I've been burned on big hype games turning into disasters in the past.

MooIII being the worst I can recall off hand.

I won't be buying to all you pre-order folks beta test it for me :)

hobo 03-17-2006 04:15 PM

i loved morrowind, and i don't think this game will be a disaster if it is similar to morrowind, with added features and better graphics.

Briz9 03-17-2006 09:18 PM

I learned about Morrowind from a friend. He was playing it and I asked him what it was because I thought it looked sweet. I got myself a copy and enjoyed it thoroughly. Then one day, when I was perusing the local game store I saw a box that said "Oblivion" with a "coming soon" sticker on it. I picked it up and saw it was the Elder Scrolls 4. At that moment, I knew I would buy the game. The box was nothing but the title and the symbol. No screen shots or anything, but I knew I had to have it. All the hype since that point doesn't really matter. Sure I've been impressed, but even without the videos and screen shots I'd still be buying the game. Morrowind was just that enjoyable for me, so I knew the next chapter would be too.

Briz9 03-20-2006 10:00 AM

For those who haven't seen these yet, Bethesda has been releasing small teaser videos every day for the last week counting down to the game's release. They are quite impressive.

Elder Scrolls download page

The last one will probably be up around 3pm EST today.

bookerV 03-20-2006 10:15 AM

The only of the countdown teaser vids that I have watched is the 2 days away one, and it was AMAZING!
I am definitely pumped for this now.... SOOOOOO CLOSE!!!!!

Buk 03-20-2006 10:10 PM

I think I prematurely ejaculated just thinking about this game.

12 hours...

Destrox 03-21-2006 05:01 AM

I have fallen in love since i got this last night after I got out of work at 5.

Its just wow.

For your viewing pleasures.

My rig is a AMD 2500+ barton @ 2.2, 6800GT stock, 1024 Corsair XMS @ 420mhz

Let me say this game is a serious rig killer. It runs smooth, but wow does it make it work for it.

Been pushed back to Friday here. Not happy :(

Hi Ben,

We have just been informed by Take 2 New Zealand late this afternoon that due to a shipping delay from Australia, Oblivion for the PC has been delayed by one day until Friday, March 24th in New Zealand.

All pre-orders will now be shipped out on Thursday for delivery on Friday - the new release date. The game will go on sale in-store from 9am Friday morning.

We apologise for this slight delay but hope you can understand this is completely out of our control :( We are eagerly awaiting Oblivion ourselves - we can't wait to play it! :D

Sincerely,

Gameplanet Store.

Ustwo 03-21-2006 06:00 AM

Well I was going to wait, but my home internet connection is fubar for some reason. May just have to get this at lunch.

tecoyah 03-21-2006 06:50 AM

Damn....need to build a new Puter...again

kutulu 03-21-2006 09:51 AM

It will probably be a little while till I can buy this but from what I've read it seems like they balanced the alchemy skill. That's too bad, I liked being able to create potions that would give me stat boosts of 100,000 points for 1,000,000 seconds. Using those potions you could create the coolest spells, I was able to kill entire cities with one area effect spell with massive damage/time.

That's a good thing.
Being able to trump the entire game with a skill you started with seemed...meh.

I plan on picking this up after class tonight.

Reese 03-21-2006 10:23 PM

I got it for xbox 360 with No Harddirve and it's virtually unplayable. It loads every 15 foot and it's jumpy for a next 15 foot when it pauses for a few seconds to load again. Riding a horse is worse. I may trade it in for the PC version because I'm willing to bet that I can get my mid range computer to run smoother and look just as good as the xbox 360. It's a really good game though. It's still lacking in the 3rd person view but it's alot better than Morrowind. I'd actually still be playing right now but I'm in dire need of sleep :)

Chingal0 03-22-2006 12:45 PM

Level 4 and a slayer of the assassins guild, yay! Yea, it's fun.

bookerV 03-22-2006 02:41 PM

I'm playing this game on a 360 with harddrive and it's running beautifully for me. This game is simply amazing. I am playing a custom class for my first char. I am VERY impressed with this game thusfar. Badass... simply badass....

Buk 03-23-2006 06:53 AM

Wow, its fucking fantastic!

