Vice City or San Andreas?
I know there is already a San Andreas thread, but from what I've read most people are divided between SA and VC.
I thought a poll might settle it. From what I have played I've been a bit disappointed, apart from a few little tweaks, the only real gameplay addition is letting you swim. For me, Vice City had much better characters and story, so Vice City gets my vote! Whats your opinion? |
I don't think this poll should be created when the game has been out for a week. Wait a few months until people have beat San Andreas! You can't base opinions about both games until you've completed both.
So far I love both. Gameplay wise San Andreas is way better. I'll give my overall opinion once I've completed all of the missions. -Lasereth |
I also love both. San Andreas is far better in gameplay, so it gets my vote. I'm not saying that CJ is better than Tommy Vercetti, or anything stupid like that; I'm just saying that I can sit down and play San Andreas for hours without doing missions, while at the same time feeling like I'm doing something (managing my weight, recruiting gang members, etc etc), while when playing Vice City, if I'm not doing a mission, I feel like I'm just wandering around.
Vice City gets a plus in music, though. |
I like Vice City's graphics MUCH better (I played the Xbox version, maybe the PS2 version had graphics like SA) and I also think they set the brightness and contrast better in VC - I can BARELY see whats going on isome of the time.
Gameplay wise, SA is clearly superior. The only gameplay problem I've had with SA is that the lock-on can get goofy sometimes and will lock on to a random person instead of the cop right in front of you. Overall, I like SA better. I think its main problem is the darkess - its just too hard to see whats going on. |
I agree with Aerozeppelin about not being able to see half the time. Between the sunglare and the shadows you can't see much, then when you're in your car you can see anything directly in front of you because of the way the camera is positioned behind the car, this leads to ALOT of wrecks for me, If the camera was just rotated up about 10 degrees so the car doesn't block everything closer than 20 foot in front of you. First person mode Definately helps but adds it's own restrictions :) I disagree about vice City looking better though, It was probably the xbox version that looked better.
San Andeas adds ALOT to the gameplay department, and the story is good even though I'm not the biggest fan of the setting. The Economy in much better in SA also. You aren't rollin in the dough because there is always a ton of stuff you need/want to buy. Also the game lets you personalize your character. I think the games are equally as good considering Vice City is a few years old. SA took existing gameplay and made it better, much like Vice City did. edit: Aerozeppelin I've also noticed the targetting system being a little screwy, I've looked directly at a cop 5ft in front of my and I target and it targets a pedestrian 100 yards away behind me. It's got me killed once ot twice. |
I voted for SA, but only based on the engine and new capabilities. A port of the VC style to an SA engine would be mind-blowing. I got bored of the gangsta-jargon pretty quick, seems so over-the-top and mtv, but it seems the further that I progress, it is actually presented in a pretty good way. The anti-drug message is surprising, very smart move by Rockstar to hold up as a positive message in a sea of potential anti-"moralistic" images and portrayals.
I will definitely buy the PC version also, the mod potential is drool-inducing. Fix the color, maybe switch the radio stations, etc. Thumbs up so far! |

Damnit San Andreas needs to come to XBox.
|
I like San Andreas better so far, but I haven't been playing it long, and the most frustrating parts of Vice City only came out later into the game. So we'll see...

Overall I like SA a lot more. I did think that the graphics were a little better in VC though (and I had the PS2 version). Here are some major pluses for SA:
Climbing Swimming Weight/Stamina/Fat management ability to change clothes/hairstyle/tatoos "work type" vehicles that actually work (forklifts, dumptrucks, etc) better terrain (more hills, freeway, etc) better targeting system (able to change lock on target using R2 or L2) gangs actually are more usefull (even if they can't shoot water in a boat, it looks cool to have three people shooting out of the car) more fighting moves/ability to use hand to hand blocking much, much larger and no loading times (except for buildings) better control of the camera angles (especially cinematic camera) you can attack people with a dildo! There are more but those are the biggest things that are better. The camera can be frustrating though. You have control over the position but it doesn't stay in that position. Its hard to keep the camera pointed properly and fly up a hill in a bike. It's also cool how they added skills. You shouldn't be the best driver you can be right from the start, although it is annoying how things get blurry because you have poor driving skills. I'd also like it if the faster vehicles were more available. |
Out for PC yet?
I loved Vice City. Are the versions PS2/Xbox/PC different? |

I pick GTA2.

I thought the orig GTA3 was better than VC. I haven't played SA yet. I just felt like GTA3 was so different and revolutionary, and then VC was kinda boring because I felt like I had already played it so much. It just didn't do everything for me. I'm probably not even going to get SA.
|
I like VC and SA,but I have an huge problem with SA.It sucks when your going fast and something pops up that you can't see it until your about to hit it.Once I beat it on ps2 i'll probably not play it again until the x-box verison comes out.

I think San Andreas is far better than Vice City simply because of all the customizations you can do to CJ and your vehicles. Also, there's a hell of a lot more R3 missions, and their are a shitload of vehicles to choose from. I towed the Hustler away from my GF's house the other day and pimped it out, it's lookin very sharp now.

My buddy and I were sitting here trading off through the missions and one of the missions with Spoiler: Toreno had such bad writing and stiff acting that we were driven to distraction. VC was generally solid all around, whereas the flight from city to city feels sort of forced in this. I think for gameplay SA is a giant leap above VC, but they did a better job writing VC.

My understanding is that there is a 6-12 month buffer between the PS2 release and other releases. San Andreas is supposed to be the last one with that contract though. Good thing too, because I prefer the PC versions with their better graphics. Guess I'll have to wait awhile before I get to play San Andreas though :(
