What RPG’s genre do you like most?

I always wondered why most of the RPG’s out there are Fantasy, do most people actually like this genre or are the game companies simply pushing the titles on us because they are the easiest to do? So vote for the RPG genre you like the most. Allow me to explain the options,

SCI-FI – It’s the future baby, where everyone has a laser pistol and a hover car. Everything that mankind has dreamed off it got.

Dystopian – We really let ourselves go this time. Sums, dirt, narcotics and nasty mutated whores are the good life. Improvements have been made but only to the worst aspects of humanity.

Post-apocalyptic – We had it and then we blew it all up! Where there is very little of anything but the goodies you dig up are sure to impress the masses. Explore the ruins of bombed out citifies to obtain that spiffy plasma gun so you can send the club wielding mutants screaming.

High Fantasy – The Humans, Elves, Dwarves and Goblins are at it again - a perfected recipe by now. Put on a suit of shiny armor and pick up a big ass axe then go cleave some dragons to impress the ladies who all just happen to be perfect 10’s and aren’t shy to show it off.

Hybrid Fantasy – Same as above but this time we got robots, laser guns, spaceships, trains and automobiles all mixed in with a medieval setting and everyone wears cool outfits.

Present Day – It’s now, accept that would be boring. So add some fantasy flavor and set vampires upon on L.A. or some Sci-Fi action and get an evil corporation to create a horde of zombies/monsters to devour New York.

If you can think of something different vote for the one that’s closest to what you like and then give us something more specific.

My favorite has always been the dystopian setting. It allows for allot of realistic conflict scenarios. It gives the game designers a chance to place neat futuristic concepts into the game without having everything look like Apple designed it. Finally it gives allot of room for creativity while still holding onto the boundaries of possibility. I wish more games were made in this genre.

Nothing can simply beat the post-apocalyptic times of RPGs. aka Fallout.

2nd to that is Neverwinter nights or Morrowind settings.

I love High Fantasy games and I love those type of books as well. Bring on the swords, axes, dragons, and knights!

Where does the Final Fantasy franchise fall in this?? It seems to have everything. My favorite of all time is FFVII. Sephiroth is one bad ass mofo.

Pellaz 09-07-2004 12:11 PM

I like them all, I just wish that 90% of the greats were something other than high fantasy. I'd LOVE to see a great sci-fi, non franchise RPG, so I'll vote for that. I can't think of a single great Dystopian RPG, although the 'real' world of The Longest Journey was so wonderful I would probably eat this up too.

Wait, I take back my original comment. As a general rule, I HATE hybird fantasy in any medium, although there are rare instances where it works.

7 would be hybrid fantasy.

Robots/guns/swords and mythical creatures.

Any of the fantasy settings works for me.

It's really old, but Shadowrun for SNES was a great RPG in this genre. Neocron was a pretty decent MMORPG in this genre. Those are about the only one's I can think off. Midgar city in Final Fantasy 7 was pretty dystopian but the game was overall a Hybrid Fantasy.

i voted High Fantasy.
but i'd love to see a good dystopian rpg... might look up this shadowrun.

bltzkriegmcanon 09-07-2004 03:55 PM

I can't really decide, so I picked out the most recent one I played on console. Knights of the Old Republic. Yeah, it's more sci-fi than anything, but I kinda like the... oh hell, who am I kidding, I didn't really think about what I was voting for.

Dane Bramage 09-07-2004 04:22 PM

High-Fantasy... of course ;)

I have played D&D since '82 (cripes... that's 22 years!) and have played NWN since it first hit the shelves. I have tried other pen and paper RPGs but none of them have the same connection that a high-fantasy game does. Perhaps it's because that was the first RPG I played... perhaps it's because fantasy is a mixture of mytholocial history and romantic fantasy that most everybody can related to. But it is obvious (by game sales and your own poll) that high-fantasy is the preferred genera.

I think Kate Blanchett said it best when she said I get to have pointy ears! (paraphrasing whatever she actually said)

thriolith 09-07-2004 09:22 PM

My favourite's gotta be High Fantasy, but all of the others are equally good. I don't generally care too much about the genre, it's more of the gameplay and story than anything else.