My Dark Elf warrior is level 4 and I haven't even really scratched the surface of the game yet. There is literally a lifetime of things to do in this game.

bookerV 03-23-2006 08:32 AM

Ha nice Buk. I made a DE, and the custom class that I made is VERY close to a warrior. I just basically swapped out the hand to hand.

I didn't get a chance to play last night, but I intend to put several solid hours into it tonight. The game just blows me away... It's almost overwhelming.

I've already got 2 more chars planned out that I want to play through as. Assassin and pure mage.

Xiangsu 03-23-2006 10:29 PM

What can I say that hasn't been said. I am running a 3.4 ghz HT P4, 1 gig mem, and a geforce 6600gt pci-e and the game runs decent. I am running about Medium settings, but I turned on HDR. Its alright, rarely dips below 15fps outside, but I am getting a new card anyway. I highly recommend getting a Geforce 7900 GT for this game. Same price as a 7800 gt, but slightly better than a 7800gtx.

I am playing as a Knight. I was so eager to start the game I didn't customize my class, which I really should have.

This game is the best thing since...sex...ok, not that good. However, so far it does seem to be better than Morrowind.

Just my 2 septims

xepherys 03-24-2006 06:50 AM

As above, I'm running an Athlon 4400+ with a GeForce 6600GT PCI-e and it defaults to medium settings. I turned the resolution up to 1024x768 and added AA and things still run QUITE smoothly (I've had one strange glitch at one of the Mage Guilds... don't recall which one though).

I did a custom class and I'm realizing that I picked badly for my play style (three of my major skills haven't leveled up at all really, lol).

Yeah, the game is sweet. It's REALLY quite impressive. *sigh* But alas, I'm currently at work and not playing.

robbdn 03-24-2006 07:13 AM

This is one of those games that could use a "hazardous for your health" disclaimer... I played it all night long. It's living proof that the single-player genre of RPGs is alive and well, and capable of taking on any of them new fancy-pants MMOs anyday...

Anyway, I've got quite a weak system compared to many, playing on a laptop, P4 3ghz HT, 512 memory, and a Mobility Radeon 9700... I had to turn down the detail a LOT to get it to run smoothly, but it DOES run smoothly and still looks better than just about any other game that runs on my computer, with the possible exception of F.E.A.R. Anyway, this can is definitely playable on machines that aren't beasts, that's all I'm trying to say.

Plaid13 03-24-2006 10:06 AM

Well i did write out a ton of stuff about what i think of the game since i got it but... comcast sucks and my connection died for 4 hours for no reason and i lost it all. so im just going to say its a great game and the only thing i dont like about it is how you cant wear both normal clothes and armor to change the way you look in game. that was a nice little feature that was in morrowind even if it is totaly pointless it added some nice fluff to the game.

Ustwo 03-24-2006 10:31 AM

They didn't make a seperate PC/Xbox UI and instead ported over the Xbox one, even using the fucking game pad limit of 8 hot keys.

The UI sucks hard.

xepherys 03-24-2006 10:47 AM

I dunno, I like the UI. It's very simple and straight-forward. Also, having the UI the same for the console and PC makes coding and future changes easier to deal with.

Its optimized for the Xbox, and very non-intuative for the PC. Sure it makes it easier, but it suffers the same crap that every port game does in that respect.

I'm hoping mods fix it a bit as a LOT of people are pissed at the UI.

xepherys 03-24-2006 11:38 AM

But what would you improve? Just more hotkeys? I understand what you're saying... the PC has a lot more room to do things and it's nice when they allow you to use that. But oh well, I like it, lol.

I think I read about a file you can alter so that you can get more hotkeys. Don't remember where it was though...

Moskie 03-25-2006 02:24 PM

The game is amazing. Got myself a Wood Elf Witchhunter at level 4. Lots of great additions and improvements over Morrowind. I especially like the Pesuasion feature and how it ties into the buying/selling/haggling system. And the design of the world is even better than Morrowind, which I thought would be impossible. It feels really, really organic. And the part when you're at Kvatch going through the destroyed church looked amazing.

The ability to ride a horse is working out nicely, too. It'd be nice to be able to fight while mounted though... I was really looking forward to whipping out my bow and pegging something from a hundred yards away without even dismounting.

