what games gave you that holy #$%* factor

What games have made you think holy #@$% when your playing or watching or when something crazy in going on in the game??

for me it was BF1942 when I first saw my friend playing it i was in shock  and he was only playing the playable demo I could not believe a game like that was made...I never heard of the game before but I was just amazed at the little mini war that was going on with planes, tanks, people etc etc. As soon as that game came out I ran to buy it.

Another game was CS I went to a LAN center back when it was in the betas and I was so hooked after that... wow

Another was while playing FF3 (6 in japan) when the big <insert spoiler here> happen....I never thought that would happen ( I guess the people who played ff3 will know what I am talking about :p )

PS: sorry about the censorship I don't know if you are allowed to swear

Seandq 10-16-2004 08:04 PM

Fuck yes, you are allowed to swear. BF was a great game, I loved that. Uh, LSL was original so that was a holy shit factor..

CityOfAngels 10-16-2004 08:26 PM

When Kefka B.U.T.W., Spoiler: aka Blew up the World, I specifically remember, as a fifth grader, saying, "Holy shit!"
Now after replaying it, I'm at Kefka's Tower already, and although the game is still great as ever, that incident didn't have the same effect on me.

saut 10-16-2004 08:55 PM

Probably in Half-Life, when Spoiler: a zombie pulls one of the scientists into a vent. I'm sure HL2 will have many more holy shit moments to come.

xwesleyx 10-16-2004 09:14 PM

Dragon Power for NES

I played for hours. Beat the last guy. Game gives a range of choices. I mistakenly chose "Eat a Sandwich."

A FUCKING SANDWICH. THAT'S WHAT HOURS OF MY LIFE AMOUNTED TO. WATCHING A POORLY DRAWN DRAGON BALL Z CHARACTER EAT A FUCKING SANDWICH.

God damn the original 8-bit terrorists who designed that blackhole of gameplaying time!

Rdr4evr 10-16-2004 09:55 PM

I had a LOT of "holy shit" moments in half life.

mkultra 10-16-2004 10:09 PM

Clive Barker's Undying. Scariest game I've ever played. I won't give it away, but there is a setup in the very begininning (in the demo too) that literially almost made me piss myself. If you ever get a chance to get it, I highly recommend it. Especially if, like me, you are a fan of Lovecraftian horror.

Mr.Deflok 10-16-2004 10:34 PM

The original Splinter Cell when America is under attack, holy crap it felt sooooo real! And whenever I faced a boss in Metroid Prime, I was all like "OMFG IS T3H HUGE I IZ S0 SCR3W3D!!!11one!". Not to mention how fast my heart would beat, I say this with complete and utter honesty and I don't feel a lesser man because of it.

The Magic 10-16-2004 11:21 PM

Doom 3, though the novelty wore off after 8 hours of gameplay.

Half-Life, expansions included. I really liked the part when one of the scientists are running towards a soldier saying something like "Thank god you're here!" and then he gets shot, techno like music starts, and you have to fight past a squad of soldiers.

Call of Duty. It's like living Band of Brothers.

DJMala 10-16-2004 11:37 PM

I have to go old school on this one... Adventure and Zork I. They were the first games I saw that attempted to simulate a world. My thought when I first saw them was, "Wow... I can do pretty much anything I can think to type in." Of course, over time you start running into the limitations of the text parser and the boundaries of the game. But that initial illusion of freedom was very convincing.

Supersonic 10-16-2004 11:50 PM

When I first played Donkey Kong Country

Man, those kind of graphics outmatch sonic 3

beckett111 10-17-2004 12:49 AM

Fatal Frame, the whole game is a holy shit moment. Grainy graphics, bad lighting, and eerie music... not to mention that damn camera is your lifeline, when anything happened after 10 or more minutes of reletive calmness I would always fumble with that damn camera. I should have called the Ghostbusters and borrowed a proton pack, but noooo ...I took there pictures! The mood and frustration of Fatal Frame made it a holy shit! experience.

mrian 10-17-2004 12:56 AM

Holy shit in Knights of the Old Republic when I found out who my character really was. I mean, I was really like," Holy Shit! Shit! Shit!" for about 10 minutes. Only time I have ever done that with a game.

