Would YOU do this?

Spend student loan money to upgrade your PC so you can play HL2 at a smoothe framerate?

The money is just sitting there in my account... Why does that goddamn "responsibility" thing have to stop me from doing fun and irresponsible things?

Destrox 10-14-2004 10:33 PM

Hah, would I? Silly you, I spent mine on alcohol, games, clothes, and stuff for my truck 2 months ago.

omega2K4 10-15-2004 12:01 AM

If I had student loan money, yes. Then again, I hated school and dropped out of college 1 1/2 years in.

silent_jay 10-15-2004 05:05 AM

I've got my student and yes I think I would do that, thanks for the idea Ace.

Lasereth 10-15-2004 05:07 AM

You have money left after your student loans!? I get $5,500 a year from the government in loans and it's not nearly enough to pay for my college. :(

irateplatypus 10-15-2004 05:39 AM

i'm w/you lasereth,

i get 7,500 a semester in scholarships and i max out the federal loans... and i still have monthly cash payments. this would be a dream for me.

as a primarily console gamer, i can proudly say i'll never have to spend federal loan money to continue to play games on my platform of choice.

sushiboy 10-15-2004 05:55 AM

I say you guys suck!
It is tax payers like me that are subsidizing your spending.
boo!

First of all, I am young enough that Social Security won;t be around when I am eligable for it, Second, if I were to get social security, it would be the money I paid into it. Third, if I were to get Social Security, it wouldn't be under false pretenses.

Dane Bramage 10-15-2004 07:00 AM

Yes... absolutely. Do what ever you have to do to make it through college. If that means spending 75% of your time gaming... then so be it.

I made it through college partly from the help of one of life's classic games... Masters of Orion 2.

And as for the question of federal loan money... you are gonna pay it back, so you might as well spend it on something you really enjoy.

Even though you pay back the money, the loans are still subsidized by the federal government.

filtherton 10-15-2004 08:12 AM

If you don't think you need it for school, well, you have to spend it on something.

Dane Bramage 10-15-2004 08:14 AM

Right... and I paid interest on it too... it's the cost of doing business.

Dude, stop trolling. If you wanna pick a fight, then post in the politics forum.

Ace_O_Spades 10-15-2004 09:59 AM

The thing is this:

after all my MUST expenses this semester, I still have 2286.78 left on my loan

SHOULD I save it for next semester? Or should I upgrade to a pimped PC?

I'm leaning towards yes at this point... spend no more than I need to on a mobo, ram, and processor

I already have everything else top notch

filtherton 10-15-2004 10:12 AM

Or,

You could send it to one Filtherton J. Filtherson ;)

Scorps 10-15-2004 10:26 AM

I would go for it, I would spend it on other stuff but what ever you want.....its your money now!

Dane Bramage 10-15-2004 10:39 AM

Don't you also need your 'puter for school?

If you really need to reationalize... there ya go ;)

I don't think word needs a 3ghz to run it...LOL :D

Ace_O_Spades 10-15-2004 11:14 AM

To help me upgrade my computer:

And yes... of COURSE i need 3GHz to run my word processors and internet ;)

that and HL2

bookerV 10-15-2004 11:23 AM

I'd do it... I wouldn't enjoy it and I'd feel a bit like a scammer, but I'd still do it. I can live with a bit of the shame :) Go for gold, to be successful at school you need stress relief, and a good game on the ole PC can help do that...

I have the same dilemma. The money is there, and I really DO need a new PC, and with Half Life 2 just around the corner.............its killing me man!

Yes, you can't imagine how difficult it was for me to convince my dad of the same thing when I was in college... of course back then I was hoping to upgrade my 286/4 MB RAM/40 MB HDD! I had just enough HD space to install Win 3.1 and Word, but nothing else. Of course, I didn't want him to know I was playing games

Oh how times have changed.

Derwood 10-15-2004 01:00 PM

You are all going to SOOO regret doing that when you are paying off those loans for the next 10 years after college.

yeah i know... c'est la vie

Dane Bramage 10-15-2004 02:39 PM

I don't know... the intrest rates are great for student loans. I think mine was 3.5%... can't get a loan that low for anything else. Pretty good way to finance your new 'puter if you ask me.

gduventree 10-15-2004 03:32 PM

Hee hee, money is meant to be spent. As long as you've got all the basics covered, then why not?

Sure, you could invest the money now and use it to help pay off your loan sooner when the time comes, but that's nowhere near as fun, now is it?

Besides, it's the government's fault for giving you too much money :)

kutulu 10-15-2004 03:37 PM

I did it. In retrospect, I shouldn't have got a student loan. I didn't *need* the money but it came in handy to pay bills that I had at the time. Instead of working 5 days per week I only worked 3 so I guess I did need it because otherwise I wouldn't have been able to keep my sanity while working 40hrs and taking 12 credit hours. My grades would have really suffered.

When I got my loan I had a P1 with a 20MB HDD. I actually did need to buy a computer with it. However, I didn't get a great PC, just one that was good enough (P3). Nowdays I can't afford to pay my loan so I've had it in forebearance for about a year. It just keeps building interest till I can get a new job that pays more. Luckily it is under 4% so the int doesn't build up too fast.

If all your other shit is paid for, do it.

depdawg77 10-16-2004 04:07 PM

Spend the money !!!! Enjoy the game....

Lockjaw 10-16-2004 04:45 PM

Dude stick that money in an account and don't touch it until you get out of college. The day you get your first loan booklet you'll be so much happier writing that giant check and have it applied directly to the principal. You think you want stuff now just wait until you graduate and you want simple stuff like gas money...you'll wish you hadn't spent all that cash then. Save it.

Viros 10-16-2004 04:57 PM

Yes. Yes I would. In a hurry.

portwineboy 10-16-2004 07:44 PM

Back in the day a student loan program my employer sponsored offered up to $3K for a computer for educational use. Got myself a nice 386sx system to replace my 8088 Sperry. Going from CGA to VGA, now that was money well spent (and loaned). I'd do it again too. I needed a way in college to spend downtime that didn't include massive amounts of alcohol.

mkultra 10-16-2004 10:02 PM

I dunno about spending my scholarship money, but I do feel a bad case of the 'flu' coming on in a few weekes when it finally gets released.

The Magic 10-16-2004 11:24 PM

Spend the money.

You're helping the economy, that makes it right doesn't it?
