Viewing your Warcraft 3 CD-key?

I lost my cd case for Warcraft 3, which means I've lost my cd key. But I still have it installed on my PC at work. Is there any way to view the cd key, i.e. in the registry or something?

Looks like not. It appears to be kept in MPQ files. The's a program called keygrabber, but it's a cracker sort of utility, so I don't think we should discuss that further.

I keep a spreadsheet of all my CD keys. Useful file to have in case of system disasters and what have you. Just be sure to back it up on CD or some other medium every so often (along with other important files).

The spreadsheet is a good idea. I do need to get more organized with these kinds of things.

Blizzard has a process for getting a new cd key. But it requeires sending in the manual and $10. It seems like there'd be some way to recover it from a PC that it's installed on. It has to be stored in some form somewhere.

THats a good idea. I need to do that, but probably never will.

Wink wink nudge nudge... awe crap, I am no good at being sly, try here:

If this violates any anti-warez rules, then please delete, and I will just send a PM.

I don't think it's warez-esque anyway... haven't tried it out though, be wary.

MSD edit: I've checked the file and certified it to be virus-free.

From the description of that program, it seems like a perfectly harmless, yet useful, program that can be used in the wrong way by those absolutely intent on wreaking havoc by giving out CD keys of their own games that they purchased. I'd say it' safe, but then again, I'm no mod.

it might be stored in registry like many other games. Also when its validating for battle net if you have a packet sniffer you can find it as one of the packets its sending out.

That looks like it's exactly what I need. I'll have to bring the CD in from home to try it. Thanks.

I did search through the registry a bit and couldn't find it. According to the link above, it's encrypted and stored in a MPQ file.

I haven't played on battle.net before. Would I be able to just sign up for it now to get that program to work? I forgot the stupid cd at home again, so I can't try it yet.

As Soon as you click on the battle.net button a packet will be sent out thats how all the programs for war3 find the cd key.

MSD 10-22-2004 10:29 AM

Retrieving your own CD key is perfectly legal. It's OK to talk about here.

pacaveli 10-22-2004 02:26 PM

if u send the disc to blizzard they will send u a cd key with a new game

Just log on to Battle.net, like Nuvdar said, log out, close down Warcraft, then run the program. Should work.
