My fuckin cunt Gamecube.
Yeah. I'm just gonna rant here.
Delete if you must. So, I've been borrowing Resdent Evil 0 from a friend. I've been playing it for a good week. Last night, I turn on my GC, everythings fine. I start playing for about 5 minutes, and the fucker says "The Game disc Cannot Be Read". I know for a fact that my friend's disc works fine on his GC. So I give up for the night (read: start playing XBOX). Today I go and buy "Star Wars Rouge Leader: Rouge Squadron II". I pop it in, start playing for a good half hour. At the time, I forgot that RE: 0 fucked up. The same message appears just as I am about to shoot the photon thingies into the death star. How fucking pissed was I? I was pissed like whoa. So I start experimenting. I restart, try playing, it has the message. I unplug everything, try playing, shows the message. I put in another disc... It works for a little bit, but it shows the message. I put in EVERY other game I have, and it shows the message. So now I know it's not the games. Fuck. Now I have to either return my GC, send it back to nintendo, or... What other options do I have?

Trade it in at EB? Or if you don't want that, there are some people on ebay that buy broken gaming systems.

Can I really just trade it in?
Oh, maybe I should've said this: It's a modified system. I had my local import games store put in a chip so I can play japanese games on it. The function is controlled by a switch. Will they still take it? Or should I maybe bring it to the import game store?

Nintendo and the store you bought it from will not take any modified systems in for servicing as modifying it voids the warranty. I'm sure there are some private companies who will do what they can to fix it. Try your local non-corp game store and ask if they do system repairs.

My Gamecube has been doing something similar a couple months ago when I started play Harvest Moon. When I tried to boot up, it just would act like there was no disc inside. It would go to the Gamecube Setup screen like nothing was in there. I tried cleaning the disc, using other discs, and smacking the Gamecube. I figured if I just pressed the reset button really fast after it powered up, then eventually it would work. Probably not good for the Gamecube, but I really don't care.
Now I don't even play the Gamecube because of Madden and Fable. |

Well, the GC will still recognize the disc... But after a while.
So I'm thinking of getting a laser cleaning disc. Has anybody had any luck with them?

You really only need a laser cleaning disc if you can't reach the laser eye. Such as the case with a PS2 or Xbox. For a GC, just give the laser eye a very soft wipe with a soft cotton cloth. I don't think it will help though. The only thing I can think of as to why it would work for a little while and stop is that, when the Mod chip was installed the wires to the laser eye were loosend. So when the disc starts spinning it creates enough movement amongst the wires to temporarily disconnect the eye causing the system to basically crash. But without being able to look at the system all I can offer is a guess. well, good Luck on finding a solution.

THANKS A BUNCH Kodega!
I'm gonna try the soft wipe thing. Should I put anything on the cotton, or just have it dry? Would a cotton ball work?

I would suggest using a very small amount of rubbing alcohol or nothing at all, don't wipe it with water or anything impure, cause the impurities will fog the lense when the water or solution evaporates, so either use a VERY small amount of alcohol or nothing at all. A cotton ball would probably work but you need to be very careful that you don't leave little cotton threads in there, I would suggest a qtip used very lightly.
By the way, do you carry your GC around to places or do you leave it in one place? If your carrying it around it can misallign the laser, even if your being extremely careful.

Hmm... Yeah, I forgot about Q-Tips.
I also cleaned the disc very thuroughly. The good ole 1997 Wired Magazine Windex cotton shirt trick. Works every time.

When did u get ur GC if it is from post 2003(i think) it mite have a laser problem. MY game cube had a problem like that. It worked fine for a while, and then all of the sudden. u go to play a game and the Menu at the begining pops up and says the game disc is not it. So i took it down to sum shop about 3 hours away from where i live. TOld them what was going down. They said that im lucky cuz i had 1 day left on the 90 day warrenty. gave me a brand new one. It was a flaw with the GC nintendo had overlooked. All the new systems are fine now.
maybe that helped, prolly not though |
