I was playing on a server and kicking some major ass when the admin decided to get very angry and fuck with my game settings. He unbound all of my keys and made it so I couldn't run forward or backward. I have rebound all keys and still cannot move forward or back. Although oddly enough I CAN move up and down ladders.. Anyone have any idea what's causing me to not be able to move on flat ground?

what the heck did u do for the admin to do that?? isnt there a return keys to default button? if that doesnt work, i would delete all the .cfg files.

It's bound like it should be, and it works on ladders, it doesn't work on ground though. I have no idea what he did. I was just doing good and he started bitching at me and I must have pissed him off. He was a bad loser..

Hmm, resetting your controls to default and then setting the up the way you like em should do it... The admin can't change anything other than a couple of settings on your computer, like keys and your name, etc.

Well he added something to config which wouldn't let me run. So I deleted my config.ini file and had it make a new one. Set my stuff up as per normal, and made a backup of the new Config.ini to be safe.

You fell vitcim to somthing called "admin slowhack".

It was previously made as a CS mod to thwart hackers, allowing the server admin to mess with their config files. Sadly, it generally only gets abused.

Make your config files read only to prevent this, or just simply play on VAC servers only. (2nd choice is far wiser.)

The idea of server admins running client scripts that alter your files literally, is in some legal eyes illegal. I for one, agree that it should be dis-allowed.

C:\Program Files\Steam\SteamApps\<email>\counter-strike\cstrike\config.cfg

However under certain conditions, config files that are marked R/O can still be modified by the player from the game console or by a slowhacking admin.

This is NOT an operating system specific problem and it is not a MOD specific problem and it is not a bug.

Instead this is an operational feature of the Half-Life Game itself which is enabled under certain circumstances.

Players with their config.cfg files marked R/O are reasonably safe as long as they do not enable > Developer Mode <.

Putting your client in developer mode automatically gives HL the ability to override the R/O attributes of your config.cfg file and will allow modifications to be written out.

This situation has been tested and verified in all MODs currently available through Steam

The safest procedure is:

1. Mark your config.cfg R/O.
2. copy your config.cfg to a backup file.
3. set developer 0

In addition, config.cfg automatically executes a second file called userconfig.cfg if it is present in the same directory.

You can put all you custom settings there if you prefer and that file is never written by HL and is not accessible by any server admin.

I remember someone on our server did that to a player. Everytime they clicked it said "I am gay" or something similar. We quickly removed his admin priviledges, but it's still a pretty harse thing to do. We never used it for a real purpose, we would just ban idiots!

Maybe if you recall you should post up the name of the server so it can be avoided by others.

Does anyone know if there are admin hacks like this for other online shooters?

I've never cheated in my life but I've been accused of it on BF:V many times. I only spawn camp long enough to clear it out once before I try and cap and I've never used a hack, but I got kicked from a PB-enabled server last week for "hacking" because I was owning with the mossberg.

Wow, never run into this one before and I've been playing HL mods for like 5 years. I hate servers where some self-righteous prick decides to lord over everyone. If you can get it, send an e-mail to the server admin. That way if the asshole is just someone's brother or something he'll lose his privilledges. And if he is the real admin, then you prolly don't want to go back anyway.

It was most likey not a "hack" but what HL does allow is execclient. If it is enabled on a server the admin can type in a command and make them say "I suck" or what have you. You can also use unbindall on the target player and it will clear the config. Like mentioned above, make your config read only.

bah...this is one of the more abused items that I think should be gotten rid of...luckily for me playing it through wine has it's advantages

Well it doesn't matter much for me anyways since I only play on my server these days.
