Anyone read gaming mags?

I am not that big of a gamer, and used to think gaming mags are a waste of money for me, but I bought a discount card thing at EB Games and I guess I got a free year's subscription to GMR. Any of yall ever read that one? Anyways, it has some good stuff and I usually browse through it once or twice before throwing it away. The best part about the mag for me is that I know when new Xbox games are coming out, and which ones to look for, because otherwise I would never know what games are out except if I stop by EB Games.

Anybody read any mags, and if so, which ones? Any mags significantly better than the others?

joeyaz 11-03-2004 04:37 PM

I get EGM although I don't really want it anymore but they always charge my card before the subscription is up and I always think well I get them next year.. I usually save up a few mags and give them to my little brother. I usually get my game news and reviews on the internet now a days.

I will usually just look through them a bit the espn and si that come to house will get read from cover to cover though.

Redjake 11-03-2004 04:42 PM

Electronic Gaming Monthly and Playstation Magazine.

In my opinion, especially EGM, those are the only ones worth paying for. They aren't bad, just not worth paying for. I've been a subscriber of EGM for 8 (going on 9) years.

Carno 11-03-2004 04:57 PM

EGM covers all systems?

00111000 11-03-2004 05:01 PM

Only in the can. I dont subscribe to any of them though...just grab them from the front desk here at work. I figure I can find the same or better information on the internet anyway....plus most game journalists piss me off but that is another ball of wax.

Lasereth 11-03-2004 05:20 PM

I subscribe to Electronic Gaming Monthly. It's the best gaming magazine out there (not saying others are real bad, I simply like EGM the best) if ya ask me! EGM debuted in 1989 and it shows. The magazine's reviews are mature and unbiased. EGM simply has a solid foundation within its reviews...something that many magazines don't.

I subscribe to EGM and Gamepro (I know it is bias, but the subscription was free :))

Yeah, I agree - I've never seen the point in paying for content that is available sooner, in better shape and with fewer ads for free on the internet.

Out of curiousity and off-topic.. Where do you work, 00111000?

EGM and Game Informer.

Coppertop 11-03-2004 05:57 PM

I subscribe to PC Gamer. They're spot on with reviews nearly all of the time. Damn funny, too. This probably doesn't qualify for the question but I also subscribe to Armchair General. It's only tangentially related to gaming.

keeb 11-03-2004 08:12 PM

PC gamer and am trying to get one for EGM, i enjoy both of them.

mandal 11-04-2004 12:19 AM

EGM and XB NAtion, all free.

Fremen 11-04-2004 01:18 AM

I subscribe to EGM (freebie) and Nintendo Power. (paid sub.)
NP's a little (sometime's a lot) childish, but I like the previews and reviews in it.

whocarz 11-04-2004 01:50 AM

Currently, I get Game Informer because I was stupid enough to throw down 10 bucks at Gamestop for their "membership" card. Come to find out that all I get is 10% off of used games, which I haven't used in the 10 or so months I've had the thing. Anyway, I browse through the mag when I'm bored, and I never really find much of interest in it, being a PC gamer almost exclusively. In the past I had a Game Pro sub, which was bought by a relative of mine for a holiday, and PC Gamer, which I got myself, although that was years ago. If I remember correctly, about the time Quake came out. Why subscribe when you can get the info for free?

Bratwurst 11-05-2004 03:23 PM

I used to subscribe to PC Gamer, but lately I just haven't really liked it. Hate to say this, but I almost feel like I have outgrown it. I guess I am getting to the older fringe of the gaming market now though.

I am going to subscribe to Maximum PC now instead, it still covers games, even if only in a small small way, but it deals more with the stuff that I am really into.

hulk 11-05-2004 09:02 PM

CUBE is the only magazine that I'll read, game-wise. Their reviews, I've found, are pretty spot on, something you don't see too much of these days.

dbc 11-05-2004 09:08 PM

I get xbox nation and computer gaming monthly because they are free. They don't have great writing but sometimes they will clue me into a game I hadn't heard of before.

omega2K4 11-05-2004 09:11 PM

I get EGM and GamePro. I think my EGM subscription doesn't end till 2008 (long story), and I got GamePro for free.

dood 11-05-2004 09:38 PM

I dig GMR, reminds of the now dead Next Generation magazine.

soloist124 11-05-2004 09:41 PM

i read gamepro but i only read it cuz it was free.

keyshawn 11-07-2004 10:09 AM

Right now, I'm getting a few [both for free, I wouldn't pay for either of them]

Gamepro - seems to geared towards young teens and it's often semi-outdated info; have information that other mags have covered quite month or two ago.
[I originally had a free subscription with them for year, and it got extended, without having to pay for it again :) ]

EGM - not that bad, love the design. Better than Gamepro.