And it does seem like you should be able to customize the UI more. Maybe someone will make a mod for that. Things like using the scroll wheel to cycle through my spells, and being able to assign specific keys for the maps and journals would be nice.

But considering the faults we put up with in Morrowind, these problems are nothing... I can't wait to see what this game's got in store.

nukeu666 03-25-2006 03:28 PM

how are the dungeons?
as big as daggerfall or small like morrowind?

Chingal0 03-25-2006 03:30 PM

The horse is cool, but I find that I hardly use it anymore due to the fast travel thing. It works great.

And alchemy, anyone find any cool combines yet? I really haven't seen anything that impressive, the best that ive found so far is like 1hp every second for 5 seconds, which is a waste.

xepherys 03-25-2006 07:01 PM

Hmmm, I'd love to share alchemy info here. I've put together a few things that give 2 or 3 effect (one was restore health, restore magick and fortify health). They are pretty useful, but since they only show up in the inventory as being the first property, you need to make sure you hotkey the right pots at the right time. Also, having all four pieces of novice equipment help (mortar/pestle is just one of four items). They make the effects much higher.

As for alchemy tips (Mine is around 52 or so)...

* Sample almost everything once by itself. This increases your alchemy skill

* If you get a LARGE quantity of a couple of reagents (ingredients) burn them off into pots to sell. This will give you coin AND skill you up quickly.

* As far as I can tell, when you make potions with more than 1 benefit (or poisons with more than one property) you gain a larger amount of skill. I cannot verify this to be 100% true, but so far it appears to be that way.

robbdn 03-26-2006 02:21 AM

Well, I'm level 20, just got apprentice in the mages guild, and a cat burgler in the thieves guild... started playing around with the arena a bit too, seems to be a good way to level up your skills.

I kind of made a jack-of-all-trades character, and it's making things really difficult. Which is good for me, because I like a good challenge. The hardest thing is the oblivion gates... I'm honestly deeply confused about how a mage character is supposed to pull of those missions, as I have a hard enough time as a stealth battlemage... Then again, perhaps I'm not supposed to be doing the oblivion gates just yet, as I haven't been given a specific mission to infiltrate them. It's nice being able to tackle any mission or guild I choose though, even if my character isn't very good at any single thing. We'll see how it progresses... I can't seem to stop playing this game... it's a good thing I don't have anything to do this weekend.

hulk 03-26-2006 04:30 AM

I find with the gates, often you can get by without killing anything. Buff yourself up and you can avoid most of the combat if you know more or less what you're doing.

Moskie 03-26-2006 09:09 AM

can anyone recommend a place to buy lockpicks early in the game? i'm not in the thieves guild yet, working on that.... but i need some picks.

xepherys 03-26-2006 09:14 AM

I don't think you can BUY them anywhere outside of the Thieves Guild, but you can find them in crates, barrels and corpses (just not in any good quantity). If you want to increase your Security skill, or just want to open locked stuff, you pretty much NEED to join the Thieves Guild.

Yeah, but then you don't level up, or if you do your stat bonuses are horribly slanted for sneaking all the time... for some reason I always feel the urge to kill everything...

I got about 50 lockpicks right after getting out of the Imperial Prison by exploring the Vilverin Ayleid Ruins, right outside of the Imperial Sewer exit. Pretty much every bandit and goblin will have at least one lockpick on their corpse, and that ruin is full of them.

Spoiler: You can buy them off 'Sam the Shady' early in the game. To find him go to the stables outside Imperial City and follow the wall NNE. After a short time you'll see him standing against the city wall wearing black clothes with a black hood. I'm not sure how long he sells picks for though so buy what you can early in the game. I bought a bunch off of him when I was a lower level but at around level 6 - 7 he stopped selling. Guess they figure by then you have either joined the Thieves guild or have raised your Security skill enough to not break as many lockpicks.

Chingal0 03-26-2006 01:45 PM

You can also get them from a merchant in the assassin guild. I joined that fairly early, and that is where I bought most of my picks.

And for alchemy, I guess I will have to find the other pieces of equipment, I know about them, I just haven't had any that I haven't stole haha.
