Any thought to an Analog gaming thread?
Justa thought, but I would love to find a good general fourm about analog gaming. I own a gameshop, and it's hard to find "non-gamers" into chatting on the subject. Would be very interesting to see if any of you still sit around the dinner table playing board games with your family?
Anywho...thanks! |
I don't really play board games much, but I do know that there are some really really good ones out there, such as Settlers of Catan and Puerto Rico. It can be tough to find board games that rely more on skill than chance.
Playing computer games online will never be as fun as playing a good board game with your close friends when everyone is into it. |
I have a closet full of games. I love playing board games but we also spend alot of time playing cards and computer games. I guess i spend more time on the computer but i cant say its better than a good board game or day playing cards.

[QUOTE] Only when we're on vacation. |
Not too regularly but occasional playing of
* chess * monopoly (i own the stars wars edition, with little die cast metal figures) * trivial pursuit * cards - euchre especially (this is really common at my family gatherings) I think my favourite other board games are pictionary and balderdash, especially in large groups. |
I play Board games with my friends. It's all a bunch of nerdy stuff, LotRs, Star Wars stuff. Like trivial Pursuit, or monopoly. Monopoly is fun cus it causes arguments.
|
It's really good to see people are still playing :) My post came from my trip home last night, when a girl saw my work shirt, and asked if I owned a video game store. When I told her that I didn't sell video games, she looked totally confused and said, "You mean there are other kinds of games you can buy?"
Sigh. (And no, she wasn't kidding.) Thanks for the responses. |
I'll play Diplomacy whenever I get a chance!
I also just heard something about a "Settlers of Catan" video game? |
Not with the fam. But my friends and I engage in a few rounds of Talisman every so often. I want to start playing chess again, and I have two really good strategy games just collecting dust on my shelf. One is called Abalone, and its played on a board that looks similar to a chinese checkers board. You play by pushing a series of marbles around trying to knock the other player's marbles out. The other game is Go. I'm hesitant to set up my board for a protracted game because of my cats.

Board games and card games always occur whenever the family gathers. :) Depending on the part of the family, Pinnochle is almost always played.
however, with friends the games, although still analog, get a little strange (e.g: The Great Brain Robbery, Fluxx, Lunch Money, etc)... I just love Cheap-ass games :) generally I would prefer playing an analog game with friends than a video game. Just seems more personal. |
Lunch money is awesome!
|
Irishsean,
Settlers just launched on MSN. I haven't really look at it, but there is quite a buzz about it. Any of you try any fo the Days of Wonder games? Ticket to ride and Pirates COve are some personal favs... |
Board games are great for vacations and large group get-togethers as it's easier to get a big game out rather than find enough computers for 8 people to use. Settlers of Cataan is a lot of fun (and really easy to learn).
One game I've gotta reccomend for racing fans is Formula De. It's a great racting board game and you can buy real tracks to race on (my hometown track, Portland International Raceway is one of them). Anyway, yeah. Boardgaming = fun... and that's all I've got to say about that. Oh, and Penndude, Pirates Cove is awesome. Damned Pirates are always killing me! |
Illuminaire, remove the Undead Pirate from Pirates Cove. I am pretty sure he breaks the game. We never play with him, and the game seems much more balanced.
|
My friends have a regular game night once every couple of weeks and we play a regular assortment of analog games:
Apples to Apples Chez Geek Illuminati (Non-CCG version) Nuclear War Poker Carcassone Still one of the best ways to hang out with friends, IMHO. |
My wifes family is really into family game nights and we still get together with them quite often to play games...
Monopoly Life Trivial Pursuit You Don't Know Jack Parcheese (SP) Sorry Risk - Lord of the Rings Edition (My Favorite) Bargain Shopper Just to name a few.... Me and the Wife also have a 10 year Gin Tournament on going that we started while dating.... she's kicking my ass though  And now that my son turned 2 I am trying to get his attention span to allow for some games... He likes his Little People Memory game and his flash cards DB |
I'm a big fan of Formula De. It's surprisingly fun to roll dice to move your sweet little plastic car around the track...
The other big one among my friends is Risk 2210. Frickin' Awesome modification to the Risk system. You get commanders, can go into the ocean and up to the moon! Oh, and there are cards that let you nuke the world! WOO HOO! d: ) |
Risk - Lord of the Rings Edition... grumble...
My friends and I played that once. I held a bunch of forces in reserve until the ring bearer was about to leave the board, committed everything to an attack...and the ring bearer stayed on the board due to extenuating circumstances. So my friend ripostes on me and commits all his forces to an attack...and the ring bearer doesn't leave AGAIN! And so that last player in our trio, just rips us both a new one...and the ring bearer leaves...sigh. |
I play in a weekly tabletop RPG and/or hex-map wargaming group. Our games last much, much longer than my single player computer forays do.
As for family, we play cards from time to time at our gatherings. My brother will play some Axis and Allies with a few other friends, but it's hard to get mom and pop around the table for a nice 5-hour, 4-way, 150-ton lance Battletech game. |
Xenomorph...ah Classic BT, sniff sniff, brings back the memories :)
|
Heh. At least once a month, Penndude. Can't go without it.
|
Man, you go Xeno! I own pretty much every product ever printed for the game, but don't get to play too much...like ever.
Hell, I own a gamestore, I should be able to find someone to play :) |
Try luring people in with a Battletech RPG game and then when it comes time for the lance to throw down...bam, there's this whole map with figurines and dice for us to play out our battle in!
It's how my friends got me into it when I was standard AD&D and Magic: the Gathering player X that you probably see legions of. |

Once in awhile whenever I visit my older brother, we'll play a game of Hero Quest. Other than that, I have Chess, Monopoly, and some Simpsons board game that never get to see the light of day. |
does poker count? apart from that chess is the best two player game, better than anything digital (including cooperative play Halo, but it's close)
|
I certainly don't have a 3000 point army of Iron Warriors lying around...
There was a point a while back when Games Workshop owned my soul. These days I play a game or two of Settlers of Catan with the family now and then- it's good fun and we have enjoyed playing around with the deployment and set up rules to balance or vary the game. At uni I have taken to having a pack of cards permenantly in my pocket, I play 500 whenever I can round up at least 2 other people who know how to play. |
We used to play cards alot when we went on holiday together, but i've kinda grown out of family holidays. When i was younger i used to like board games, but noone would ever play with me, so that kinda died away too. I still have a cupboard of random games in the other room.
I would like to play some Poker, but at the moment, i have noone to play it with! |
I just looked through a copy of "War of the Ring" by Fantasy Flight Games, and it is GORGIOUS. It retails at $60, but weighs 5 or 6 lbs. It is chock full of plastic figures, nice dice, and two huge map boards. Have a look at it if you geta chance.

Being part of FngKestrel's group of friends, I feel I must add to the games he forgot to mention:
1) any version of Axis and Allies I can get anybody to play with me 2) any version of Risk we can find the time to play 3) trying to learn Texas Hold 'Em without losing the rest of my money 4) City of Chaos is awesome. Have never finished a game, however. 5) yes, Cheapass Games are pretty sweet. 6) recently played a game of Life while at my sister's house with her family. 7) Settlers of Cataan is great Ok, too many already listed, too many more to be listed. |
Coppertop, have you tried any of the master class versions of Risk, IE 2210 or Godstorm? They are fantasic....
There is an EXCELLENT book on Low Limit Hold'em I have: Winning Low-Limit Hold'em (2nd Edition) by Lee Jones It's quite good. |

Heh heh,

|
