authentication.

Play whatever you want. I'm making a Night Elf Priest, Night Elf Warrior (maybe Rogue instead), and maybe another undecided class. I've played a priest to 32 and a warrior to 16 and still have desire to play both.

Then say you don't enjoy games as much as you used to, not just WoW! Or at least describe the reasons you didn't like the game.

Irishsean 11-17-2004 08:21 PM

OK:

1. Lag was terrible
2. Lots of clipping issues
3. Lack of balance between races or classes
4. Quests incredibly repetitive, mind numbingly so
5. Quests have no relatinship to storyline at all as far as I could tell up to level 25
6. Lack of customization options for character appearance
7. Extremely bland range of options for appearance
8. No option to change job and keep the same character, I think FFXI spoiled me here
9. Chat commands use non-standard commands
10. PvP seems to have very little consequence for dying
11. Professions extremely unbalanced for making money
12. Money means nothing, incredibly easy to get

I'll think of more...

BuddyHawks 11-17-2004 09:06 PM

I probably wont be getting the game until after semester break when i go back to school (i don’t have broadband at home). Although the lag was shitty, i expect it to be better once it goes retail.

I've also been having the character dilemma. I got my NE Hunter up to lvl 22. I want to see what a hunter can do at higher lvls, and I'm sure I would be able to get to my lvl fast since i already know what to do, but I’m not too crazy with the idea of redoing what I’ve done up to this point
I think I'm going to try being a caster. I can't imagine playing the game as a ranged/caster without having a pet to tank for me, so I'm going to make a HU Warlock who has the ability to summon pets. (and his own horse!)

During OB, I played as a Human Warlock. Had lots of fun playing it and I would love to see how it does at higher levels, so I'll probably stick with that when the game is released.

Crack 11-17-2004 11:03 PM

How much fun was this last day? There were people dancing nake in the streets (me) and mages shooting off fireworks like there was no tommarow. I guess there isn't. :( Horde every where, Raids going on from both sides, it was crazy. We dueled like mad, and said our good-bye's until retail. Awesome game. Is it the 23rd yet?

Apokx 11-18-2004 12:13 AM

Yeah, spent the last four hours doing nothing but full scale PvP raids.Ended up dying (for the last time) inside the Throne room in The Undercity.

Jadedfox 11-18-2004 01:20 AM

I really enjoyed the one week I got to play it. Yes, item lag was an issue at times but hey it's beta. My first 20 levels I thought the quests were kind of repetitive (incursion type quests like kill x amount of y mobs or deliver this not to person p at location z).

Then I did my first instanced quest, VanCleef in the deadmines and I was blown away. Awesome stuff. Not to mention the Paladin quest available at level 20 which is a fairly huge undertaking. Sadly I didn't get to finish it before beta closed.

Keep in mind that most storydriven quests are NOT in beta and are tested internally since Blizz didn't want to spoil too much. So there should be plenty more to come in retail.

I will definitely buy and play WoW but not until it comes out in Europe. Mainly because it's a hassle getting my American friends to pay for my account and secondly...let them deal with the crap (read bugs) on launch day and the following weeks :D

If you've played any other MMO's you should check this one out for sure. I think the game is worth $15/month provided they do frequent updates adding new quests, items etc etc which, I'm sure they will.

And the game goes live November 23rd, next tuesday, barring any setbacks with the latest patch.

I had over 50 gold by level 10, mainly off skinning my kills and the kills of anyone else around me who didn't have it. At the time I left I had well over 300 gold and top notch equipment.

See, that I'll buy, because the number of unskinned corpses around was insane. I think not many people took that skill.

I won't be buying the game, but not out of any flaw...at least with the game. I can't afford to own a game that I play to the exclusion of all else. Tuesday I just sat at my computer from 8 AM to 1 AM, getting up only to use the bathroom or get something to eat. It's a great game, and fun as hell, and I'm sad I can't let myself own it.

Drider_it 11-18-2004 08:02 AM

well our star wars galaxy guild which is about 15 or so is moving to wow. Enigma dont know what server yet though .. im gonna me either a warlock or a mage.. leaning more to mage... area dmg spells and teleport are my all time fav spells

Drider_it 11-18-2004 08:03 AM

oh and btw.. with the money shelled out to them a month they better have a awesome plan to stop the hacking than what they do for thier other games.. or it will bomb horribly

-Ever- 11-18-2004 08:37 AM

Yeah I was pretty bummed I couldn't partake in the craziness lastnight. I had to spend the evening packing for my trip home for Thanksgiving. I'm pretty sure I'll be buying retail, but probably not for a week or two after it's release.

Looking forward to seeing you all again out in the WoW world.

You gotta be mixing up "gold" and "silver." Most players don't have 100 gold until level 40 or after. 50 silver is reasonable at level 10...some players had around 300 silver by the end of OB as well. That's not a lot of money, however...it's average. When you get to 20+, spells start costing 50 silver each. Then you're broke until level 40. :)

Lasereth, I know the difference between gold and silver. I put a lot of time into the game, hoping I would enjoy it more than I did.

Ok, then I call bullshit. :) Most level 60's in the game don't have 300 gold.

