How long before Halo 2 sells 1 million copies?
This is an unscientific poll to spoof the "Sims 2 sells 1 million copies in ten days" thread. But I'm curious what people REALLY think. Working in game retail, I have a reasonable idea, but...

Halo 2 has probably already sold 1 million copies simply based on reserved games. I imagine that Halo 2 will sell 1 million copies as fast as manufacturers can get them to the retailers.

Well, the retailers will have then, it's more a matter of how quickly they pick them up. I know Game Stop probably has 100K on pre-order AT LEAST nationwide. The Manhattan store alone has 1400+. My store has ~500. I'm saying aside from pre-orders... how long before actually physical copies sold hit 1M?

well I'm not sure if I really understand your question, but if you're saying from the minute they get into people's hands, I'll give it 1 week. Sure, there are a lot of pre-orders, but there is always that dip right when it comes out, and then it picks up again after a few days. So I say for that whole cycle to be complete, 1 week.

I recall a figure from about 5 months ago that Halo 2 had already hit the 500,000 mark on pre-orders, so it is probably real close to a million.

Agreed. I gave it the one hour mark, just to be realistic

One day. I know several people ( professionals, mind you) that will be coming down with a screeching case of Halo2-itis on 9/9/04! I'm already off, and will be attending the midnite release. I'll be online about 1:30 at the latest! C ya there!

I hope this game is spectacular. It's really gonna suck if it's an 8 out of 10. Or worse yet...the dreaded 8.5 out of 10!!!!
If this game gives enough quality that it deserves a 9.5 out of 10 then I won't be disappointed. Anything less and I'll be pissed. -Lasereth

I picked the more realistic (in my opinion) 1 week. It took The Sims 2 a week to break that barrier, and The Sims is the best-selling game of all time.
However, what we Halo fans have over the Sims fans is a ferocity when it comes to our game(s). Most of us know when the release date is and will be in stores that day or have already pre-ordered ours. So basically what I'm trying to say is "Gee, I don't really know". What a meaningful post, huh? *Just a note, I'll be there with the rest of you on the first day trying to pickup my pre-order. Edit: I'm not positive on the "best selling..." moniker given to The Sims, but I know I've read it somewhere, so don't quote me on that.

You should still be able to pre-order either Halo 2 or Halo 2 Collector's Edition. Check your local stores to make sure.

What happened was this: When they started taking the preorders however many months ago, they put EVERYONE down for the "special edition" without asking them (accidently). So they have a bunch of $5 down payments on a special edition that no one knows they have. Most of the people think they are getting the regular version. But they aren't. So when then 58 dollar total comes up and they want the regular version instead of the special edition, they can choose to get the regular (at least that's what I've been told). If enough people get the regular edition, and there are a bunch of special editions of Halo 2 left on launch day, then I will get one. If not, then I'll have to wait a week. Suck. Thanks Gamestop!

Redjake.. I got the same story at Gamestop. So, being the resourceful guy I am I called my buddies at MS to see if I can get a copy from them. When the laughter died down, I got a resounding NO. Not sure how many copies MS is planning to press initially, but basically everyone at Bungie figures it will not be near enough for demand. So, if you want a copy, do what the smart people have already done, pre-order..

Most Game Stop's still have regular edition for the first order (not a lot, but some). Surely worth getting. Also, in case nobody's noticed, 16Nov is a big release date, too:
Everquest II (PC) World of Warcraft (PC) Half-Life II (PC) Vampire Masquerade (PC) Need for Speed: Underground 2 (XBox, PS2, GC) Metroid Prime 2: Echoes (GC) Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door (GC) |

The deal with the reserves was alot of people reserved Halo 2 long before Microsoft announced there was going to be a special edition for 5 bucks more. So when they announced the special edition, rather then deal with 100k people having to change their pre-orders, they just changed the SKU on all pre-orders up until that point to be special editions and from then on customers could choose which they wanted to pre-order. If someone comes in with an early ticket to pick it up, and they don't want the special they can get the regular edition instead, provided the store has enough on hand.
As for first shipment thats totally dependent on the store, best just check the ones near you if you want it, each store will probably be getting its own e-mail telling them when to stop taking first shipment reserves. |

story is over a week old, and it says pre-orders are at 750,000. I'd say its pretty good chance that it >1,000,000 now or soon |
