WoW vs. FF11?

I've played MMORPGs before. Started off with UO, it was fun, but eventually stopped playing. The whole system seemed kinda limited with the whole "you can only max 7 skills" BS.

Never touched EQ, played a bit of Anarchy Online (the trial), but never got into it.

FF11 came out, damn was I addicted... 6 months straight. I just got back into it after a small break, but I've been reading a lot of stuff about WoW.

For those who have played both, how is WoW compared to FF11? I'm talking battles, characters, jobs, etc..

I think the big minus (for me) about FF11 is the lack of solo play. Yeah, an MMORPG is meant to be played with others, but sometimes you only have an hour to play and you don't wanna do crap like "crafting" - you wanna level!

This is Blizzard, so I know the game's gonna be one of the best (hopefully, anyway..)

I'm looking forward to the solo-play aspect, really was a turnoff for ffxi to have the huge level grind combined with forced grouping and only certain jobs that could group well...

WoW is fucking incredible. It's extremely enjoyable. I've played the stress test, played on my friend's closed beta account, and am looking forward to open. The graphical feel of that game is very much in line with WC3 and whatnot. It's got the exact look of WC3. Battling in WoW is pretty decent, much better than EQ, can't comment on how it stacks up against FFXI. The best, best part about fighting in WoW is that when you die, you have the choice to either 1) resurrect right at a graveyard at the cost of less than 1% of your XP for that level or 2) run back to your body and take no hit in XP whatsoever. If that's not good news, I can't tell you what is. Professions are limited. You can only have 2, which creates a situation in which people specialize in things and get really, really good at them.

Almost all the XP you can get in WoW comes solely from questing. You can grind all you want, but there's no xp like quest XP. I mean, in the time it takes you to kill enough monsters to get, say 1000 xp, you can probably finish a quest in about half or a quarter of that time. Most times, the quests are pretty simple. Kill this many of this thing, collect this many of this thing. But it's still, for me at least, 10x more fun and 10x less frustrating than EQ ever was.

One thing that you'll probably enjoy is that WoW is a game easily capable of playing solo. In EQ, a level 50 player trying to kill a level 50 monster is a joke. It takes an entire group. In WoW, a level 50 player can kill a level 50 monster by themselves with ease. Oh, and you can regenerate your HP and mana with food and drink after each battle.

WoW is a solo or a group game depending on how you wanna play it. I love going solo as well, especially since my class is seriously good at soloing (Priest).

It's probably gonna start out on at least the lower spectrum of the MMO scale, I'd say around $10-12/month. I can forsee that eventually, as it surpasses EQ and the like in popularity, it might go above $15, but that's a ways away.

So no one's played FF11 *and* WoW?

You can heal in FF11 after each battle just by kneeling.

How does group play work if a level 50 char can beat a level 50 enemy? Is the focus more on solo play then as opposed to group play?

If the focus is more on solo play, as it seems people are indicating, then perhaps this is the MMO for me. I certainly don't mind having SOME group play, but FFXI is just INSANE! I loved the lower levels, but once I got to level 15 or so, you HAD to group. I will not play an MMO that forces me to group.

Also, hopefully the crafting professions will be more like Star Wars Galaxies. If there was another MMO I would play, it would be SWG. In SWG you can create a crafting character that requires no grouping and still be very successful.

There are regular monsters in the game and "elite" monsters in the game. Elite monsters are EQ-type monsters that take an entire group to safely kill. Most classes can kill an elite monster of their level by themselves but end up almost dead. The elite monsters are usually in dungeons and very important quests. You do *not* have to fight elite monsters to level up.

Regular monsters are the monsters that a player can kill with ease. Most classes can kill two monsters at the same time if they're the same level as the player.

The topic of soloing is discussed often in FFXI forums (usually the topic is, "we should be able to do solo more easily," or "why does every party need a WHM"). The fact remains that FFXI is a group-oriented game. If that's not your thing, you probably won't like it as much as one where you can solo.

That said, I'm definitely not going with WoW simply because the biggest problem I have with MMO's (and a good deal of the online community in general, for that matter) is the 13 - 18 crowd. Sorry to all you mature 13-18 year olds, you are in the minority. Granted, they show up in all MMO's, it seems that, at least in FFXI, you can generally avoid them.

WoW seems much more like the "Diablo II of MMO's" which is really a turn-off for me as far as interest is concerned.

Of course, this entire opinion is coming from someone who's been playing FFXI for about 8 months and is pretty addicted (I came from playing Asheron's Call to FFXI).

Anyway, there's my $0.02

There have been several awfully implemented massive changes to WoW lately, so I wouldn't give Blizzard too much credit yet. They still have plenty of time to utterly ruin the progress they've made in the last years.

I played both World of Warcraft and Final Fantasy XI -- though only each for a short time.

I played Final Fantasy XI for about a month once it was released in the US (computer version). There were many things that bothered me with Final Fantasy XI. Namely how god damn incompetent my groups were. Warriors who didn't understand what provoke was, black mages who couldn't control aggro...the list goes on. Aside from that, I found the world extremely stale and boring after about 10 levels. They reused the same damn models over and over for monsters. My friend who was in his thirties was still fighting goblin models we have seen since level one. Anyways, I got a job and my friends surpassed me in levels so I quit.

I played World of Warcraft only for about a week total (although I spent at least 30 hours on it). I really enjoyed WoW. The world was rich with detail, the graphics are awesome (if you enjoy the style), the game is overall fun to play. I actually enjoy the crafting system in WoW. My largest complaint would have to be that the game is, well, just very easy. A veteran MMORPG player will probably be able to tell that WoW is built to cradle players who have never played MMORPGS into the genre. I find the overall level speed too fast (if you know what you're doing you can get to level 10 in about 2-3 hours). It's far too easy too solo; some classes actually lose a lot of potential experience if they solo. Unfortunately, just like Final Fantasy XI, there are a number of incompetent players and I only see that number rising when it is released. However, those complaints (and a few more general MMORPG philosophies) aside, the game is damn good. I am really just worried about the leveling pace...hardcore players will possibly find themselves bored after a few months probably,

They have made some bad changes, but from playing the closed beta, one thing I've learned is that Blizzard listens to the players. If a new feature is implemented and the players hate it, next patch it's usually gone.

Which changes are you talking about?

For all the issues about patching and changes that people bring up about the game, I still can't deny that this is an incredibly fun MMO. The statement about players taking on environment at equal level with ease is completely true. Hell, for me, I can take stuff that's 2-3 levels above me with only resting for about 30 seconds. Gotta love the paladin.

>< I just talked about this in another thread, not knowing it had one all to itself oops. I like ffxi alot, am quite frustrated with it but not ready to give it up. I like the ability to successfully solo in WoW, and it looks like an great game overall (from what i've seen of it). I am going to try to play the open beta before I make a decision wether or not to ditch ffxi for WoW.

Is it just me, or did FF11 feel like a FF-themed Anarchy Online?

WoW is a lot more user friendly than FFXI.
And it doesn't suck.

I just realized that this thread is sooo old. Ignore me.
