Half-Life 2 going gold MONDAY!

Source!

"We're going gold monday..."
Posted by Gabe Newell, Aug 28 2004, 12:10 AM.

Oh sweet Jeebus, if this is true, and all goes according to plan...

edit: I see someone mentioned this in the pre-load thread, so a mod can delete this if they feel it necessay, but I'm of the mind that news of this magnitude deserves its own thread )

edit 2: The site seems to be down or really slow due to everyone on the intarweb looking at the post, so alot of sites have gotten screenshots of the post, I.e.: HalfLife2.net

edit 3: !!! People are investigating the authenticity of the post, and someone has posted this on the steam forums:

From : Gabe Newell <gaben@valvesoftware.com>
Sent : Saturday, August 28, 2004 9:22 AM
To : "ctarkin" <ctarkin@digiverse.net>
Subject : GOLD?

No, it's 100% fake.

-----Original Message-----
Hello Gabe, I've just read the thread in hl2fallout about HL2 going gold on monday.
As a hardcore fan I must ask: IS THIS REAL?

Thanks for the kickass game

Maybe it's some mix-up I'm not 100% sure yet. The IP is based in seattle, but maybe it's a clever fake. If this is not gabe's post it means he has, once again, had an account hacked.

Its most likely a fake

So I'll stop all this editin' and updatin' and goto sleep (and pray that it turns out to be true).

If that is true and the fact that the source was on a open connected machine leads me to belive that Gabe isn't as smart as we may belive.

From HalfLife2.net:

"Going gold..." Confirmed as a fake
by Icarus @ 9:33am Saturday 28th August, 2004
This morning it was confirmed that the post made concerning Half-Life 2 going gold, orginally thought to be made by Valve's Gabe Newell, was in fact posted by someone that had found his password and used it to post with his account.

A Valve employee confirmed it in this thread on the SteamPowered forums.

See.... I shit you not.....

EBGames has pushed back their HL2 release date to Nov. 1st. They can't confirm this date but have posted it as anticipated at that time. Which means it won't see the light of day till December.
The big question in my mind is: How does Valve survive with relatively no income (since they haven't had a hit after HL)?

Counter-Strike and Counter-Strike Conition Zero still sold very well. Not to mention Day of Defeat. Steam cafe subscriptions brought in some income and with the millions of copies Half-Life sold, they've had more than enough money to survive on.

Maybe he was just trying to be sneaky... thinking that no one would suspect the most obvious password. Then again maybe he's just bad with computers. He was partly responsible for MS Bob after all.

Ok this is what I have heard from a source of mine about HL2 and it's release date...i'm not sure if this is 100% accurate so don't hold me to it...

The biggest problem with it's release is due to some legal battles between sierra and valve.....something about if it doesn't get finished in a certain time sierra has the right to let another company finish it. Right now the game is buggy as shit and crashes alot. So valve is gonna push for getting done for christmas time...but i guess during it's initial release date there will be a patch already for it (and many more to follow) and the game will ship without the multiplayer option.

I highly doubt this, Valve is really one of the only good developers Sierra has. It would be like Vivendi threatening Blizzard. Not gonna happen...

Yes - Sierra is gone. They are maybe 15 minutes from where I live. Too bad. Cool place, I hear. (well, it was....)

As for Valve...they are creating their own "cry wolf" story after which they will likely only sell 147 copies of HL2.

I have no doubt that once HL2 has actually gone gold, there will be more bru-ha-ha than you could possibly be imagined put out by valve... They do after all need to start putting away income for the sequel which will undoubtedly take another five some odd years and be plagued by code thefts, lies and other melodramas.

Well my reliable source tells me that they're aiming for a going gold date of Sept. 15th.

How can that rurmor be true if they're preloading it via Steam? And shipping without multiplayer would be suicide.

The game will be finished before HL2 but it won't come out before it due to contractual obligations.
