So... I've never heard this laid out straight, and at best seen vague references to "Japanese versions." So what's the deal? How many Final Fantasy games ARE there? How many are there in ENGLISH? I've heard rumors that Chrono Trigger was somehow related to Final Fantasy... is there any truth to that? Why is Crystal Chronicles not in the numbering system? Is it a totally different kind of game? If that's the case, why is FFXI numbered? Why isn't that called Final Fantasy Online?

Final fantasy IV was re-released with crono trigger, in a thing called final fantasy chronicles, so thats the link there.
Crystal Cronicles, along with final fantasy Tactics, are a offshoot type thing, and not a rpg in the same sense as the others.
They decided that the online one was storyish enough or something to be called XI so it is, theres probs a better reason out there heh.
Japan had all in order
Final fantasy I - was released in the US as final fantasy
Final Fantasy II - was never released to US,
Final fantasy III - was never released to US, last game in series on NES
Final fantasy IV - was released under the name of FF2, and in the cronicles pack w/ crono trig
Final fantasy V - was never released to US,
Final fantasy VI - was released in the US as Final Fantasy3 - last game in series on SNES
Final fantasy VII - was released in US as final fantasy7, first playstation one.
Final fantasy VIII - US release
Final fantasy IX - US release. last Playstation1 game in series
Final fantasy X - US release, first on playstation2
Final fantasy X-2 - called 10-2, was a sequel to 10, Us release
Final fantasy XI - online, not sure why it got a series number but hey

the earlier games have been released in the anthology and orgins packs for playstation i think, so alll have been released everywhere now i think,

#2 was never before seen in the USA till this momment.

Of all the early FF games (1-3), I heard MANY say that 3 was the best.

what you've probably heard is references to Final Fantasy VI, which was released in the u.s. as FF3 on the snes. it really is a classic game in the series. i could be completely wrong, you're gonna hafta ask somone who has actually played the japanese version of FFIII

I'm thinking he actually meant FF3 for the NES. In my opinion, FF3 is the best FF for the NES. FF3 fixed the "ineffective" when trying to hit monsters already defeated, added classes/job to the game, added moogles, had graphics which were of a much high caliber than FF1/2 and in general was a much better game. FF3 was a bridge between the mediocre FF1 (and in my opinion FF2) and the outstanding FF4.

FF3(J), when compared to FF1(J) and FF2(J), is leaps and bounds better than the two mentioned. Although the difficulty rating is still pretty high it does have marked improvements over the two previous games. nanofever pretty much covered the biggest one (attacking a dead monster = miss).

FF3(J) had a pretty complex job system, at the time. It was easily taken advantage of too. Basically, if you gained job points through battle, and you spent them to change jobs. Opposite jobs, like Fighter and White Mage had a very high job point cost. But if you switched from Fighter, to Red Mage (or something that uses magic and has a decent fighting ability) THEN to white mage, you could actually spend less job points then switching from fighter to white mage directly.

Quick question here, was FF9 as good as FF7 or 8? I loved 7 and 8, but have never played 9. Is it worth picking up?

Oh yeah, it's an excellent game. It's just as good as FF8. I thought FF8 was a great game (most people just hated it because it wasn't as good as FF7), and FF9 is easily as good as 8 if not better. It's a lot like the earlier Final Fantasy's.

FF9 was good, but wasnt liked by a lot of people as the graphics where a bit more "kiddy" if you know what i mean. If you like the FF series tho, deffinatly pick it up, it'll kill more than a few hours

Yay! I'll have to get FF9 when I get FF Chronicles (for Chrono Trigger). Also, did you guys like FF X-2 as much as FFX? I just started playing FFX again today. I was having trouble beating Evrae. I tried like 4 or 5 times about a month ago. I picked up my controller today and smoked that ass on the first try! I didn't even have Cid blast him with the airship. I tried to pull back twice, but Evrae would swoop in with the Syphon Scythe (I think that's what it was called) attack. Now I'm in the Bevelle Cloiser of Trials. Anyway, just wanted to get some opinions on it before I buy.