I played Closed Beta since last March with an extremely strong economy and my character never had more than 30 gold on hand. My brother's character had 200 gold at one point which is considered extremely rich. There's no possible way your character had 50 gold at level 10 and especially not 300 gold by the end of OB. People who played the game since March have a hard time getting 300 gold, much less in a week and a half.

-Lasereth

00111000 11-18-2004 10:33 AM

I am going to buy it, but not sure if I will get it Tuesday. I don't want to get sucked in right now as I got a ton to do around the house and WoW will just make me forget to do stuff like that! I'm going to run two characters; Orc Hunter with mining/engineering and an Undead Rogue with skinning as a profession. In OB I got my Hunter up to 26 and Rogue up to 20. I really liked the Hunter in both PvP/PvE...I had heard a lot of bad stuff about them but once I learned the ins and outs the class really shines. Add the nifty(but bank account draining) tools of engineering and you have quite a good PvP character. People just don't expect exploding sheep these days.

Las - I could see Sean getting a ton of gold...but 300 is a lot. There were skinable corpses everywhere. That was the reason I started skinning on my Rogue. I would send the skins to my hunter who could use some of the materials in engineering, the others I would sell in the AH...I made some good cash which I reinvested back into engineering.

Either way....look out you Alliance scumbags, this Orc is gonna be hanging your skulls on my wall!!

Seriously.. 300g at level 15 is so blatantly impossible that it's almost not even worth responding to. You could maybe accumulate 50g at lvl 15 if you spent months not leveling (and so not spending money on spells, durability, food/water) and just farming for tradeskillers.

Irishsean 11-18-2004 11:00 AM

I'm not your average casual gamer either. I don't go into games to dick around. I go into them with the intention of being the strongest, richest person there. Don't call bullshit on something just because you weren't able to catch on to something and use it to your advantage. Hunting in populated zones made skinning extremely profitable. Corpses other people kill and don't skin are like picking up dollar bills off the street.

Who said level 15?

BuddyHawks 11-18-2004 11:05 AM

Well he never said at what lvl he had 300 gold...maybe he's accounting for all the money he's spent plus the money on his person?
I never had more than 2 gold since there is always shit to buy.

But if its true...

Irishsean 11-18-2004 11:17 AM

Onyxia is pretty cool looking, even if the group of 40 or so I was with did get wiped with her at around 80% life. What level did you guys get to that seem to know everything about the game?

bullshit  if you only played in Open Beta, I call extreme bullshit. There is no way humanly possible you could do that. Ever. Even with skinning and all that crap. I've been playing since February, have a level 51 Mage, and I never once got near 300 Gold, and I fully understood the economy and how to make lots of money. I'm sorry, I respect your opinion, but don't down the game by saying you made 300 gold in Open Beta. There's no way.

I would believe it if you played in Closed Beta though. Possibly. The only reason I had 250 G at one point is because I found an armor piece in a level 50+ zone that drops about 1 out of 10,000 monsters. Other than that, I would pretty much only have around 30-60 G at one time. That's only because you can accumulate money really quick in places like Stranglethorn Vale, etc. Which is only fightable at level 35 and above. Sorry man.

Redjake 11-18-2004 12:13 PM

I just realized I will believe you if you show me a screen shot of your character with 300 Gold. But I'm guessing you "deleted your character" or something like that. Or you won't "get to the servers in time" before the Open Beta ends today. How convenient

I understand your viewpoint. The entire reason I play MMORPGs is to become way too rich for my own good. I did that in CB, and at the height of my money-making "career" I was making 15-30 gold per day raping the AH. The only reason this worked was because there was hundreds of level 60 people who wanted certain items in the game and had the money to make my scheme work.

There's two or three people in my guild who are skinners and they're also calling complete bullshit. Two of them skin every single monster they see and say that they can only make about 10s per hour skinning. In other words, around 1G per day is reasonable.

There's simply no possible way you have that much money in WoW, especially when others that know how to get massive quantities of money (me) can't even make 1G before level 10 reasonably.

300G in 1.5 weeks is absurd. I believe with 100% confidence that you've confused what 1 Silver is and what 1 Gold is. If you switch around your terms then it makes sense.

-Lasereth

Lasereth 11-18-2004 12:23 PM

Oh, and another way would simply be to send one of us that money in the game since it's getting erased. That'd prove it. :)

This thread went to shit pretty quickly.

If he says he made 300g,who cares?

Jadedfox 11-18-2004 01:41 PM

I played for a week and at my richest point I had 3g. :D
Then again I wasn't really into money-making but rather questing and exploring. Made it to level 22.

Question:

Caydiem posted: The Central and Eastern realms are coming down for maintenance. This is not the end of Open Beta; the realms should be back up in approximately two hours. Thank you for your patience!

While the website reads: In preparation for the upcoming retail launch of World of Warcraft, we will be taking the North American open beta servers offline on Thursday, November 18. While this will mark the end of the open beta test, there will still be some work left for us to do. To provide the best experience possible at launch, we will be making numerous final optimizations to our hardware based on the data we've acquired during the open beta test.

Conflicting information? Or maybe I'm missing something?
