Ooo, I've done a few a while back... There was this really good one I used to go too, then I forgot where it was and what it was called,

Anyways, the last one I was on was called The Lost Dimension, the system was really good, it just needed more people.

I used to, played on Eternal Darkness a lot in college, eventually picked up a god spot and designed a couple huge areas before I got bored with it. It just doesn't hold my interest anymore. =(

I wizzed on 3 Kingdoms about 10 years ago. 42 days logged in after 1 year of playing woke me up right quick. That's the reason why today I avoid MMORPGs like the palgue: I'd waste what's left of my life away playing them and pay monthly for the pleasure of doing it, too. No thanks.

Still, WoW looks pretty nice...

I am a regular in Achaea, Imperian and now Lusternia (which is in open beta). All three are owned by Iron Realms Entertainment and have some things fairly similar - one of those is that without a doubt its the single best MUD engine I have ever seen, and considering that one of their games can expect between 2-600 people on at any time (on average) it has to be.

I've played some Discworld. Actually started a character 3 times, then got bored after about 5 months each time....

Hmmm, maybe I'll try again

Used to...

I used to play on Isengard, a Mordor-based MUD. One of my friends eventually took the Mordor base and set up his own version called Moosengard. I created some stuff for the game, including a MUD version of a facehugger, which promptly killed all the DMs.

That MUD sucked me in pretty ferociously, which is why I'm afraid to try any MMORPGs these days. I mean hell, Isengard was just text...throw in some pretty graphics and particle effects and I'm totally screwed.

I don't know about that... I used to play MUDs pretty heavily, I once calculated and one year I spent a third of my life, 8 hours a day on average, on the MUD. I used to code for Discworld, and at one point it was my biggest time sink.

However, I tried out Final Fantasy XI a little bit and it just didn't do it for me. Sure, it had pretty graphics, but it just wasn't as social, it wasn't as open-ended, it wasn't as creative - I think MMOs are still catching up to MUDs in social and gameplay aspects. They have graphics, but they're way behind in other stuff. As a result, they don't suck people in as much (at least, not me).

I've heard EQ is pretty addicting, though, maybe your mileage will vary based on the actual game.

Final Fantasy XI isn't a very good transition for a MUDer to MMORPGs. The fact that japanese and americans share servers make it very hard to commuicate. When I played it (granted only for a month) I found it was just generally less social...

Now, if you had played Everquest when it was released, your impression would have probably changed. It was very (and still is, but not really for new players) social. I say it's not very social for new players because Everquest has turned into a "race to the top get teh phat lewtz".

I played FFXI at E3 in 2003, where everyone was really social and had a great time. I played with one of my friends I had met down there while a third friend went to go talk to developers. 30 minutes later, the third guy came back and my friend and I hadn't moved at all. It was a battle to pull us away.

I suppose that once people start paying for the game, it's suddenly all about achievement and less about social interaction.

I played on Netherworld for years and years.. Lately, it has gone down, and in the meantime I've started to play Achea. I like it a lot, and find it "complete" in that there is so much to do.

I love MUDs, and it's the one game that I always come back to eventually.

They are so simple in a way, but also so fun and addicting. I love them.

I've been playing Gemstone III/IV for the past two years. Pretty solid game. I'm not really playing much for the moment, but I've had some amazing times in it over the past few years.

Simutrionics' Dragonrealms has given me a free month for October, I'm playing it until that's up. I used to play it pretty heavily. There's a fat, bold line between social players and power players there and since I was mostly social I didn't make it incredibly far along the level system. I like how they handle the healer system and playing an empath, though.

I'm giving EQ2 a go when it comes out. I'm not going to rush for the phat xp, but I'll be along the heavy-casual-but-still-has-an-occupation-and-social-life gain curve rather than in a world of maxxed-out characters.

I used to play muds before eq. I have played a few since, and some are ok, but just not what I like. I even used to run a mud on my amiga bbs years ago.

One thing that I will ALWAYS mean I like MUD's more than the graphical MMORPG's is the spelling. I cant stand the amount of idiots on the graphical games who "talk" in leet speak, aol speak or just have general bad grammar. Any decent MUD out there will stamp on anyone who finds it impossible to speak whole sentences without a dictionary fairly hard, and that is fine by me if it means I dont have to spend more than 2 seconds trying to work out what a word is.

I will admit to playing Carrion Fields, oh so long ago.
After that came Turning Point.
My last home was Dark Mists.

I believe all three are still up and running.

when i played muds (wow, do they ever suck your life away), it was mainly on Fate (and a few variations thereof), Rites of Passage, and Methods of Destruction a bit.

I also built for MoD and Altross, as well as have my own mud code on my server I tinker with from time to time.

I play on Dark and Shattered Lands from time to time, but Aardwolf is the best non-RP MUD I've ever played. There's always some new ability/spell to try, since the leveling is almost unlimited.