Arc101 10-17-2004 03:11 AM

Being a old timer, the first game I saw which I thought looked amazing was Dungeon Master. I also thought Resident Evil looked so good I even brought a play station to play it on. Recent games have been things like Dungon Siege and Knights of the Old Republic.

LeviticusMky 10-17-2004 03:38 AM

The first time I went "HOLY SHIT" was for the oldskool command and conquer. I was but a young lad, and it was such a vast game at the time. The sheer depth of the game was a maze ing. It was pure coincidence that I didn't get into Warcraft first.

Recently, I was awed by rollercoaster tycoon 3. Not great graphics by any means, but if you've played and liked the other two, you'll understand.

adysav 10-17-2004 05:12 AM

The whole of Call of Duty, but in particular the start of the Russian missions.
Crossing the river Volga under fire from stukka dive bombers, watching nearby boats blown to pieces. Scared soldiers jumping overboard and getting shot by their own crew. Once you reach land someone slaps 5 rounds into your hand, pushes you on and suddenly a deafening explosion throws you to the ground. You regain hearing just in time to hear a german machinegunner open fire on your position and you start frantically scurrying up the hillside while the bullets whistle past your head.
I fucking love that game.

Madd 10-17-2004 06:50 AM

Recently: Prince of persia: Sands of time.
The first battle scene when you learn how to use the dagger. PHOAR! Reversing time and sucking sand monsters into the dagger. Crazy stuff :)

One of the original and best "holy shit" times: When i got zerg rushed for the first time at my first lan party. Up until then me and my friend always used to play terran over modem. At the lan we went teams against these other two guys who went zerg. They decided to amass nothing but the full unit limit of zerglings. Man looked absolutly fucking crazy, no chance for the newbie human players ;)

silver26 10-17-2004 08:35 AM

Burnout 3 ! The crashes in the game are crazy.

And when the sanity meter in Eternal Darkness goes low, a lot of "WTF?"s come out of me.

Agreed 100%, best 30 bucks I've ever spent on a game.

irateplatypus 10-17-2004 10:15 AM

I'm the first to mention it?

How bout some Super Mario 64 action! It was the first game that gave me that "go anywhere, the level is your damn playground" sort of feeling. This game's impact is felt in hundreds of games since.

I remember downloading an .avi of one of this game's first builds. It took me hours upon hours to get the little file with my 28.8 modem, but I remember watching in awe and anticipation for that game. Thankfully, I wasn't disappointed.

is this single player or mutliplayer?

Bongomanrae 10-17-2004 11:29 AM

The first game that amazed me was System Shock 2, I had just brought a new computer and this was the first game I ever played on it. The visuals were just so stunning (at the time ;) ) and the storyline and sounds effects etc all added up for a massive experiance.

Installing Unreal Tournament shortly after was also right up there but more for multiplayer reasons as I wasn't so  by awesome graphics, sound etc by then.

Leefy 10-17-2004 11:55 AM

Bubble Bobble for NES, that game was so amazing that I kept playing it. It's all some of my friends and I would play. I still play it sometime if I get really, really bored :p

Single, I don't think I've ever played multiplayer
I should look into it.

whocarz 10-17-2004 03:44 PM

Multiplayer CoD is pretty fun, and it's gotten even better with the expansion.

pottsynz 10-17-2004 04:55 PM

MOHAA- the beach invasion/SPR bit. Coming off the boat and all your dudes get cut down, I wanted to get back on the boat and drive it away! haha!

yodatreat 10-17-2004 05:00 PM

This one has got to go to DooM The first episode shareware. it's kinda spooky all the way through, then I think it's level 5 you get stuck in a maze like bunch of corridors, I'm just running along blasting imps like it ain't no thing, then suddenly I hear the pinky munching noise & my screen is going red i turn around and there he is filling the corridor with his awesome pink jaws of death.. . that made me scream. Good times. Recently though the Insanity effects of Eternal Darkness provide dozens of What the Fuck & Holy Shit moments.

bubbagump 10-17-2004 05:05 PM

Half-Life, when I would get caught in the things that hang from the ceilings, I would freak out.

kd4 10-17-2004 05:28 PM

Fable. I liked it a lot....haha and Katamari Damacy oh man that's a pretty fun game

freddy b 10-17-2004 06:15 PM

when i first saw and played a demo for oddworld's abe oddysee

Palamidian 10-17-2004 07:22 PM

When i found out that i was Reven in KOTOR.

