Has the text-based world died?

Does anybody actually play text-based games anymore? Either online or otherwise, like MU*'s... Zork, Hitchhiker's Guide, that type of thing? Sometimes it's like me and people from Sweden are the only ones who MUD anymore...

Well, I still love them... Especially, pretty much ALL of the original Sierra games!

Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy - Bought up-to-date by the BBC

Hamlet - Text only adventure

Peasant's Quest - A short questing spoof

I MUD to this day, but my MUD is currently down.

I've been playing Achea during the down time, but I miss my MUD.

I don't play graphical games on my PC. I use it for music, Internet, chatting, and MUDding..

MUDding rocks, and I still get addicted to it for stretches. It's also something I always end up coming back to, even after month long breaks.

Fire up a newsreader and check out rec.arts.int-fiction and rec.games.int-fiction. Also, check out http://www.brasslantern.org/, http://www.xyzzynews.com/, http://www.ifcomp.org/, and http://www.ifarchive.org/.

Text-based gaming is very much alive and well.

How has anyone not mentioned Nethack?

One of the original is still the best. It's available for every computer ever made - even your grandma's.

And it's still a blast to work through, because it's never the same twice.

I love to MUD too, but the community is getting smaller and smaller... All moving to MMORPGS like WoW, KO, RO and FFO... All the good times.. MUD servers go down too due to low P-base...

I also enjoy good ASCII games like DasMarklar said. My personal favourite is Adom but alas, it too seems to be dead too... Guess the world is moving on... Its sad.

I think the original question was about text games, as in text you actually read. Nethack uses ASCII characters for graphics, but I wouldn't called it a text-based game per se.

But you're right, Nethack is a brilliant game. I've seen several attempts to add fancier graphics to the (incredibly deep) underlying engine, but somehow none of them have the charm of driving a @ around.

Wheel of Times MUDs have stolen many hours from me

Gemstone III by Simutronics successfully ended my childhood.

:\

That game was worse than crack.

Zork was the coolest game ever. I had it for my first IBM PC...ahh the memories. I was totally unaware of a Hitchhikers game on the BBC...i believe I will begin an addiction to this now...just what I need during finals week...

Edit: I remembered once stumbling across zork for free download on the internets. I quick google provided this website if anyone is interested.

Happy adventuring!

To you, Poyzun_Ivy, for bringing this up, thank you thank you thank you. I've been jonesin' for some text-based games lately and really appreciate all the interest in them. (By the way, the Hitchhiker's guide game is pretty damn cool if you ask me... Though I had to beat it forever and a day ago without the graphic interface.)

If you are referring to the link I posted it seems to be working fine for me? Yours, however does not really seem to be a secure site, as the https would imply...

Ever played Leather Goddess of Phobos? That was a fun one...

I learned to type from playing King's Quest & Space Quest...not all-text games, but all the commands are text..ed.

I'm saving up to buy the KQ collection...all seven games, plus some extras. The SQ collection would be nice, too. hmmm...Christmas presents, maybe.

I just started playing Shadowgate. Would you happen to remember if there's an NPC around Offestry that can train in riding? Or do I have to trek to another, more dangerous area?
