GTA- San Andreas

My kids want this game for the holidays but i have heard that it is too graphic. Any comments or suggestions?

mused76 11-07-2004 05:15 PM

if you don't want your kid to pick up how to say words like the 'n' word or others, learn what pot smoking is, or learn what hookers are i suggest you not get it. then again - what game is good for kids?

Redjake 11-07-2004 05:27 PM

A list of references and words used so far:

Motherfucker
Fuck
Damn
Shit
Cock
Suck my dick
racial slurs from every standpoint

dildos
marijuana
references to cocaine "Blow, yay, base" etc.
hookers
the plot revolves around mature issues (revenge on murder, "bad" cops, etc.)

there are sex scenes and noises from the aforementioned throughout the game

I'd say if they are 14 or above go for it. Or if they are unusually mature for their age, 12 or 13. Just because I remember being that young (I'm only 21) and that stuff wasn't as big of a deal as my parents made it out to be. We know what to do and what not to do :)

glytch 11-07-2004 05:31 PM

It all boils down to your decision as a parent. If you believe your children are responsible enough to hear the words listed in Redjake's post and not become hooligans themselves, the game is a very good one. However, it does say rated: Mature on the front of the cover.

If you have taught your children what is and what is not appropriate to say and do based on the situation, there shouldn't be a problem. If not, please start doing that right now.

Seandq 11-07-2004 05:42 PM

I'm not a parent, so I'm not the best qualified to answer this question. But I'll generally base my experience on from what I've heard of parents.

Basically, follow the ESRB on this one. Even if one is mature and is 12-13, this may instill some bad thoughts, such as that of "sucking dick" at an age where puberty's still just kicking in and porn is disgusting, not a turn-on. Therefore, I'd wait till about 14 or 15. Playing VIce City and GTA3 I would say, could be appropriate for maybe mature 11, and 12+ but for San Andreas, I'd say mature 13 to 14+.

well, since my kids are 10 and 14, there's not a chance in hell i am getting this game for them. thanks guys :)

It is not like PS2 only has a few limited titles. There is an endless amount of games for them to play that they should have just as much fun with. I'm almost 25 and I don't know if I'm mature enough for this game :)

If you'd actually read the person's post, you'd find out they aren't posting about how fun the game is and what people think about it, they are asking a question about the content and if we as players think it is suitable for their children. I think it would be quite easier to make another thread about this than scroll through 10 pages of posts to find a clue about the language and material that is included in the game. Posting the thread six times in a row without reading the posts isn't very classy

glytch 11-07-2004 09:15 PM

I think it's great that some parents like Mobo123 are seeking out information about things that their children play (and watch). In the other GTA:SA threads, this issue really isn't discussed, and would take away from the thread itself. I certainly wouldn't mind helping in any way possible if more threads like this were posted.

On a related note, there are many great PS2 games that you could get them as an alternative. Feel free to ask if you have questions about any others, Mobo123.

Maybe they'd like the new Rachet and Crank ?

It's a great game, there's violence, but it's in a cartoon form. I'd say it's suitable for your kids. Fun as heck, too.

glytch 11-08-2004 07:19 AM

I was just about to suggest the new Ratchet and Clank game as well. In my opinion, those are simply the best platformers out right now. If your kids like games like that, you might also want to check out the Sly Cooper series as well as Jak and Dakster.

Mobo123 11-08-2004 10:17 AM

Every time i see a new title, i see another $50 drop out of the pocket. but what the hell, its only money.

glytch 11-08-2004 11:19 AM

Such is the life of a gamer (or in your case, the parent of a gamer). Have you looked into Blockbuster's game pass? It's 20 dollars a month, but your kids can rent any game they want (one at a time) and play it until they get tired of it. That would make it easier if your kids buy games and get tired of them or beat them quickly.

mkultra 11-08-2004 01:30 PM

Ratchet and Clank series rocks, all the fun but none of the crudeness. Not that I mind crudeness, just that you might for your kids.

People and their Censorship....

glytch 11-09-2004 02:10 PM

Until age 18, parents have the right to censor anything their child hears or sees. While I don't think sheltering your children is a good idea, if the kids are too young, they tend to pick up on things they see.

If you'll notice, no one said anything at all negative about the game, nor did they condemn its language. There is, in my opinion, a difference between determining what is appropriate for young and censoring content

There are some people that do not realize that what is not appropriate for children is almost always different than what is appropriate for you or me, and who try to take away our right to watch or listen to said material. Those are the people we should be fighting. Not people like Mobo123, who is only doing what she feels is best for her kids.

My wife got a kick out of this one. thanks glytch

glytch 11-09-2004 06:09 PM

Wow, I have no idea why I assumed you were female. I have to apologize for that. Sorry! :(

I think its ironic that parents wont let their kids play games with Bitch, Ass in them when you can hear them on FOX all the time....

Nikilidstrom 11-09-2004 07:54 PM

Even though if more parents were like Mobo and his wife I would be out of a job, I applaud any parent who takes the time to be concerned about what their child experiences. Emotionally, children aren't ready to process extremes, especially without guidance. And while I love the GTA series personally, it is full of extremes. So far, the only positive message I have seen in the whole game is don't do crack. So instead of getting on our cynical high horse and point out our societal hypocracies, we should congratulate Mobo for being a good parent, and hope like hell other parents can follow that example.

I doubt "bitch" and "ass" are the problems here. The GTA series (especially San Andreas) goes WAY farther than those two words, that are now pretty harmless (not to mention the violence). Pretty much any Rockstar game with the exception of Red Dead Revolver is definately not "kid friendly", though I'm sure that's where most of the revenue comes from.