What my entire pet peeve about gaming mags, generally, is that they focus their coverage on unreleased games, that aren't even going to be out for months, sometimes even a year or so [RE: Halo 2 and Half-Life2, etc.]
Seriously, the hype annoys the hell outta me - give me coverage on stuff that is released or just about to be.......the gaming mags are turning into print editions of fanboy-flamefests on gamefaqs

PS - Has anyone ever noticed the magazine subscription prices on ebay ?
[thinking they're not legit]

Anyone across the pond read Edge? That is, hands down, the best gaming magazine I've ever seen. You Brits have it good. You might get your games late, but you have an awesome magazine that treats gaming like what it is, an influential industry created by extremely intelligent people. They have a few Japanese developers amongst their regular columnists, awesome graphic design work...
sigh....I wish there was a store around here that carried it....

DarkPho 11-08-2004 03:48 AM

Edge is nice, very professional. But i don't agree with their ranking system. They act as if all consoles have the same version of the game, when in fact, there are going to be differences with framerates and such. They really need to explore each console seperately.
A good example is Splinter Cell, which in most PS2 mags scored higher than similar Xbox mags gave it. This doesn't mean it's a better game, just better in comparison to what the particular console can do (if they score games properly).

I only really buy mags for the demo disks (which, since i've had broadband, is now just xbox mags) and the occasional copy of edge. Whilst i can get pretty much everything i need off gamespot, having a hard copy to read is much better, so i don't need to be on my computer all the time. Mags tend to spoil the game too. I've been avoiding everything Halo 2 related to keep it nice and special when i play it (much like it was when playing Halo, although from different methods). So far, I just looked at Gamespots score, to check it didn't do a Daikatana and saw a bit of a TV commerial.

I do like to read reviews after i've played the game though, to see if my views agree with the reviewers and because i tend to forget everything.

crossova 11-08-2004 07:20 AM

i read the OXM..free demo discs and well written articles make me a faithful subscriber.

mkultra 11-08-2004 01:29 PM

PC Gamer, for the last 10 years. Its a really good mag if you are predominately game on a PC like me. However, some people just like up better with different mags because your opinions are more or less like the ones of the editors, so your mileage may vary.

OXM is the shit. Best console magazine IMHO. Good reviews, and a demo disk. what more can you ask for. (Get a subscription, single issues are like 10 bucks, so that kinda sucks.)

silver26 11-08-2004 04:09 PM

GMR is awesome. I got a few free mags for joining up for the discount card at EBgames, Ill probably subscribe once that runs out....

those sneaky bastards.

aberkok 11-08-2004 04:35 PM

PC Gamer, as a few have mentioned, is cool. They usually are first with reviews and have some hilarious captions. Unfortunately there are more and more ads every year. I bet it's not the only magazine that will soon be full of ads.

Cripes...they should be paying us to read them!

Cobalt_60 11-08-2004 06:57 PM

I subscribed to PC Gamer back in the day before I had high speed internet. Having a modem, downloading game demos was a pain in the butt. Now finding stuff out about new games on the internet is so much faster and cheaper than subscribing. Usually more pictures than whats in the magazine and most of the times the reviews are pretty biased.

n0nsensical 11-08-2004 08:12 PM

I read Computer Gaming World, but only because it's free. Anyone remember PC Accelerator? THAT was the best gaming magazine EVER, even one of the best magazines period. I will save every issue I have. After that died they sent me PC Lamer for a while but that wasn't good enough to pay for either. PC game mags are in a sorry state right now.

MPower 11-09-2004 08:54 AM

Was pc accelerator the one that was kinda like a maxim/game mag hybrid? That was an awesome mag. I dont get any anymore since thatone folded.
