Problem with PS2 and Old DVDs

I have a collection of older DVDs that I got several years ago. I believe the DVDs are about 12 years old. Anyways, ever DVD I have from that timeframe is not recognized by my PS2. Have any of you had any similar problems?
Also, if it is a common problem, is there anything you can do to your system so that you can play the older movies?

I've had a problem with my PS2 for some time. Does your PS2 just sit there for a long time with the text "Reading Disk" on the screen? I'll describe the problem I have, and maybe it'll help with yours.

DVDs with slick graphics on the top (?) would have trouble getting read by my PS2. The slick graphics may have been part of the problem, but I'm not sure. Sometimes it would work after waiting some time, sometimes they would never show up. While waiting for the disk to be read, there is an occasional audible click.

PS2 games, however, were never a problem.

If this is your problem, here are a few things you can do:
First off, this is a known problem with Sony. If you're willing to call them up, you can tell the customer service guys that you're getting a 'disk read error'. There was a class action law suit brought up to them some time ago regarding that so they're pretty keen to fixing the machine when they hear those words. They'll provide you with an RMA and tell you to send it to them, I believe.

If you're not interested in the hassle of shipping the PS2 and all that, you can place two 1-inch long strips of tape parallel to each other on opposite sides on the inner ring. It's a little ghetto, but has been known to produce results.

Good luck.

Problem sounds very familiar. Going to try it out and see how it works. Probably will send it to Sony and let them fix it up. I was assuming it was an isolated problem with just my machine, but it is good to know that everything I touch doesn't just break on its own! Thanks alot
