remember archon?!!!!
used to play that for the whole 3 hrs i was stuck at after school in the 7th grade (the late '80s)... that and the 2nd one. i was reading a review of fable and saw that its' maker made archon. i wonder if there's any games you all know of that are similar to it that have come out since. i have one from ps1 that i forget the name of, but it was the same creator.
as a side note, i wondered if there was a freeware download link of it and archon II anywhere since its so old.

I had a copy of it for pc in the early 90's. Never saw a port of Archon II. You might check the underdogs, they should have a version of it. Here is a link.

archon was a kind of board game where you jockeyed for position with your pieces but taking a piece isn't automatic as it is in chess.... when you try to take a piece you go to battle w/ them and only the victor survived. some pieces were definitely a lot more powerful than others, but there could always be upsets... the 1st was a checkerboard battle of black and white and the 2nd one went to a 4 color battle of the elements of earth, wind, fire, and water and the sides were divided into "order vs. chaos" instead of dark vs. light.