FFX is good but FFX-2 is the worst FF game I ever played. I had played FF4-FFXI plus FFT. FFX-2 had good battle system and everything else is bad. It had an uninteresting story....music sucks.....voiceacting which I think is worst than FFX. Plus those random Charlie`s Angels style pose is annoying.

I enjoyed FFX-2 but it's a game that you'll either love or hate. I suggest renting it first or looking up a lot of info about it. It has a VERY light-hearted feel as opposed to most other FF games.

I haven't played FF X-2 myself, but by light-hearted, maybe he means it's like Kingdom Hearts? I was really disappointed with Kingdom Hearts given all the changes (I missed the turn-based fighting of old Final Fantasies, and it was a bit too "kiddy" for me as there wasn't much to be serious about). So maybe he means "kiddy."

FFX-2 isn't a bad game, but you'll definitely have to be OK with the Japanese influence on videogames to enjoy it. Your abilities and combat styles are based on what clothes the three main girl characters are wearing. The only characters in your party are Yuna, Rikku, and Paine. I'm not far in the game at all, but the game seems like a quality piece of software despite the lightheartedness. I still wish FFX-2 would have had all of the FFX characters in your party Spoiler: sans Tidus of course. I also miss the INCREDIBLE battle system that FFX had...the only one that rivalled it was Chrono Cross (which the FFX battle system was obviously crafted after). I'd rent it first...if you can play without minding the cutesy themes, then you'll love it. If you want a hardcore gritty Final Fantasy game, I'd wait for FFXII.

I am working on X-2 right now, I like it so far, I am not thrilled with the battle system but it is not bad. I don't like the singing and dancing so far it does remind me of kingdom hearts. Good story so far though. It is a very fast paced game if you leave the "active" system on.

I had no idea about the SaGa games (I always wondered what the Legend games were), and since when was Seiken Densetsu released as a Final Fantasy game?

Anyhow, I believe http://www.qualityroms.com has Seiken Densetsu 3, the translated version. I think this is where I got it from when I played it (I've since deleted it, so I can't be sure), and it worked correctly.

i thought the seiken densetsu games were the Secret of Mana games.....

technically, each of the final fantasies are in actuality the final ones for each of the characters in the games. Each one is on a different world with different characters(except for X-2) so each game is the 'final' one for those characters and that world.

I heard that the final fantasy game was going to be the last game that the designer was going to make, so it was his "final fantasy" so to speak, but it was v popular and more were made. Not sure the source on that one so take it with a pinch of salt but yea.

Final fantasy X-2 was a bit "girly" as a mate put it, and he didnt bother playing more than a few hours into it, it has a pop star style opening etc, but i enjoyed it, as others said its lighthearted but fun, and its good enough to be played gameplay/gfx etc.

I'm too lazy to look up Squaresoft's old name, but their games previous to Final Fantasy 1 failed pretty badly. Hironobu Sakaguchi (the father of the FF games) wanted to try one last game before Square went out of business. He decided to name their first take on RPG's "Final Fantasy" because he thought it'd be the company's "final" game. Final Fantasy hit off BIG time for Square, thus producing the incredible amount of sequels. Many people make fun of the series for its sequels because they're all named "Final" even though they don't know where the name came from!

I enjoyed x-2 it starts off kinda slow but I think, if you beat it with the proper ending ( i think there are 3) it gives a much better conclusion then the ending of ffx, which left me with the huh? feeling.

And why so much smack talk on Kingdom hearts? I admit that the first two hours or so were crap and playing thru it, I heard so much damn disney music I wanted to take a drill to my head, but it was a truly good game worthy of the square name. Cloud, Sephiroth, Squall and Cid in one game come on what else u need

The reason people complain about Kingdom Hearts is, IMO, that people were expecting a damn RPG that combined Disney and Square characters and what they got is a Zelda-knockoff adventure game that had multiple, switchable, playable characters. That being said, I still enjoyed the game. But I too, was expecting an RPG, and that's not what people got. Graphically, story-wise, on all fronts the game was pretty damn good, but that still doesn't change that it wasn't what people expected or wanted. That's why most people knock it.