Kepage23 09-07-2004 09:36 PM

I love all the Final Fantasy games. I just have always been interested by swords and magic. I like the High Fantasy (Can't wait for the new Kingdom Hearts), but the Hybrid Fantasy opens up so many new options.

Kalnaur 09-08-2004 03:18 AM

I voted Hybrid Fantasy, but High Fantasy gets a close second for me.

Mainly I like the idea of my wizard being able to weild a gun or a knight with bionic implants or some such shite.

Jonsgirl 09-08-2004 12:22 PM

I think it's a toss up between High and Hybrid. I picked High, just cause there are more titles that I've played in that genre.

Would that be Sci-Fi (in the future, lasers, hover jets) or High Fantasy (aliens and all)?

thales 09-08-2004 01:02 PM

It depends

If we're only talking single-player RPGs, then it doesn't matter to me what the genre is.

If we're talking MMORPGs, then I'll have to put in my vote for high fantasy. I came to this conclusion recently while playing City of Heroes. I found that I got increasingly bored fighting the same creatures in my ever-present quest for experience. I determined the reason I was so bored was the fact that City of Heroes, unlike the high fantasy games, had no extra stuff that justified side-quests.

For example, in Asheron's Call, there were many times when I found myself conducting exahustive searches for particular creatures in order to hope they dropped a certain pelt or shard or whatever, so I could in turn transform those into some nifty piece of armor or weapon. City of Heroes provided me with no such side quests. Just a never-ending quest for experience. Boooooring.

bigbad 09-08-2004 11:56 PM

High fantasy all the way, was a Dark Age of Camelot player for a long time and really enjoyed it, and Neverwinter is one of my favorite games ever.

Cappy 09-09-2004 12:06 AM

Exploration

I had to go with high fantasy. The single most engaging element for me in an RPG is exploration - I want to go find/do/see things that have not been seen before, and collect stuff that is sorta like treasure-hunting.

High fantasy most often is able to support this element of a game.

What the fuck? Halo is a first person shooter, not an RPG.

I like High Fantasy.

crossova 09-09-2004 08:39 AM

Slayer 09-09-2004 09:32 AM

Final Fantasy series and Tale of Syphonia a great set of rpgs

SiNai 09-09-2004 01:56 PM

I like em all!! I can think of good Sci-Fi, High and Hybrid fantasies.. ehh.. My vote will go to High Fantasy, by a slim margin..

Mantus 09-09-2004 02:08 PM

Wow, I am so amazed at how many people like Fantasy. Thanks for the replies people keep em comming.

portwineboy 09-09-2004 03:23 PM

Post-apocalyptic. I loved the gameplay environment of the Fallout games. I used to play a pen and paper game back in the 80's called Gamma World that was pretty sweet.

If I could find a great MMORPG in post-apoc or sci fi environ I'd probably sign up. I've tried SWG, Neocron and AO:SL and found them all lacking in one way or another. Something with the quality of WoW but set in space or after the fall. That would be cool.

/edit to say I found a cool link for post-apocalyptic stuff (games, movies, books) and dystopic

hybrid fantasy, mainly of the linear japanese style, to add another level of catagoration, i prefer this to the more freeform worlds that some games take

Jadedfox 09-10-2004 02:48 AM

High Fantasy, but I have a soft spot for Post-Apocalyptic (Fallout series) as well.

Generally, I think most RPG's are in the Fantasy realm because of magic. Without magic (or some variation like mutant powers, The Force, etc.), you have a smaller range of variety amongst player types. Most players would rather have a party comprised of a soldier/knight type, a magician/wizard, a healer and an archer (for example), than one that's just a mixture of long-ranged vs. melee ranged weapons specialists.

Shadowrun brings back good memories from High School

Baldrick 09-10-2004 02:56 PM

I'm an old school D&D player, so of course I HAVE to go with High Fantasy. :)

I haven't played in about fifteen years, but lately I've been thinking about finding a group that plays one day a week that I could get into. Great, geeky memories... :D

zynyxx 09-10-2004 03:01 PM

I really like the Neverwinter Night, Diablo, and Baldur's Gate series. So that is what I voted for, but I have been playing Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic lately and really have enjoyed that one too.