When i first did anything in Ninja Gaiden, man you could do so much cool ninja shit in that game!

NeoRete 10-17-2004 08:55 PM

In the catacombs level of Thief II, crawling around in small tunnels, trying to dodge the undead haunts that were clanging chains and making ghostly whispers. The sounds alone really brought the adrenaline levels up, and built up tension to the point where when I did come face-to-face to haunt, I jumped back from my desk.

zero2 10-17-2004 09:05 PM

the game was devil may cry, and I was fighting the boss which was this cat-like creature, that could change it's shape.

Ace_O_Spades 10-17-2004 09:54 PM

Oh lord... TONS of times

X-Wing vs. Tie Fighter: Having massively intense dogfights, then hearing over the com that... a Star Destroyer just jumped into the game, and yes, you will have to kill it. Fear

Burnout 3: Basically everything

Half-Life: crabbies jumping out of vents

Thief 2: Sneaking around the police station

Thief 3: CRUSH AND KILL AND CRUSH AND KILL AND KILL AND KILL

I could go on, but i wont

Architeuthis 10-18-2004 02:50 AM

Ultima Online has had the most "Holy ****" on me. First time in the game
a fellow gamer showed me how to tame a bear. I was stunned. Then he proceeded
by killing a deer and making me a pair of leather pants. A little later i was introduced
in a big player run inn and here i almost bust some intestine laughing at the "Drunken
Rhymer" contest that was held later that evening.
This whole experience convinced me that i had stumbled on to the future of gaming ;)

Later i was jumped by a pack of PKs, the ensuing adrenalin rush had me hooked on that game for 6 years.

Other holy **** moments occurred in a lot of other games, here is a small list:

Wing Commander (Graphics)
Ultima Underworld ( The 3D'ish world)
Master of Orion 2 ( the Challenge )
Command & Conquer (Multiplayer)
Doom ( Multiplayer )

aKula 10-18-2004 04:52 AM

watching a cs demo for the first time. Bullseye ninja defusing in a 1v5 situation.

hulk 10-18-2004 05:09 AM

The final screen of Marathon Infinity. The realisation that you've just fought your way over nearly 100 levels, died a thousand deaths and all sorts of other wikkid shit. It rules.

Stug 10-18-2004 05:10 AM

Holy #$%* factor game...

Lame as it now sounds: 'Sonic the Hedgehog' for the Sega Megadrive was the fastest, most 'Holy #$%*' game that I had ever seen... unfortunately Sonic Heros for the Xbox had to be taken back to the shop the day after I bought it, how did Sega let it all slip away..?

bookerV 10-18-2004 08:42 AM

Hrmmmm many many moments for many different reason. Here is a short list...

FF2 plot. I loved the ups and downs and many twists, that was a great game.

FF3 plot & gameplay. Back in the day this game just had it all. I played it way too many times...

FF7 plot, gameplay, graphics. At the time this game just blew me away. The CGI movies were incredible, the story was and is still in my top 3 all time video game stories. It was just a great game.

FFX graphics. When I started playing this game I was in awe at the graphics throughout.

Halo. The first time I saw this game is when you fly down onto the beach in the middle of a war. It really drew me in and I knew I had to get that game...

Everquest. The sheer size and depth of the game. When I first started playing (at release of the first expansion) it was a truely revolutionary time in the game, everything was fresh and new. It was such a great gaming experience. Stole quite a bit of my time that game...

DOOM3 for scare factor. The beginning of this game, before you get used to what is going to happen has quite a few moments to make you jump, and the atmosphere is great!

Warcraft. My first RTS. It totally sucked me in.

Diablo for the online play. I had so much fun playing this game with my friends. Good times.

Ok that is all I can think of right now... Damn I played a lot of video games...

Maveric 10-18-2004 01:29 PM

Asheron's Call - many times i experienced holy shit moments...

one time was watching some jerkwad brag about how bad ass he was while we was pk'ing level 1 noobs at the training hall then watched him get backstabbed by someone's monarch who came to seek revenge.

racing one mouthy jerkwad to get some loot and watching him turn in the corner and run into a massive mob which in turned sent him back to the lifestone.

getting chased by huge rampaging tuskers...

watching the white rabbit one shot kill monarch level players...
